Balmerino Abbey

Last Thursday, we drove up to and along the shores of the River Tay. Our main goal was a ruined abbey in the lovely village of Balmerino.

It was a gorgeous February day, cold but with bright sunshine and blue skies. The snowdrops were brightening the grass beneath the trees, the moon was rising, and the honey coloured stones of the old abbey spoke of history.

A colour photo of the gates at the entrance to the abbey. The black metalwork is aged but still strong, and the gate is missing. Beyond it is a stretch of dappled green grass with a set of steps leading to the start of the ruins. There are trees all around, and the sky is almost clear cyan with a half moon rising above the gateposts.

In the centre of the shot, in the middle of a cloudless blue sky, the gibbous moon is hanging as if magically supported by the old tree.
A colour photo of part of the abbey ruins. Broken grey stone forms a window arch and, beyond it, more arched windows and a buttress form another wall of the open room. Inside are large wildflowers, brown and lifeless. On the outer wall of the abbey, ivy has grown and thickened on either side of the window as a living frame.
