Instagram, Imgur, and Tumblr all have one thing in common:

They ban porn and nipples because advertisers don't want to be associated.

Luckily @pixelfed and other platforms embrace freedom and choice.

Imgur blocking Adult/NSFW content is most likely influenced by their monetization strategy.

You know why they (and Tumblr/IG) want to block Adult/NSFW content?

Ads. Advertisers don't want their ads (and brand) to be associated with adult/NSFW content.

We aren't beholden to advertisers, and embrace freedom of expression. We have no plans to ban NSFW content.

just side note - funny how they struggle with hate speech though. Advertisers have no issue with that apparently.

I would say pixelfed embrace freedom in the context of respect for the community.

Won’t Apple take issue with allowing it into the App Store at some point for the same reasons?

@philsherry This is a common misconception with NSFW content, they don't allow outright porn apps but you are allowed to have NSFW content if it's not displayed by default.

Ahh, thought were just flat-out Nanny State with this stuff.

@philsherry
"If your app includes user-generated content from a web-based service, it may display incidental mature “NSFW” content, provided that the content is hidden by default and only displayed when the user turns it on via your website."

@philsherry more pressing to Pixelfed will likely be the liability around showing sexually explicit content to people under the age of 18 — in Germany that's a crime with fine or jail time, same in a number of other jurisdictions

@z428 They blocked the NSFW content due to Ads, you're allowed to display NSFW content if it's hidden by default.

@philsherry‬ Tumblr allows nudity behind Community Labels to satisfy the hidden by default requirement. help.tumblr.com/hc/en-us/artic…

However, 1.1.4 is one reason why you see basically no porn apps on the App Store:

“Apps should not include content that is offensive…Examples of such content include:

Overtly sexual or pornographic material, defined as "explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings."”
