In 1998, Congress committed an act of mass cultural erasure, extending copyright by 20 years, including for existing works (including ones that were already in the public domain), and for 20 years, virtually *nothing* entered the US public domain.

Honestly I really just want copyright to be bound to the humans who actually created a work, and ownership to be non-transferable. So if you write a book, you own it, and can extend permissions for use to others as you see fit, but they can never "own" it, you retain the capacity to retract those rights, extend them to others, etc. for the duration it's protected. (With death of the author(s) as a hard-limit on duration.)
So if I license your book to make a movie, and spend ten years of my life making it, and then release it, you can make me destroy it?
We'd replace the system whereby any musician is allowed to record any song by paying a fixed fee with one where you have to track down and license every composition?
We'd kill the ability of musicians to perform live covers by paying a blanket license?
Authors could delete your ebooks from your Kindle?
Those cases would still be covered by contracts to extend rights to others, no? "Retract those rights" was not the best way to phrase what I mean; I don't mean you can arbitrarily pull out of rights agreements, but that authors can't be locked out of their own creative works and have some authority to prevent things like their work going into some vault unused and unusable for 60 years.
