"Over the many centuries of its history, humanity has grown accustomed to viewing the use of force as the last resort for resolving differences: “Might makes right.” Yes, sometimes this principle does work. Indeed, sometimes countries have no other choice than to stand for their interests with arms in hand and using all available means." - #Putin

Let me translate that into an understandable form:
We only respect international law and international treaties if they benefit us, otherwise the law of the strongest applies and he enforces this law by force if necessary. This has always been the case since the dawn of mankind.

Are peace and safety not good things? It depends on how you achieve them. Graveyards are peaceful.

I think this clause is the key here though. Obviously Putin had other choices. He chose War to attain his interests.

There was an almost perfect West/East split between the contenders. The half that lost was heavily punished, and the civil war started (of course fuelled by Putin, but not actually his sole creation).
Zelensky (a Russian speaker) was elected precisely to heal that rift. I don't know if he was himself entirely sincere (I think he probably was) but private interests (oligarchs) and US and its lackeys prevented him from changing the country's course towards the abyss.
If you didn't watch the series "Sluga Narodna" starring Zelinsky, it's absolutely a must-see to understand what happened (and it's pretty good). It also makes clear that his rise to power was largely fabricated.
