The IRS will do your taxes for you (if that's what you prefer): After years of expensively purchased delay, Turbotax and its fellow tax-profiteers are losing the fight to make you pay them to tell the government what it already knows.

America is a world leader in allowing private companies to levy taxes on its citizens, including (stay with me here), *a tax on paying your taxes*.

“Take the Child Tax Credit. This is the most successful social program in living memory, a single initiative that did more to lift American children out of poverty than any other since the days of the Great Society. It turns out that giving poor people money makes them less poor, which is weird, because neoliberal economists have spent decades assuring us that this is not the case” Doctorow

I remain apoplectic about the fact that the Intuit settlement for 4.4 million Americans -- undoubtedly just the ones informed about the lawsuit -- was a mere $141m, a grand total of $32 apiece. Before, you know, processing fees.

For a company like Intuit, that's not merely chump change, that's a single drop of red ink in a ledger of damnation. But ever is it so for corporations like them: such settlements are simply The Cost of Doing Business.

nail on the damn head once again

"One final note, addressing the people who are worried that the IRS will cheat innocent taxpayers by not giving them all the benefits they're entitled to. Allow me here to simply tap the sign that says "between 13 and 22 percent of EITC (poverty reduction) benefits are gulped down by tax prep companies.""

in reply to Krupo

@krupo The IRS has, on at least two occasions in my life, written me a letter and a check to correct my return and pay me more than I thought I was due in a refund.

The idea that the IRS can't do *at least* as good a job free filing as Intuit is farcical.

in reply to Jeff Craig

@foxxtrot @krupo I just got a small check from the equivalent in the state of Illinois for an error on a complex tax problem my preparer didn't fully understand, either. I hope that sentence makes sense.
in reply to Michael Helm

@mwhelm @foxxtrot @krupo I got a check this year from the Feds for an error that Intuit made that I wasn’t smart enough to notice.
in reply to Cory Doctorow

Just opened my $29.30 settlement check from Intuit. They definitely owe me (and everyone else) more for sure.

I used their software for a couple years knowing I was getting ripped off but assuming better tax help was more expensive. When I was working minimum wage I also didn’t have the time or energy to research better options.
