in reply to Sherri W (SyntaxSeed)

@syntaxseed I imagine this is probably illegal in the U.S., much of the behavior of Uber (and Lyft and others) like this is a clear violation of labor laws that has been well-documented by journalists.

But, the NLRB hasn't had teeth in decades, and I'm sure this current administration has muzzled them anyway.

Join or start a union, if you can. See what @WorkingFamilies is up to in your area, too. The rich are going to squeeze you until you die, and they've made sure the government won't protect you, so the working-class have to protect each other.

in reply to Sherri W (SyntaxSeed)

@syntaxseed I had to read a some pages before I could believe that. My European mind cannot cope with that.

@LiamEgan @syntaxseed In Spain we have public, universal healthcare. It is in the hands of the regional governments, and the administrators make plenty of use of days' contracts for nurses and doctors. It is fucking shameful, but at the same time most doctors are a "declassé" class, so what can you do?
in reply to Cory Doctorow

👉 Do you want to your catheter inserted by a nurse on food stamps, who drove an Uber until midnight the night before, and skipped breakfast this morning in order to make rent?"

Nurses already had enough problems.

👉 "Before Shiftkey offers a nurse a shift, it purchases that worker's credit history from a data-broker. Specifically, it pays to find out how much credit-card debt the nurse is carrying, and whether it is overdue.

The more desperate the nurse's financial straits are, the lower the wage on offer. Because the more desperate you are, the less you'll accept to come and do the gruntwork of caring for the sick, the elderly, and the dying."

Which is funny, because they already can't fill nursing positions. Normally, it would be a labor-seller's market, not an employers' market.
in reply to ferricoxide

@ferricoxide And at this very moment, local hospitals are desperately short of nurses, for the most foolish of reasons mastodon.social/@MatWright/114…

big h/t to @pluralistic for presenting in a mask. Gotta model the behaviour.

@BritishTechGuru yes, I've done the gap/short shift in minimum wage/food service jobs and even when it is really short it still costs in travel expenses/fuel/uniform cleaning/time and days like that can over-run your take home pay (and hopefully it balances out with full shifts).

Edit to add- this is US specific, other countries have different rules.

Contrary to what some Americans say, the regulations are among the best things about the EU.

Cory Doctorow reshared this.

in reply to Björn 🎄 Starkimarm

@Starkimarm in my view, Europe is over-regulated on the start up front. This is an opinion based on experience advising startups located in: US, Spain, Italy, Australia, UK, and Israel as well as spinning up many European branches of small US concerns.

Regulation is an important tool, especially when it comes to huge multinationals. But regulation also stifles innovation.

Can we get a movement started to bring Cory back to Canada to lead the NDP?

@jhavok @noplasticshower @Starkimarm That's because "deregulation" is a meaningless phrase unless it specifies which regulations are being removed, and which regulations are being preserved, and which regulations are being put in place.
