In 1991, a uni student from Finland started a "hobby" project because he couldn't afford to pay expensive Unix license that could run on a commodity hardware. At the time, he told on the mailing list that his project wouldn't be anything "big or professional."

It turned out that he was totally wrong.

Happy 56th Birthday to the creator of Linux kernel and git, Linus Torvalds! May you live healthy and happy forever. Thank you for all your hard work and providing us employment and keep it FLOSS😊

Didn't realize it was that recent, yet that should be obvious now I think about it. And he's not that much older than I am.

Happy Birthday to the Linux man himself! Changed my life forever 😄

Way back in the 1990 I got my first Linux on 14 x 3,5 inch Floppies. But #14 didn't work. I got it fixed somehow to replace it and got hooked to Linux for ever and I still am. It not only changed my live, starting diving deeper an deeper. It fascinated me with the idea of free and open software and this will be our future now to escape from all monetary thoughts to see users only as customers trying to get their money. The word "free" must be the same out of every angle of every view

At that point in time, he was correct that it was neither big nor professional. It became big and professional when others started to contribute.

It's always kinda mind-blowing that someone slightly younger than myself created a "small project" that ended up being just a bit more successful than that yet the vast majority of it's users (smart or other electronic devices) are completely oblivious to what #Linux is or who is Linus Torvalds.

I've always been jealous of his huge penguin collection and I'm sure he'll get more for his birthday. What the heck, he has long since earned the Diamond Penguin!

"Happy Birthday"

I just want people to know I named my child Linus after Van Pelt, not Torvalds.

I first installed Linux on a new laptop in 1997. I wasn't smart enough to figure out how to maintain windows, so I have been using Linux as my desktop all this time.

"because he couldn't afford to pay expensive Unix license that could run on a commodity hardware."

And now we can't afford building unlocked commodity hardware to be able to run free software either from the vendor or modified by us.

Happy birthday.

It's crazy what a community he built despite being quite the opposite of an agreeable person. 😅
I sometimes wonder if the Linux Kernel would've been equally successful with a more laissez-faire communication - I have doubts about it.
