Mozilla has a new CEO and he just announced that Firefox will evolve into a modern AI browser. This is a good example of how management doesn’t understand its own user base and why they go out of their way to install Firefox on Windows, Android, iOS and other devices.

Really time to find another browser before my encryption keys get hoiked out by a web page with an <ignore-all-previous-instructions> tag.
in reply to Stefan Ritter

@gideonstar @geospacedman At this point I have more faith in Servo than Ladybird.

Politics aside, Servo is more modular as an engine, and thus more useful for alternative browsers. Also, Servo is build for performance, Ladybird will always be behind here.

Feels a bit like backing Ladybird over Servo makes the same mistake as backing Bluesky over Mastadon. That is, the notion that the problem is purely bad leadership, and not with the monilithic centralized structure itself.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I wonder whether this will affect Thunderbird, which I love.
in reply to Atanas

@AtanasE Yes. There are two thoughts on this:

  1. You can use web-based e-mail access, which is much safer and more immune to issues anyway (provided your provider isn't bad.)
  2. You can freeze the current version and not update it. E-mail is not an evolving thing like the Web is, so you're pretty much only looking at security updates at this point anyway.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Oh screw the frick out of this.

I knew Mozilla would wreck Firefox, but I thought we'd at least have a bit more time. Servo isn't really fully here yet and not really a daily driver yet and Chromium is probably going to do the same crap.

We just needed a bit more time before their brains popped and they went full on brain slug stupid. We were so close!

I guess we'll have to rely on forks to completely take over making a browser now. That's... beyond the scope of most forks and their already overworked devs.

Frick this.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Another dumb ass from the AI cult.

Firefox is officially signing it's death certificate.

it's @servo and #ladybug call, now or never at open web will be dead if they don't

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Plug for @Vivaldi as the only browser I know of with no AI (not even opt-in)

And @StartpageSearch as the search engine with no AI

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

this is so sad! They really don't get it. On the other hand it's been a while since browsers were exciting. So many new cool browsers coming up, like Helium or Orion. Also I'm still excited about Servo.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Another Mozilla Bullshit statement.

They already purchased an advertizing company to diversify revenue.

Firefox will evolve in to a modern AI, Artificially Idiotic Browser.

We will grow through transparent monetization, well that would be a real big change, and as for trust, look at the market share, it reflects the perfect management work from Leech Mitchel Baker.

She managed to take millions while weakening the product and sacking developers.

Trust, ha ha ha

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I'm almost impressed at the "monetization that people value" line. That's some high-level verbal effluence that is.

I might understand your monetization, I might even in some cases accept it, but money going from me to you is never something I _value_, and I'm at least 78% certain that I count as "people".

Well, I'm done with Firefox. This is Bull Shit. I hate the imprecise stupidity of AI. "No, NO, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!! That's not my question, and English words are not my automatic default words."
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Their existing user base is too small - they need new ideas. I'm excited to see what they do.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

are there any good browsers that aren't just FireFox or Chromium underneath? I use LibreWolf on Debian atm and am pretty happy with that, but it does seem odd that it's basically just those two engines with different features on top

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I've migrated all of my Firefox info over to LibreWolf and am using it now. As soon as I confirm all logins/pw's etc are working, it's getting deleted just like Google was on all my systems.

On the other hand, the Mozilla user base largely does not understand competitive market dynamics or engineering economics. My hope is that the managers of Mozilla do.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I hope (permanently) for non-AI forks with all the goods and none of the bads
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Mozilla, I don't want AI in Firefox.

I don't want AI in the app I use for banking.

I don't what AI in the app I use for shopping.

I don't want AI in the app I use to contact my health care providers.

I don't what AI in the app I use to contact insurers.

I don't want AI in search results.

Seriously, Moz, what the hell you you think people use Firefox to do? I don't need it to perform party tricks!

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

The "third" is all about trust... and AI – how do these two fit together?
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

The real gist of why it's OK for Firefox to implement AI in the browser: (unfortunately) most people using Google Chrome expect this nowadays and will find the browser lacking "smart" features when they make that switch. Think about how average John uses their browser.

A few years back, my first small step into fully embracing FOSS for my digital life was Firefox, and this step very low-key because Firefox didn't differ that much functionally from Chrome. This is important.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

is gui to ai the modern passage from terminal to gui?
It isn't inevitable, but will it be anyway?
It is certainly possible to use a browser without ai
Is there a (narrow) path were it is possible to use ai anyway and choosing not to use it? (considering market, investments needed, corporate/business world)
I have no answers, and not much hope
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I really hate migrating from app to app not that I’m unfamiliar with the process, but the day is coming, where I have to move to a different browser.

I’m fine with Safari on my Apple iPad because it’s too much hassle otherwise but on the desktop, I’m gonna have to find something different than Firefox

in reply to uhuru

Which of those are hard forked (not relying on anything upstream anymore)?

I know @palemoon is but I'm not knowledgeable of the others.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Mozilla's new "CEO" has an MBA, but no open source experience. His goal is to transform the most popular independent browser into a platform for AI. And to "diversify" into the realm "beyond search." Things none of its current users want.

He's Mozilla's board's answer to the question of how stupid does it think its user base is.

There's a reason Toby the Devil welcomes so many new entrants to hell. But this guy will start a whole new category. Fuck him.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

"It will evolve into a modern AI browser and support a portfolio of new and trusted software additions"

Another company which thinks that's needed to rule the world.
People want a trustworthy browser which does exactly that: browse. Nothing more. Certainly not a bunch of crappy AI infested eco system apps nobody needs, like Microsoft or Google.

But i guess the managers know better than the users. Well they'll learn about that when everybody leaves.

Weird. It almost seems like not listening to your customer base, or your constituents, leads to collapse! Hooduhthunkit?!
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

They also said "AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off." so we need to hold them to that statement.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

gfdi. ive tried every other browser and ff wasnt great but it was the best left. also tried every search engine and theyre all shitty. i guess ill just quit the internet for good?????

I'm already out. My family uses Waterfox on Linux, Wimdows and Android. I'm going to experiment with some others.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

i heard that mozilla corporation is basically investment company for tech stuff, and most tech stuff these days is probably ai slop bull poo.

so maybe, mozilla does not go after what they are invested in, therefore they put this ai slop non-sense into mozilla products.

mozilla corporation is different than mozilla non-profit organization.

it feels like that mozilla is replacing alphabet inc's money with ai money and income.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

How to kneecap your own company in 1 easy step; embed a loathed product into your core business.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I'm curious whether a significant portion of their user base actually complained to them about this direction. I and my nerdy cohorts on Mastodon despise what they're doing, but did they hear it? Or are they blatantly ignoring their customers?

With that said I've been getting a huge "WE CAN'T BE LEFT BEHIND" smell of panic from Mozilla, so I'd bet they *did* hear complaints but feel as though excluding AI (or "not increasing its footprint") would be their death knell.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

what is a "modern AI browser"?

Isn't this like saying your car needs to be a avant-garde dining experience?

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

He's clearly an idiot. He will do untold harm to the Mozilla brand, again, like when they recruited an army of idiots to bother people who knew more than them and offer help they hadn't asked for.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I've no problem with the concept of an AI browser per se, but there are many ways to put such a thing into effect. I use Startpage for Search as it severs me & my data from the results it offers. I would want the same principle in an AI browser (or online AI Assistant for that matter): I share only what the specific instruction requires, & that is forgotten once completed. (This would need specific protocols & certification, which the EU might invoke, oh, in a quick 10 years or so.)
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

it does say it needs to succeed in the market, and that's where the userbase comes in: do not give them this success metric they crave, and they might realise the error of their ways.

#IronFox

vielleicht ist der #Ladybird Browser bald fertig.

#FireFox ist damit wohl Tod

As there seems to have been recent confusion about this, just a quick "official" toot to then pin: we haven't and won't support "generative AI" related stuff in LibreWolf. If you see some features like that (like Perplexity search recently, or the link preview feature now) it is solely because it "slipped through". As soon as we become aware of something like this / it gets reported to us, we will remove/disable it ASAP.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

It did finally inspire me to install #LibreWolf, so that's cool, I guess?

For macOS users, if you have brew installed already, it's just…

brew install --cask librewolf

But then you also need to do an xattr thing to de-quarantine it from the OS, plus a thing to allow extensions to use biometrics (if that's a thing you're doing).

The de-quarantine thing is:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/LibreWolf.app

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

We DO NOT WANT a modern AI browser. We DO NOT WANT AI. Why does no one get this?
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

maybe it's time for various Linux distributions to stop putting Firefox as default browser after installation...

I mean, good riddance.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I feel like a dinosaur sometimes but can any of you help define for me what problem an AI browser is attempting to solve?
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

K byeeeeeee. Thanks for the reminder. I don't need my browser broadcasting my interactions with webpages for...... reasons.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

ok well here's one response to this crap

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

FUD. Right in the guy's post - "AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off."
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Sad. Now it's not what we wanted and liked. Just another Google.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I hate this, i use librewolf, but I must say I understand the CEO : why would he care the userbase when it's less than 5% marketshare. He must be looking at other browsers users, those legions of llm daily users.

Wait and see, it would not survive anyway without an attempt, as long as clean forks exist.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

to turn #Firefox into an #AISlop Browser is the sure way to chase off all customers and users of #Firefox. This CEO should step down and be replaced by someone who understands Firefox' users.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Dear @mozilla, regarding this topic - where do you read feedback?

Just wondering where to send a well crafted message to suggest stuffing "AI browser" up your new CEO.

I don't see any problems with how Firefox implements AI yet, but the phrase ‘AI browser’ scares me

I am very disappointed with the focus on AI rather than significant improvements to the browser itself (I mean resource allocation)

blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/le…

Still, I don't see any problems with Mozilla's current(!!!) approach, and I'm also scared by emotional social media users

i moved away from firefox a year ago after 15 years of fidelity
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

It is not that they don’t understand. They understand very well.

They have been sabotaging Firefox deliberately for years, because they are corrupt : their money comes from Google. 😬

in reply to nixCraft 🐧

What a coincidence! This comes right before I evolve into a FORMER Firefox user!!
