I promise that when I reboot the Mozilla brand after their inevitable collapse, I will not make it "the modern AI (sic) browser."

My platform for when I reboot the Mozilla brand:

1. It supports www, as well as Gopher, ftp, and the good Gemini
2. Using udm14 instead of Google, which will no longer be the default
3. Fully funding MDN and Gecko via taxes on web sales and kickass branded swag
4. so-called "AI" will not be shipped

Vote for me to be the next Mozilla CEO!

"I supported MDN and all I got was this t-shirt and open web documentation"

Come on, we'd all be wearing the crap out of that shirt.

Has anyone started a GoFundMe to buy the shattered husk of Mozilla branding for the inevitable collapse?

Maybe we can make them an offer, lol

I have two candy wrappers and a couple of Cambodian Riels. If we can scare up a handful of bottlecaps then I suspect we'll have more than enough value to pay for what's left of Mozilla when it goes up for rescue.
in reply to Veronica Explains

I was looking for something witty to answer but I mean ... unironically ... ok sure not a gofundme but more like a foundation or something but um, this is tempting

(Yes, I know Mozilla does have a foundation, no, I have no idea how it works and how technically doable this is, but still)

in reply to Veronica Explains

Just go back to the Shepard Fairey dinosaur logo and you don't have to pay them anything. We bought that art outright and open sourced it.
in reply to Veronica Explains

Why do you think there is an inevitable collapse in Mozilla’s future?
in reply to Lonely

Because once it's no longer convenient, Google will pull their funding of Mozilla. Eventually, Mozilla will be unable to make payroll, mass layoffs will ensue, and eventually a bankruptcy and selloff of assets, including the Mozilla brand.

@lonelycannoli The Google money has been a blessing and a curse for Mozilla and Firefox. I'm sure a "third" browser is out there (besides Chrome and Firefox), but I'm not quite sure which horse to bet on.
in reply to Veronica Explains

I assume when Firefox isn’t a major player in the browser space is what you mean by isn’t convenient. Are you predicting that will happen fairly soon or that it is an inevitable event? I’m purely curious, because I’m an avid user of Firefox.
in reply to Veronica Explains

do not tempt me for I feel 2026 is the year of tackling another hilariously large project and now I wonder who owns the netscape trademark
in reply to Veronica Explains

looks like it's whoever owns AOL right now, and it's a now dead dialin service? sniffle
in reply to Veronica Explains

Let's say this: if you start the GoFundMe, I will 100% no takebacks fund it. If you're running it, at least, I trust you.
in reply to Veronica Explains

If money is spent, spend it on a fork of last year's firefox.

A real concerted organization-lead fork of Firefox is needed - stat.

@osceosso
There is (ironically) a moz-created project called @servo - a fresh browser engine written in #rust, along with a browser it's based on called #Verso - though it is not yet available. This seems to be our best hope for now.
in reply to Veronica Explains

isn't it already GPL? I had thought the whole Debian/Iceweasel debacle was about this and was settled about 10 years ago...
in reply to Veronica Explains

I got an MDN 20th Anniversary T-shirt and am literally wearing it right now!
in reply to Veronica Explains

That's a great idea; I would absolutely be on board for your whole plan.
in reply to Veronica Explains

is this a joke or are you serious? cause this sounds pretty good
in reply to Cyborus

@Cyborus it's only a joke as long as the brand is in their hands, as soon as they collapse I'm going to make a play!
in reply to Veronica Explains

can new Mozilla adopt the Gemini project and then sue Google for clobbering a brand name without a simple Google search for a name collision?
in reply to progo in NYC

@progo I'm reminded of the line about Michael Bolton from Office Space: "why should I change my name, he's the one who sucks?"
in reply to Veronica Explains

You've got my vote if even one of those things is accomplished. Ideally 4 if it has to be only one.

We need a gecko webview for android with proper security and privacy features. Chromium based webviews are dictating the rules on android ecosystem. AFAIK There is no other option but chromium based webview.

Speaking as a technologist, these claims are dogshit. They say, "We're putting AI in your browser." I say, FINISH THE PITCH. YOU'RE PUTTING AI IN MY BROWSER SO THAT...

GOT NOTHING? SO THAT WHAT‽ SAY SOMETHING TANGIBLE I CAN RELATE TO.

This isn't weird granola-munching retro-grouch opposition. These are the questions I was trained to ask as a product manager, and trained to say when speaking to the press.

You don't need to be an AI skeptic to recognize shitty leadership choices.

in reply to Veronica Explains

"*AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off.*"

If you're determined to shoehorn it in, how about making it something people can easily turn ON?

in reply to Veronica Explains

: I consider that anyone who has a MBA should not be trusted for anything, should not be approached and should seek immediate treatment.
in reply to Veronica Explains

the expressions "modern AI browser" and "understand what’s happening and to have real choices" clash IMO
