Shear Joy

You might have heard of wind shear, but have you ever seen it?

#Iceland is one of the windiest places I've ever been, particularly on the south coast where this shot was taken. The clouds are clearly showing an abrupt change in wind direction with altitude, commonly known as "vertical wind shear".

This was not a day for driving around safely!

A cloudy landscape with a distant jagged hill on the horizon. The turbulent sky is woolly and overcast, with a thick layer of opaque cloud at the top of the photo. Near the centre, above the hills, the cloud is streaky shades of grey. This area is showing a distinct zigzag pattern, the lines of cloud switching from travelling towards the left of the photo to abruptly changing to head for the right side. The effect appears as a kinked sharp angle of roughly 90 degrees.
