They won’t until we foolproof parenting so children don’t grow up to be emotionally needy.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

That's pretty much sums it up why I left a while ago (AI and this war thing wasn't even a thing then). Currently on #tidal which supposedly pays al music owners better and has none of that crap 🤷‍♂️
in reply to Miha Markič

@mihamarkic Still owned by shady billionaires though. There are really no good players in this area.
in reply to Ryananana

@Ryan Oh, absolutely, I'm aware. It's just shades of less bad. But still...
in reply to Miha Markič

@mihamarkic @Ryan
Yup, and it might not mean a ton but leaving and saying "this is because you did X" is a way of voting with your wallet.

We dropped our family account when we realised about the Andrew Tate stuff being hosted, had been wavering after Rogan stuff.

And as always, if you have the chance, fund artists directly too 😀

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

perhaps you could suggest alternatives that aren’t USA based? I agree with your statement tho
in reply to Mim54

@mim54 Qobuz is a French company that at least publishes the amounts it pays artists. Deezer is another French owned company, I don't believe they publish artist payout details though.

Bandcamp is American IIRC but it guarantees that the artists get most of the money, and if you buy music on Bandcamp Fridays they get even more.

I've also bought from 7Digital before, but they now seemed to be owned by an American company.

in reply to badambassador

@badambassador @mim54 Deezer is great and does publish some payout information: deezer.com/explore/en-us/artis…
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

I don't but unfortunately relying on YouTube music.

Am going to be ripping my CDs and using something like navidrome I think.

Can you recommend good places to get new music?

I know of bandcamp and not sure of SoundCloud. (I have a sneaky suspicion that SoundCloud may be shady)

Help appreciated. 💚

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

The sad thing is, many people couldn't care less, as long as they have their Spotify!
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

I do not use Spotify that much anymore (and I certainly do not pay for their premium tier anymore), but when I want to download music, sometimes it becomes a pain if its not on Amazon, Beatport, or JunoDownload.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

It's actually one of the reasons why I subscribed to Spotify premium again. That "ai war" thing is a great defence tool and is what might save me and my family from a Russian invasion.
in reply to Andrea

@ott0disk Spotify schmotify I don’t care, but I am grateful Ukraine is fighting Putin and giving him a hard time time. My 3 kids are in line to be deployed if he attacks here.
in reply to Mårten Paulsson

@MArtenp
Yes, whatever the company I will support it if it's fighting Putin. And I really hope he's defeated before he can try something stupid in Finland or the baltics.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

still not, no. have my collection of music files since nearly three decades
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

easy to say "don't use x" without "do use y if you want music in your life" :(
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

If you really wanna go down the rabbit hole, most of the tech we rely on is tied to some really bad things somewhere. I would rather let artists handle this for themselves, as there are other options and they can go somewhere else and take their music with them. Spotify is by no means a monopoly. If they are still there, must mean it's still good or better than alternatives.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Look at what you listen to most on spotify, then go and but the music, preferably from the artist's own website...
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Spotify donated to trumps inauguration and that's when I stopped giving them money. They also pay artists poorly and some refuse to have their music on Spotify as a result.

Quobuz is the best alternative I've found and is French.

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Qobuz is a great alternative to Spotify and pays artists the most out of all other streaming services.

Buying music outright is still the best move.

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Leaving #spotify? Have an old computer laying around? Why not use this opportunity to start #selfhosting your own media library?

With free and #opensource software like #navidrome or #jellyfin, you can have your own private (or semi-private) streaming service, and listen on any device!

in reply to sb arms & legs

@sb Navidrome is absolutely fire! I have used a lot through last years and it's rock solid with small inconveniences with artist separation. It's also REALLY lightweight (ran it in a dual core 1.3ghz, 2GB RAM Windows 8 machine and it worked fine with multiple playbacks at once). It really feels like Spotify when you start building a library music you have prestige and if I had a spare hard drive I would definitively switch back.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

This is one of my Summer vacation tasks - transferring my podcast subscriptions to AntennaPod.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

never been in the first place. Always used tidal, but I honestly don't know if that is any better. In terms of paying musicians almost certainly not.

Is there any streaming service worth endorsing? Or is streaming just inherently part of the problem?

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Are any of the other streaming music services with more or less complete catalogs of major-label music actually any better, or would the only ethically consistent position be to quit using streaming music altogether and go back to maintaining one's own collection?
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

i should really start to contribute to siMusic. I only use this app now. Even though Qobuz look nice from what I understood
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Do you still support Ukraine?

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

fins on sé Deezer o Tidal són bones alternatives

Jo faig servir Kreate de la fdroid store (yt music sense anuncis) i quan puc compro els meus àlbums preferits

#spotifyalternatives #spotifyalternative #kreate #deezer #tidal

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Nah. I never really liked Spotify. Chose Tidal instead. Mostly for better quality (bitrate etc) music, and the fact that it focuses on music, not other stuff. I'm sure it's got it's own issues, but these days it's about choosing the lesser of multiple evils.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

I dumped Spotify they day they started being Joe Roegan's fluffer. I wish my cancellation made a bigger difference. This shit is just too out of control.

Lately I've been holding onto my own copies of music and podcasts as tightly as I can.

@ott0disk when you’re up against the wall he is, I guess.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Wowwza! I've been thinking about leaving spotify a few times... Now I have a *very* good argument to finally search for an alternative!

Why can't people - at least once they reach their first fucking billion - just stop thinking about making more money???
Why do they - instead of being really happy that they can do other stuff than having to care for themselves - just drop ALL their morale to get *more rich*? Makes me sick.

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

They've also been using AI to create fake "DJ personas", i.e., they've reinvented radio from the 1970s. It's weird as hell.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

So what I take from this, is that you'd rather send humans to the front-lines instead? :stallman_thaenkin:

@datarama That sounds like the devil trying to convince you that he shouldn't exist.

What about centimillionaires? Decamillionaire? Multimillionaires?

What if they are boomers who loaded their 401K plans and worked in industry then switched to high level academia in expensive locales like NYC or D.C?

What is an acceptable lifetime wealth level achievement? Just wondering if the line to cross is billion and why?

Oh yeah, down with tech bros!

Your emphasis is that he's developing AI tech for war and that you seemingly hate that idea a lot.
So one can easily conclude that you'd rather have humans be sent to fight on the frontlines instead.

That's not me "misinterpreting" a "well articulated sentence", that's just you not realizing what you said.

Then let us hear your *brilliant* third alternative? :stallman_thaenkin:
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

what's the alternative streaming service? All of apple music, Deezer, Amazon, YouTube, etc seem pretty shit in general of ethics is considered.

I would like artists to get paid, and going pirate would certainly eliminate my funding but also would eliminate the little royalty artists are paid.

could have answered the implied question 🤷 But someone else already did earlier, though idk that those have better owners necessarily, seems like everything can be hated for one reason or another

@jeffreyskelton At the limit: Musk in 2022 could just decide to buy Twitter; Musk in 2002 couldn't.

When I hear "military AI" I think of that scene in RoboCop where the military robot murders a board member in the executive offices because it was just so stupid
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Stopped using Spotify years ago.
I'm still alive.
I still listen to the music I love whenever I want.

even better, use spotify with adblock : rightfully refuse to fund the company but use their bandwith anyway. Here's a guide reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/y…

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

didn’t @stux make a really
Cool Spotify alternative or something.
I can’t remember the name
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

Support the artists you like, buy their stuff on bandcamp instead of paying for spotify premium too.
in reply to jeffskelton

@jeffreyskelton @datarama Any absolute number will be wrong at some point. The amount has to be pinned down to lifetime spending in given country, so that there is an incentive for this number to go up. And median so that it's not feasible go game by pouring more $ into the system. Then figure out some multiplication factor to make it feel "safe".
in reply to jeffskelton

@jeffreyskelton Nobody is proposing a strict legal cutoff on wealth accumulation. We don't need to quibble over this.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

tbh I deleted my account a few years ago when I saw a photo of him at (I assume) an investor conference wearing a shirt with a guitar on it. Not saying that's worse than AI war machines but y'know.

manipulative, yes. sociopath, no. you are not his doctor, and he is not your patient.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

I should ditch Spotify, but I haven't yet. First, several years ago, I signed up for a family plan with 5 friends at my workplace. We all get it as a discount, and if I drop out, they'll be inconvenienced.

That's the main reason, but the convenience of being able to easily listen to almost anything is so powerful. For all the benefits of a self-owned media collection, I can't imagine giving that up.

One problem that still needs to be solved is sharing playlists.

in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

left Spotify a few months back after being a customer for several years. Now I’m using the money I used to pay Spotify, for buying music from Bandcamp and Qobuz and feeling great that the artists are getting the majority of what I pay. A side effect is that I’m listening more to the music I have and actually enjoying it more. I’m also discovering new artists by reading the influences of the artists I already know, as well as checking fellow bandcamp user profiles that comment on the artists I love to see what else they like.
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

oh dang I need to delete that app too?! Please list alternatives, I like to listen to music and podcasts
in reply to Dave Rahardja 🎄

@hacks4pancakes I quit Spotify back when this happened, but the other players (Apple & Google) are similarly terrible and their tech hasn’t gotten better. 🫠
