My latest for WIRED: The Mastodon features Elon Musk should steal but won't because he hates you

wired.com/story/mastodon-featu…

Posting this here tonight for you all. Will post on Twitter tomorrow. We'll see if I have a Twitter account still on Tuesday. #TwitterMigration #MastodonMigration

are you seeing lots of verified government accounts?

I did not do the hidden rel=me because I would undoubtedly need to get legals opinion plus official sign off for that. Which I am not sure I even want to do as it would blur the line between ‘personal opinion’ (which is allowed) versus official representation (definitely not allowed without plenty of oversight).

I’d rather a code to my email or call to my phone to verify.

in reply to legraLeGra

@atthenius Those kind of blurred lines were also tricky on Twitter! These are tough questions we'll have to work out over time.
in reply to Justin Pot

Don’t think even for a second that he will not steal ideas from Mastodon, of course he will. The only quality he has apart from Narcissistic disorder, is stealing ideas from others, as he did from the begining of his career with paypal, Tesla and the rest. But even if he does, Twitter won’t become the square that you wish for. #TwitterIsDone
in reply to Wise Cat

These particular ideas, though, wouldn't serve his aims.
in reply to Justin Pot

The town square metaphor is just spot on. My own inner vision of that is the Union Square in New York City. Occasionally such a vibrant and diverse place to be — and sometimes a little deserted but always with room for everyone. At least my experience.

had to edit "until recently" into the article days before publication. I'm committed to accuracy.

Yeah I'm honestly ready to be done over there.
in reply to Justin Pot

"Actual Support For Third-Party Clients"

This is the real one, though isn't it? Everything else is just window dressing.

I'm both pleased and surprised how little trouble having the ability to edit has caused. I use it a great deal. I'm confused why none of the phone aps seem to support it. But tagging old posts? Love it.

I do wish there was a history of edits. And posts getting deleted will NEVER feel like a feature to me. It's a threat. I hate it. I'm trying to work around it.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

I saw that the developers who made TweetBot are working on a Mac Mastodon client and I'm honestly so so so excited.

Pretty sure that Twitter is going under. The only question is whether Elon will eat crow and sell it for pennies on the dollar to a rational actor, or accept the loss and move on. My recent posts detail why this is so.
in reply to Tea time.

I mean...AOL still exists. It takes a long time for a company to fully die. But I think it's the beginning of the end of Twitter being the center of online conversation.
in reply to Justin Pot

thank you for this article! This is great for new users like me.

I'm glad it's helpful! I also write a getting started guide: wired.com/story/how-to-get-sta…

hopefully he doesn't join
in reply to Justin Pot

Justin, the good news is that apparently Musk walked back the whole thing of "can't talk about competing services". He apologized and said he would do a poll next time. Well, you shouldn't need a poll to tell you it's a stupid policy to not let people talk about other services. lol
in reply to neutrino78x

ohhhh, that’s what he was referring to with that tweet. It’s sometimes very confusing to follow what he’s tweeting about sometimes.
in reply to The Zan 🏳️‍🌈🇸🇪

I know, I didn't figure it out until later either. He needs to be more clear about what's going on...major changes like that should be announced beforehand, that way you can get your twitter account in compliance, or lock it and step away from the platform 😀
in reply to neutrino78x

In the middle of his tantrums, Musk can’t see beyond his anger. Did he also suspend the rightwing fringe for linking their Parler & truth social accts?
in reply to Justin Pot

Great break down explaining how Mastodon works for those of us who understand layman's terms (no offense meant), it's a compliment. So many times I read articles that are a bit over my head when it comes to technology. Thank you
in reply to Lisa

I really do try to explain things in a way where anyone can understand! I'm really glad it worked in this instance.
in reply to Justin Pot

twitter only locked my account. Not suspended or banned. I tried to get suspended on purpose. I even posted that in my tweets.

Alas, I will try again in a few days.

in reply to Justin Pot

Minor typo in article. It should be rel=me not ref=me. Good article

I enjoyed reading your article, well-done! I disagree with you in one area, I like having tweets, blog posts, or what have you archived. You can blame it on the historian/archaeologist/librarian/archivist in me. I love the edit feature at Mastodon. It makes things easier.
in reply to Phx611

I understand why some people like having an archive! I just want to have the choice.
in reply to Justin Pot

Thanks for that! It’s tough to adjust to a new platform.. hearing about a few features worth getting excited about helps!
in reply to Justin Pot

just learned from @viticci that I can follow a Pixelfed account here as well - if I can replace my Instagram at at the same time this is gold!

Content warnings are great. Some will call them woke nonsense but certain topics and people are triggering. I love that they’re being used thoughtfully by users here.
in reply to Justin Pot

love this. Well written and highlighted a few features I didn’t know about yet!
in reply to Jeff D

I'm so glad people are enjoying the article and learning from it
in reply to Justin Pot

very I pressed at how quickly you amassed a following here!!!!
in reply to tymwalker

I'm just humbled so many people are interested in what I have to say! Hopefully they don't get too mad about my shitposting

the best part about hanging out with Canadians is the hockey chatter
in reply to Andy

I live in Oregon where the sport barely exists and I miss it
in reply to Justin Pot

that’s wild.. I’m the lone #Isles fan living in northern VT, which is like living on the inside of the #Bruins #Habs rivalry. Very rarely do I get comments on my Long Island paraphernalia.
in reply to Andy

Yeah out here if you see someone else in any kind of hockey gear you're excited even if it's a rival team. At least you can talk about hockey!
in reply to Justin Pot

I had no idea he took a photo of his laptop screen with his phone. The man is just not smart.
in reply to Matilda

He deleted the tweet pretty quickly but it for sure happened.
in reply to Justin Pot

I wouldn't care either except shadowbanned users still count as active users when it comes to the shareholders and investors reports.

At that point just leave so you count as another loss.

"I want somewhere to sip my beer and chat with friends, ideally with as few Nazis around as possible" 💯
in reply to Reed Mideke

I like beer and dislike Nazis and I don't care who knows it
in reply to Justin Pot

Immediately sent the paragraph about the Leafs to my wife so that she’d understand that it’s not just me.
in reply to Justin Pot

can Twitter even last long enough to put these features on the roadmap (assuming they still have one of those)
in reply to Justin Pot

WOW what an amazing work of art! You were so on point in every area. I will share!

I look forward to being an active part of the future of the #Mastodon community growth as I make more friends and Followers on here each day!

Hockey
I was enjoying this until I saw that you're a Leafs fan!😩
in reply to Michael

Hockey
i'd change this about myself if i could but i apparently enjoy suffering too much to stop
in reply to Justin Pot

Hockey
having grown up in Chicago I can feel your pain. I had to endure the "Dollar" Bill Wirtz years with the Blackhawks.
in reply to Justin Pot

It’s useful to mention that most of us, not unlike yourself, assume that Musk wants anything other than an avenue of expression that caters to the right wing simp, and diminishes or preferably excludes all other voices.

He has no interest in improving the platform by any metric that any of the rest of us would recognize.

Failing to recognize this actually feeds the beast.

in reply to News Detective

all i've ever wanted my entire life is a trophy that says "angriest listicle"
in reply to Justin Pot

All great ideas. What I'd really like to see Musk, or whoever is running twitter next week, work on is turning twitter into one giant interoperable Mastodon server
in reply to Justin Pot

You forgot the most important feature, Musk won't copy: Federation
in reply to Justin Pot

Hahaha haha! 😆

This article has made me very happy! You definitely get this place and I love that for you!

Ah... I'm still laughing. :D

> Mastodon, meanwhile, has a system that allows for quick verification without any overhead. Basically, if you link to your Mastodon account with the tag “rel=me” on your website, Mastodon will highlight that you control the site on your profile.

WHAT!? I'M TOTALLY TELLING MY STUDENTS ABOUT THIS WHEN WE TALK META-TAGS TODAY!!

in reply to Justin Pot

LOL, I hope so!

Part of the point of today's class is that I want the students to learn how to make a web-portfolio from scratch in HTML/CSS/JVS. I needed to talk about how Meta tags can give you some inter-site interaction, and I'd love an excuse to plug Mastodon with a Mastodon-exclusive feature!

in reply to Justin Pot

Maybe I'll be happy enough with the YouTube mirror to repost it here... :V

unfortunately many actual town squares move in a slightly different direction, where there is no free bit left, and you can only have a drink with friends in one of the designated bars. Chatting without consumption is no longer allowed.

It's not exactly what Musk is doing, but it's also not completely unlike gentrification.
