You get a good collection of these bots, if you follow certain hashtags ...

Thanks for the heads-up on this happening. I am not surprised as it has been an annoyance for us mods for a while.
in reply to hannah aubry

I’m seeing exactly none of this stuff.

My mods are amazing 😍

Whoo, I think it’s been constant for the last two years or so 🙂

In my experience #Block comes down on these accounts like a ton of bricks. Getting the word out obviously helps, then the fediverse can, and will, clean up our own streets. Appealing to civic pride here, hoping we're up for the task. @iftas

Lovely.

Note that these campaigns don't just disseminate pro-Russian content; they also thrive on spreading anti-western, anti-democratic, and generally divisive content.

If someone's stirring the pot, try to figure out what their angle is.

How are we going with mod tools? Specifically tools that help mods?
in reply to hannah aubry

My general rule is to block anything with Telegram links. That's a red flag on its own.
in reply to hannah aubry

This is as good a time as any to say (again) that my moderators - @moderators - are amaaaaazing and fedi is lucky to have them.
in reply to hannah aubry

(1) There is alot more under attack than your fedi.
(2) Some of them do seem to be Russian, but most of the usual suspects are not Russian, and are extremely active.

lotsa Nazis in Poland. How did that happen?

What is this Broomfield operation, and why does Digital Ocean have an office there? USG would not give up any documents on the Level3/NSA deal, though they claimed they closed down the project before Snowden

yeah sure.

Thanks for the heads up!
Russia is waging war against factual information.

⚠️ SW-ISAC Advisory

A pro-Russian propaganda network, possibly related to the Portal Kombat network, is active on numerous ActivityPub services.

We are directly contacting affected services, but all admins should check for the accounts listed below, likely created after September 8.

Based on 166 BlueSky accounts identified and shared to us by Antibot4Navalny:

Common usernames:
indiereports

Good this problem got your attention. I seen in past whole instances dedicated to spreading kremlin propaganda. Some did it in "open mode'", other apply "satire" sauce, and some already gone. Sadly I can't recall instance domains, as these were old posts with whole lists of domains.

Also watch out for Tankies because anti west means everyone else is right. They tend to uncritically spreqd this.
in reply to hannah aubry

Had I not read this toot, I would have completely missed this.
So thank you to all the hardworking mods out there.
in reply to hannah aubry

Here are a couple newly-created bots in the network. Interestingly they are not spamming telegram channels. Instead pravda.ru

grayzone@hessen.social
independence@hear-me.social

blog.isabel-drost.de/spam-spam… ... Are there plans to make sharing activities like these among moderators easier? Do moderators have an easy way to inspect the connections of accounts to spot spammy patterns (connections here meaning who re shares, follows, replies, replies only to influential accounts, re shares only what gets lots of replies/ engagement)?
in reply to MaineC

another question I cannot quite wrap my head around: should news outlet be strongly encouraged to run their own instances? (For me, the domain would increase trust. It would also enable them to moderate comments on their publications.)
in reply to MaineC

@mainec they should, and some are already doing it! Check News & Media in this search: jaz.co.uk/projects/orgs-using-…

Additionally, @newsmast is helping news publishers reimagine local journalism married to ethical social networking: goodcommons.world/casestudies/…

@mainec
There's the IFTAS Library, and a number of mdoerator/admin communities that collaborate e.g. about.iftas.org/library/techni…
