Got to take a tour through one of these at an airshow years ago. The size was just astounding...can you imagine what the AN-225 was like?

Oh yeah. We were inside one of the C-5C that has the upped deck removed (they have an 80 seat upped deck) for space cargo. Hard to describe how massive they are. The AN-225 would have been outstanding

I got to tour the Shuttle Carrier 747 at that same air show. The empty lower deck, with the crew rest area in the nose area, was pretty astounding too. Can only imagine having to ride that thing, at 200 knots max, and a low altitude, all the way from CA to Florida...

@c_dan4th I was going on memory there, from a description from one of the crew. Max may be a bit higher though: 0.6 mach at 15,000ft service ceiling is still pretty low and slow. And I can only imagine the turbulence at that altitude.

Cruise speed: 250 kn (290 mph, 460 km/h) / M0.6 with Shuttle Orbiter loaded
Range: 1,150 nmi (1,320 mi, 2,130 km) with Shuttle Orbiter loaded
Service ceiling: 15,000 ft (4,600 m) with Shuttle Orbiter loaded

@ildiavolorosso β€œIn the event of a bail-out, explosives would be detonated to make an opening in the fuselage at the bottom of the slide, allowing the crew to exit through the slide and parachute to the ground. The slide system was removed following the Approach and Landing Tests because of concerns over the possibility of escaping crew members being ingested into an engine.”

Yikes!

@c_dan4th Ha! Now we know why the B-52's downward ejection seats were also rocket-powered :)
