Just before the pandemic, I picked up a frame drum: it changed how I listen to the world!
In this 30 sec. video, I play Baladi + Maksum rhythms on my Meinl Sonic Energy Flower of Life drum (goatskin head, natural wood).
The Flower of Life symbolizes unity + creation in sacred geometry. Not just a drum: it's a portal.
I now play:
π With bells: Kanjira, Tambourine, Persian daf (still learning)
π Without: Buffalo / Shamanic drum, Egyptian tar, Turkish bendir
Frame drumming has deep roots in womenβs history. The first named drummer? Lipushiau, Mesopotamia, 2380 BCE.
What ancient practice helps you feel most alive?

in reply to Crissy β₯π£π • • •My ancient practice is following cycles in the night sky. It's a touchstone, it's a measure of the passage of my life at different rhythms.
Daily march of sunrise and sunset
Monthly cycle of the moon
Yearly cycle of the constellations
Synodic and sidereal cycles of the bright planets. My favorite is Jupiter. From our earthly point of view it takes about 12 years for it to make one lap around the ecliptic. I've watched it do over four laps.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_β¦
time taken for a given object to make one complete orbit around another object, and applies in astronomy to mostly either planets or asteroids orbiting the Sun, moons orbiting planets, exoplanets orbiting other stars, or binary stars
