It's happening! Tomorrow I leave for Aotearoa New Zealand to visit a whole bunch of amateur astronomy clubs (to yell about satellite pollution) and then spend a few weeks with collaborators at University of Canterbury (to yell about satellite pollution, and hopefully also talk about the Kuiper Belt and interstellar objects!)

I am looking forward to new foods, visiting farms, having conversations with farmers and astronomers, and different stars (hello MAGELLENIC CLOUDS!!) #ProfSamLectureTour

My first week of talks includes Whangārei events.humanitix.com/astronomy…

Then Auckland eventbrite.co.nz/e/astronomy-v…

Then Hamilton has.org.nz/bht-registration-20…

(Bonus: in Hamilton I've been invited to visit the "methane barn" where they study emissions from cows and I'm so here for this) #ProfSamLectureTour

aww, no time at Wai-iti Dark Sky Park? Maybe next time you're down this way.

darn it. I’m in the US while you are in NZ. Would have loved to attend your talk. Enjoy NZ

Eeeee! So very excited for you. Looking forward to those NZ posts from you as well. Have fun and travel safely!

It is _unlikely_ but if you find the time/excuse pay a visit to Niue - the clearest skies I've ever seen and the most lovely chilled folks. Fish is good there too.

The southern sky is a helluva sight, especially in some of NZ's dark areas. Enjoy!

Jason and Anna Flowerday at Te Whare Ra Winery in Marlborough do some really interesting things with cows, vines, and cover crops.

bon voyage! May your travels be smoother than anything involving Toronto last weekend: I was helping someone who was having to fly from Regina through Toronto and that was really a struggle. I was actually glad that I cancelled my trip to Regina.

I'm also looking forward to my reading + midterm week trip to Aotearoa. Wellington and then Cascade Saddle via CHC. Somehow, though, accommodation is ridiculously expensive near Wānaka.

Have a great inspiring and successful time with interesting contacts and sheep!

Please say hello to my daughter and her husband. They moved there from Oregon a few years ago. My dad travelled to Ayers Rock in Australia with a friend when Halley's Comet last visited us. It was the highlight of a long amateur relationship with the cosmos.

Ooh, I hope you have a super lovely and productive time over here. Safe travels!

Enjoy it! The Kiwis are a really nice bunch of people 🙂 👍

hi professor lawler, will your talks and discussion be available online after or will there be a live broadcast?

i am quite interested in this topic and do not know much about it!

A note about phones: There are a few companies, because of privatization back in the day, and the one to beware of is One NZ. They're in the middle of a promotional campaign where they tell us they're great because they use satellites. Even with all our remote areas, the ground based networks have nearly equal coverage.

hope you have a wonderful time here. Do you have the full tour schedule? Aka any plans to visit Taranaki? 😅

And also not freezing for a week or 2. I hope you have an amazing time. :)

if you haven’t already, I recommend reading the delightful vignettes by @georgepenney - as an Aussie who has never crossed the ditch, I feel like I know the place a lot better having read so many of George’s toots.
