#WordWeavers Jan 1: What are your wildest (writing-related) dreams for this year?
"Wildest"? Whip my novel into shape and have it inexplicably picked up for publication by a scrappy little indie that somehow manages to make it a hit that gets optioned for a mini-series on the CBC that, itself, is a surprise global hit, thus sparking a career as a writer of books that then get turned into profitable, artsy SFF films and television (and comics, god dammit!).

in reply to EmpyClaw • • •Oh, *none* of that is going to happen! Getting an agent, let alone getting publishes, is a full-time job, and I already have one of those (that pays well and that I love dearly), so short of someone "discovering" me, I'm a hobbyist.
The question was "wildest dreams," so dreamed big.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 2: How do your MCs talk? Describe their voice and speech.
My protagonist is direct to the point of bluntness, and then apologizes afterwards.
One side character initially finds it hard to finish sentences and just gets the gist across.
One is kind of whiny but she doesn't mean it that way.
The last one is... a goof. Such a goof. I love him so much.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 3: What does the way your MC talks reveal about them?
She's fearless. Not because she's especially brave, exactly, but because she grew up in an environment where she was allowed to speak her mind, so she just... does.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 4: Describe an uncomfortable situation a character experiences.
She and her friends are telepathic. It's sensory and emotional rather than linguistic. As in, their don't *hear* words in their heads. At one point, her friend reveals he's got a crush on her. It's awkward for a bit, but they get over it.

When they first learn to send thoughts and impressions telepathically--and bear in mind that they're teenagers--one of them sends a fart.

Something where she's a general sending troops to their deaths.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 7. What’s your MC’s family like?
Really tight and loving. Very supportive. Her parents are "permissive" in the best ways. They *permit* their kids to do all kinds of things because they've created a safe space to explore and grow and learn, and they're confident their kids will come to them for help and support.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 8. Antagonist POV: What advice would you give to people 10 years younger than you?
Tremblay (sixty-something woman, speaking slowly and carefully in a Quebecois accent): "You must not long for fame or accolade. What we do here is silent. It is unseen. The world will never know what we have sacrificed for them."

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 9. Have you invented any words/sayings/swears etc. for your story?
Not for this one, no. It's nominally YA, so there's no swearing in it. For my last project, I looked up Ancient Greek swearing, but it was mostly variations on "god damn you," so I stuck with familiar, working-class invective.

"Have I got a book? Yes? I'm good."
Orion (he/him)
in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 11: What does the opening chapter of your story reveal about the world it’s set in?
It's the anthropocene, and humanity has taken full responsibility for the ecosystem that it *broke*. Anarcho-socialist organization was key to the transformation; most people on the N.American continent live in super-dense urban strips up and down the coasts, organized around arcologies.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 12: Does your MC have a good support system?
She built one out of the three other kids she happened to have been abducted with. They wouldn't have been friends otherwise, but after what happened, they will be for life.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 13: Where was your latest writing session? How did it go?
In my office. It went fine. This is going back a few months, now, but I laid down a decent rough draft, and then I did two major revisions. I'm still not super happy with it, but I think it's ready for an actual Second Draft.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 14: If your MCs lived your antagonists’ lives, what would they be like?
If they live the antagonist's life, they'd be the antagonist. There's no "essence" in the core of them that makes them Not Bad Guys. Their lives made them who they are. A different life would result in a different person.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 15: MC POV: What’s the most exciting thing that ever happened to you?
"The first time I won a tournament. The crowd seemed huge. All the other gymnasts were bigger and older than me. And then I did my routine, and beat them all. People were clapping and yelling *for me*. I loved it.
"But now, I just expect it. I always win."

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 17: If cost wasn’t an issue, what would your ideal setting be for you to write in?
A hotel room on the 20th floor with gym access, a pool, a restaurant, and room service. Take the TV off the wall.
Alternatively, a cabin in the woods in the winter, fully stocked and electrified and wifi'd (none of this "back to nature" stuff).
On both cases, a full-time nanny so that my wife isn't all by herself, taking care of the kids.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 19: Who is the most moral character in your story?
River, my little hippie girl. She voices my own mature morality but in the language of a ten-year-old. My lead, Grace, is the most *righteous*, but that's not the same. :)

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#Wordweavers Jan 20: Do you make use of weather in your story? If so, how?
When my protagonist, Grace, returns to Vancouver after having been held prisoner in a paramilitary cult, she walks out onto the street and feels the rain on her head for the first time in two years. I tried to really get into the feeling of rain hitting your head and soaking into your clothes. Rain = home.

in reply to Orion (he/him) • • •#WordWeavers Jan 21. If in the middle of the book your MC discovered a foundling, what would they do with it?
Keep it away from the paramilitary child-soldier cult she's been abducted into. Unless she "found" it *in* the cult, in which case... gah. That's a bad scene.
