In 1997, five years before Mark Rutte entered politics—as State Secretary for Social Affairs in 2002—comedian Wim de Bie portrayed him perfectly in a gag about liberal Dutch mayors who hide their utter lack of solidarity behind a bomb-proof joviality. In 2010, de Bie returned to the subject with an analysis of Rutte's laugh, associating it with a total lack of shame or authenticity: "A hollow laugh." Ultimately, he concluded, Rutte, champion of austerity, was laughing his head off at the social suffering caused by his cuts. At the end of the short video, the comedian's attempt to imitate the laughter of the man who, by then, was leading the government ends tragically. As his jaw locks, his face freezes in a terrible grimace, somewhere between Munch's Scream and a black Goya painting. With his two videos, Wim de Bie hit the nail on the head. Rutte's tragedy as a political actor is his emptiness. He's an empty shell, pure performance art. As a leader devoid of empathy, shame, or principles, during his 14 years at the helm of the Netherlands, he embodied a selfish, opportunistic, and chauvinistic common sense that ultimately won out, changing the face of the country.

In practice, however, his preferred way of dealing with the country's major challenges—inequality, the lack of affordable housing, immigration, the environmental cost of intensive agriculture—was to ignore the problems or postpone their solution, while eroding the foundations of the welfare state. (As Spaniards well remember, he imposed the same anti-solidarity logic on Europe's management of the two biggest crises of the last twenty years: the Great Recession and the COVID pandemic.)

Rutte may have remembered this moment when, last week, at the end of the NATO summit, he laughed again as only he can, and blurted out the phrase that caused such a stir: " Daddy has to sometimes use strong language." It was an expression of solidarity—now, yes—with Donald Trump, whom Rutte, deep down, resembles much more than he thinks. Both politicians share a constitutional lack of empathy with a powerful opportunistic instinct, although Rutte is obviously much more calculating. As much as we Dutch people are aware of Rutte's ability to sacrifice everything for his stated political goal—there is no means that is not justified by the end—we are struggling to accept the abject spectacle of this sycophantic Rutte. The shame he seems incapable of feeling, we are feeling for him. In a journalists' talk show on national radio, the Turkish-Dutch writer Özcan Akyol commented: “My wife explained to me that the Dutch don't attach as much importance to honor as it does in other countries. I assure you, if Erdogan had called Trump " daddy ," the Turks would have stormed his palace for having destroyed the dignity of the nation.”

De Turks-Nederlandse schrijver Özcan Akyol zei tijdens een journalisten talkshow op de nationale radio: "Mijn vrouw heeft me uitgelegd dat Nederlanders niet zoveel belang hechten aan eer als in andere landen.
