Universal Campus: The mother of all mega-regions

in reply to Jupiter Rowland

The above post is my contribution to World Sight Day in the Fediverse and Global Accessibility Awareness Day, just to show that I do describe my images, and that I do so in a way that I think is appropriate, considering how niche my images are. It is my first image post in three months.

There is only one image in this post, but with an alt-text of precisely 1,500 characters plus a long image description of 60,553 characters. That's more than 50% longer than my previous record.

I don't know how many hours exactly I've invested into describing this image. But I started writing the description on Monday. I missed some nice, sunny, warm days because I had to describe this image. I did the last edits today.

I understand better now. I was unaware of some of those things, like glitch and specifically how Tweesecake handles certain things.

With that in mind I need to clarify. When I went across that post. It read everything that was not alt text in what I assume is the manner you wanted. Then after that it then reads the alt text. I hope that helps explain what I mean.

in reply to Baethyn

@Baethyn So apparently, the left-over alt-text in the post was either ignored by your screen reader, or you're using Glitch through a Mastodon app rather than the Web interface.

In either case, there shouldn't be any difference to vanilla Mastodon, and it should be what I've expected.

please do not write SIXTY THOUSAND characters of alt text lmao wtf
in reply to Greg

@Greg Do you really think this image can fully, adequately be described in 200 characters like some cat photo?

Besides, the 60,000 characters are not alt-text. Alt-text is what goes into the image, and the alt-text is 1,500 characters here.

Stop thinking that alt-text and image description are one and the same, Mastodon!

Yes. Your image is not that special.

in reply to Greg

@Greg In such a way that everyone gets what's in the picture? Without ever Googling or asking me anything?

Then go ahead and give me a good, informative image description of no more than 200 characters that's up there with the best of the best on Mastodon and potential @Alt Text Hall of Fame material. One that won't leave any blind user asking, "Yeah, that's fine and dandy, but what does it look like?!"

Without reading my long description or my alt-text first, that is.

in reply to Jupiter Rowland

why wouldn't people be allowed to google or ask you. that doesn't make any sense at all
in reply to Greg

@Greg They're allowed. But that's inconvenient and ableist.

Everyone, blind or visually-impaired people included, has the right to get right away what the picture shows without having to ask and without having to Google.

Otherwise I wouldn't even have to describe the image at all. Blind users could just as well ask me what's in it, right?

in reply to Jupiter Rowland

the extreme detail you have provided is _not even depicted in the image_ so no, you're definitely doing it wrong. if I wish to post a picture of an apple pie I do not need to first describe the Universe
in reply to Greg

@Greg Absolutely everything I've described visually is actually within the borders of the image. And unless I explicitly write otherwise, it is not concealed or obscured either.

The explanations are there for people to understand a) the image and b) my description.

in reply to Jupiter Rowland

all right it's clear you have a weird pathology about this one particular subject, so just note that at least one person has now said directly "your image descriptions are FAR too long"
in reply to Greg

@Greg I'm still challenging you to do better with fewer characters while still providing all necessary informations for completely clueless laypeople to get the image without having to Google or ask me.
