If there's one area where tech has shown a consistent aptitude for innovation, it's in accounting tricks that make money-losing companies appear wildly profitable. And AI is the greatest innovator of all (when it comes to accounting gimmicks).

Don't want to sound cynic, but that's exactly what C-suite types in general do (with small exceptions, but I can count managers who had C-level job titles and a working brain, and worked hard and in a general positive way, in my 3 decades of industry experience on the fingers): gaslight. Talk bullshit. Make politicians look like people who talk about concrete details.

@yacc143 my CEO is top-notch, and it's why I don't want to leave my org, among many reasons.

He genuinely gives a shit about us.

At a moment's notice, a major investor can order even the most kind or competent manager to fire anyone & everyone.

Regardless of the condition of the company.

Profitable. Growing. Promising future.

Billionaire Chris Hohn ordered a profitable Google to do mass layoffs, and they did.

really starting to feel like all gas no brakes straight into a huge wall. It’s felt that way before. Dot com as you said, other hilarious tech events, even the housing collapse and then ‘rona. Current state coupled with AI pressing the gas and generalized civil unrest, it feels different this time.

@elebertus
Yeah, because this time we really do have a real fascist government in the US, advancing a racist and anti-labour agenda, with a secret police kidnapping people off the street, with a budget the size of a medium sized nation...

The age of the scam, if it's not loss-making companies buoyed by vulture capitalist investments it's bitcoin and the blockchain and now LLMs, just a constant array of scams and deceptions.

Yes, it would be amazing if it wasn't so appalling, how long some of these bubbles can be kept going by crazy accounting. Actually, the waste and environmental consequences are sickening...

@pa27 Ah, these bubbles are actually safe-guarded in a much uglier way.

Pension funds.

The system Cory described might only serve a tiny slice of the US population. But to protect it from the mob with pitchforks, they took the pensions of the population as hostages.

I'm not surprised when the extent of big tech "innovation" is shittier versions of forums & blogs.

To be fair, they also produced an ample amount of innovation in the exploitation of labour and other resources. This seems to be where most innovation is taking place nowadays anyway.
