The American Council of the Blind's BITS organization has pointed members to a survey being conducted by Microsoft on Narrator and other screen readers. I find question 10 curious to say the least.
10. If Eloquence TTS were available in Narrator as an optional voice, which statement best reflects your willingness to pay for access? Required
Choices include:
I would be willing to pay because it significantly improves my productivity
I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount… (1/3)
I would consider paying only if the cost were very low
I would never be willing to pay for this
I’m not sure
Apple added Eloquence to their screen reader speech at no charge to the end user a couple of releases ago. One has to wonder why A company with the resources and profitability of Microsoft would even have a question like this? To be clear The survey says:
This survey does not imply any specific future product decisions. (2/3)
That may be true but why would you even ask a question implying that a cost for certain speech output is a possibility. I suppose one could argue that, even if something was never charged, understanding that people are willing to pay helps make a stronger case but this just seems like a misguided question to me.
You can find the full survey for completion at:

Maybe a General Strike Isn’t So Impossible Now
At first glance it sounds impossible — but a strategic look back at the coordinated strikes and militancy of the past two decades shows we might be much closer than we think.Gridwork
