in reply to stux⚡

There are at least three showstopper reasons now, in the order in which they manifested themselves, any one of which would be sufficient to keep me away on its own:

(1) the guns
(2) the plague [on the plane to get there]
(3) the nazis who are now running the place

in reply to Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@TimWardCam, hey don't forget the cavity search and electronic device ransacking when you land there. Which were the reasons I've never considered going there even before the current nazi leadership // @stux
in reply to Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@TimWardCam
Nailed it.

As a military brat I never thought it would get this bad.
The past 30 years have been a nightmare of hope and shear terror.

Looking at retirement outside of the US at this point and urging others to stay away.

in reply to stux⚡

I much rather throw a tamper tantrum at the vatican again.
in reply to stux⚡

was invited to a wedding there this year, I didn't go.

Sorry cousin 😔

in reply to stux⚡

I’d not want to go there for the best part of last 20 years, to be honest. Expensive, obnoxious and starting to look like a 3rd world country in most of its parts.

I still believe there are absolutely beautiful natural wonders in there but… Nah, thanks!🫣

in reply to stux⚡

I've already turned down three conference invites from the US this year. I don't intend to return while the nazis are in office.
in reply to stux⚡

I’m an American, been living in europe for over 20 years. I will not be visiting my country in its current state.
in reply to stux⚡

I sort of got invited to go to something in the US but I'm choosing not to go
in reply to stux⚡

I wasn't ever going to visit the US since cheney was VP.

I'm not a terrorist, I just don't like dirty Dicks.

I met a bunch of US tourists on a trip to Scotland. They were very adamant that we should visit the US. I politely said that I'd like to but maybe when it's more stable politically. Wife was not as polite and told them that we'll think about going when they stop making stupid decisions :welp:
in reply to stux⚡

I had family visit there for a vacation recently and I was shocked at their willingness to go.
in reply to stux⚡

No, and I live here.

Here in the US we do another kind of calculation. I don't travel to red States, for example.

I put Florida and Texas on my "no fly" list after 2000.

As an American, I tell folks to avoid the US. If they must travel here, I tell them to leave their personal devices (phones, computers, etc) at home and purchase temporary replacements upon arrival, while visiting, which they will get rid of before leaving (don't cross the border with any devices).

Can't be scrutinized for secretly criticizing this government if they have no devices to scan.

in reply to stux⚡

Work wanted me to visit a US client on-site. I refused to go. They understood.
in reply to stux⚡

I half-heartedly liked the idea of doing a big ol' RV trip around the US if I ever had the money for it, but all the cool stuff to see is absolutely not worth it at this point.
in reply to stux⚡

CBP treats me like a fucking criminal on entry every single time. Avoiding the US like the plague that it is.
in reply to stux⚡

I wish this provided explicit options for people outside or inside the U.S. so we could see how that breaks down
in reply to stux⚡

I live here and I wouldn’t . In fact I urge people to avoid the US- help wreck the tourism economy and all that benefit from it. THAT’S how you fight this 🐂 💩!
in reply to stux⚡

If I ever leave the USA, I'm not coming back, to visit or anything. There's nothing here, but the billionaire's boiler room of hell.
in reply to stux⚡

I feel like I should quantify my answer by saying I'm a white straight male.
And I said No, mostly because:

  1. I'm not giving anyone my phone to dig through.
  2. I assume some cop will shoot me or something.
in reply to stux⚡

Every time we see somewhere beautiful in the US, my husband and I look at each other sadly because our criteria for visiting another country is a basic confidence in that country's justice system.
in reply to stux⚡

No thank youm

If #ICE seen my mastodon profile, they would put me to #Guantanamo or better straight to alligator #alcatraz.

in reply to stux⚡

i wouldn't have visited the US before because ot it's gun laws... it doesn't feel safe if everyone could just shoot you
in reply to stux⚡

Yes, I would. But there are many other countries that are higher up my list. Generally, I feel very happy here in Europe.
in reply to stux⚡

if I could get out, I wouldn't come back under this regime or its ideals, possibly ever.

It's always been "guilty until proven innocent" for some, but if you were the right color, had the right accent, wore right clothing, and knew what to say and how to say it, you never had to acknowledge it or worry about it.

I admit that my unexamined privilege hobbled me for years. It took far too long for me to understand the depths of the hatred and superiority at the core of our government. I—wrongly—believed anyone could speak up and be heard if they did it the right way.

That was never true. It was a comfortable lie that most of us could believe.

Do not come here.

It's not safe for anyone except oligarchs. Think of us as a wannabe Russia.

in reply to stux⚡

I view visiting US similarily to Russia.

Both have places I would love to visit, but neither country is safe for foreign trans people to visit.

So no, not visiting the US any time soon. ._.

in reply to stux⚡

Emphatically no. I’m an American. Visiting the USA right now exposes you to serious, and completely unnecessary risks.
in reply to stux⚡

I looked for the option to vote, "Hell, no!", "You gotta be kidding!", or "You can't make me!". In lieu of those options, I chose the most similar option.
in reply to stux⚡

I'm an American living overseas. I can't go back anymore because my passport has gender X and therefore isn't valid anymore. Even were I to get a new passport with a M/F gender, I'm not sure I'd be safe to enter anymore.
in reply to stux⚡

I have fled to Mexico. I hope one day to return home, but not until it's safe for me (trans).
in reply to stux⚡

The United States is hosting portions of the World Baseball Classic and World Cup tournaments next year. I would not be surprised if some of the national teams refused to participate.
in reply to stux⚡

If I were to leave I don't think I'd ever want to come back. I would want to see family I'd leave behind, but I don't feel good about this place anymore. The regime would have to change, and through a massive social awakening and not just playing along with the script set up by the P25 people. Otherwise I'd actually have this constant fear they'd be coming to get me someday...so fuck ever going back.

It''s been tempting me of late. I could probably pull it off.

I don't know. Maybe.

in reply to stux⚡

American citizen here, and no way I would come here under the present administration. A plurality of American voters chose chaos, cruelty, and authoritarianism.
in reply to stux⚡

Born and raised in the US but recently moved to the UK. Went back in August to move some stuff; went in through DFW... Absolutely crawling with ICE armed to the teeth and spoiling for a fight. Especially if you are even a pale tan colour, just don't do it. You will be stopped, best case just hassled for a few hours. I don't want to think about worst case.
in reply to stux⚡

If I could leave the United States of America today, I would. I would not encourage anyone to come here at the moment or in the foreseeable future.

@Pinchy63 I don't blame you. To be fair, I don't think the American /people/ feel that way about Canada. The current administration and its cult are obnoxious/dangerous/lawless but before MAGA I don't think I ever heard an unkind word about Canada or her people. To the degree things Canadian were a topic of conversation it was usually about Canadian politeness and the pronounciation of "about". :-)

I hope the rift between the US and Canada (and everyone else MAGA has pissed off) can be healed in time and with intentional effort on our part.

in reply to stux⚡

I haven't been to the US (and have avoided US products as much as possible) since 2003 (illegal invasion of Iraq).

I said at the time that I wouldn't change my stance until the US pulled its head out of its ass.

So, yeah, I haven't changed my stance.

in reply to stux⚡

No.

TBH, it's been many years since I would have contemplated going there for fun, but I have been on a few business trips over the years.

If my employer were to ask me to go there now I would politely refuse.

in reply to stux⚡

I would visit because I have family still there, and worry about them.
in reply to stux⚡

Since Greoge W Bush and the ingreasing data collection my desire to visit the United States declined step by step.
Nowadays it's dangerous because everyone could vanish in a deportation prison.
in reply to stux⚡

One of my beloved daughters lives in the Pacific Northwest, of course I'll visit her
in reply to stux⚡

No.

I think I could be held in custody and expelled just because of my political beliefs.

And I fear being held in custody much more than being expelled.

During my first and only visit to the US, I did a 3000 mile road trip with a friend, and mostly for landscape and wildlife photography.
It was a profound, amazing experience. And even then, I'm not seeing myself returning any time soon.
in reply to stux⚡

i'd prefer to invade it and install a puppet regime

What's good for the goose....

in reply to stux⚡

I'm American, and I'm not crossing state borders right now.
in reply to stux⚡

As an American, I would despite all the risks of I had family here. Otherwise, no.
in reply to stux⚡

not if I have to travel by air. Otherwise, the US is pretty huge; it's a mistake to consider it so monolithically.

I live in the US and there are parts of the country that I have no interest in visiting, but others that are pretty amazing and are largely unaffected by political BS

in reply to stux⚡

FWIW, the train station in London i commute to for work has a large video hoarding running adverts for travel to USA. “America the beautiful” is the line, I think. I’ve not noticed these before. It’s made me wonder if their is some desperation
in reply to stux⚡

I would actually love to visit the US again, but with Canadian citizens arbitrarily detailed by ICE for weeks at a time It's actually a safety issue.
in reply to stux⚡

Nope! This was why I supported the @BlueJays.com as they are the only Canadian #baseball team. Which I got into thanks to #StarTrek
in reply to stux⚡

I have friends outside the US and I have insisted they do not visit! It's far too dangerous
in reply to stux⚡

You forgot in your poll

o Hm?

o You kidding me?

o Dare ask me that again!

o In your dreams, buddy!

o You fell on your head?

in reply to stux⚡

It is not worth the hassle. Besides possible CBP issues, missing connecting flights will cost you money these days thanks to the FAA staffing problems.
in reply to stux⚡

(I am a natural born US citizen)

Nope. I would counsel you to postpone. Or attend events virtually.

I don't think the USA is the most dangerous country to visit even now, but it's not good, and I do think things will get better within five years.

So if you don't absolutely need to be here now, I'd steer clear. Canada and Mexico have a lot to offer. Consider going to one of them!

in reply to stux⚡

I have done so a couple month ago, will be doing it again at the end of this month.
in reply to stux⚡

I voted 'no', it may be 'no unless' but I can't think of conditions under which I would right now.

I would most definitely not take my teenage daughter there though.

I would not visit the US for the rest of the 21st century because of its current state.
in reply to stux⚡

I wouldn't even have visited the US in the past. All I have ever seen or heard about the US in the media didn't strike me as a particularly nice place to be. Gun ownership, violence, poverty, no welfare state to speak of, everything insanely large... I have never left the European continent, so all I know is second hand, but the picture of the USA that I see is one of utter madness. It's much worse now, but it has never been good in the first place.
in reply to stux⚡

if i was born somewhere else, there’s no way i would visit nazi america
in reply to stux⚡

I had to tell my employer that I cannot visit the US in its current state without running a high risk of (at best) rejection at the border or (at worst) incarceration/abduction
in reply to stux⚡

I'm not even looking forward to a trip I have completely within the US next week. Lots of staffing shortages at airports due to the government shutdown
in reply to stux⚡

Yeah, don't visit us until we get this all figured out* 30-40% of us are way too ****ing gullible and untrustworthy #DangerSign
in reply to stux⚡

though my "no" is not something new. The decision was made during my first and last visit, which took place in 2012 😉
in reply to stux⚡

born and raised in the US, definitely would not visit these days. If I had the time (73 yo) and $$, I’d leave.
in reply to stux⚡

I probably would go through hell trying to get back in if I left too.
in reply to stux⚡

in its current state, I think the only reason why I might even consider visiting the US is to visit some good friend/s who lives there and spend time together in real life. But at this point it sounds a lot safer for the travel to be the opposite way haha.
in reply to stux⚡

I've been to a lot of places that were easier for me to enter than it sometimes is trying to get back into the US even as a citizen. There's certainly still a lot here that I think is worth a visit, but I'd seriously consider alternatives at the moment.
in reply to stux⚡

I'll go if work pays me to, but there's no way I'll go as a tourist
in reply to stux⚡

@mariaclarkson No. Border crossings are not safe now, with our current "policing".
in reply to stux⚡

Canadian here. I have not crossed the border since Trump was elected the first time..
...and the gun violence...!

in reply to stux⚡

No. And we have family there who we were supposed to be visiting this Christmas.

But a) I have published academic work critical of the regime and b) I've got a non gender conforming 13 year old with neither fear nor filter.

So, no - I don't think it's safe for my family to visit.

I would not only visit the US in the current state but would love to be a US citizen if the opportunity comes because sooner or later things are gonna change.

You folks have no idea how bad the majority of countries are when it comes to the standard of living and human rights.

Fediverse can be an echo chamber.

Per #GuardTheLeaf and others, it alas *is* the people, in their millions.

It's not just the government shouting at Canadians to fuck off back where they came from. It's not just the government blaming #Canada for supposedly instigating this. Or trying to deflect onto the exchange rate. Or #FlagJacking.

It's ordinary people, at sporting events, on the roads, and on the news.

A mere change of government won't fix this.

I wholeheartedly can say I wouldn't want to visit the United States for all the money in the world right now. And I used to love to travel there for holiday 😢
in reply to stux⚡

Hell no! Absolutely not a f…leeting chance.
Even “before” the us wasn‘t exactly one of my favourite destinations…
in reply to stux⚡

Not anymore. I was there once, quite some years ago and I liked it. But so much has changed. And even back then I was unsettled by things like the "No firearms beyond this point" signs on bar doors. Or the immigration officer who brought the young Indian man right in front of me in the line to tears and who opened the conversation with "What brings you to MY country?"
in reply to stux⚡

It‘s not just a theoretical thing for me. I‘ve been coming to the US almost every year for the past 20+ years. I won‘t come until it is safe* for me (business) or my wife (private travel/vacation) again.
in reply to stux⚡

I've said for a long time now, I won't visit the US unless they manage to go for 24 months without a mass shooting.

Aint gonna happen.

in reply to Dgar

You've seen what they've been doing to immigrants around here, and it's the shootings you're worried about? 😕

Don't visit the US.

Please stay away so you don't come to possible harm here.
And you should spend you time and money in countries that don't cause harm and chaos in the world.

If I were given 100 million € to visit United States, I would say: "I'd rather prefer to be given 100 € to visit Sudan or Afghanistan, which are way safer than the US".

I’ve been a visitor to the US for decades, and was employed by The IRC on 42 & Lex for a while as well. Loads of US mates. Absolutely no chance I will visit again any time soon for all the obvious reasons - and I’ve actively helped marginalised people leave. Also for obvious reasons. Absolute tragedy.
in reply to stux⚡

@energisch_

My friend from Bolivia took the plane from Frankfurt to La Paz just because he did not want a stop in the US. That should be reason enough for others, that are no migrants, to boycot the US! Show your solidarity! Feel the fear of people chased by Trump!

late for the vote, but also I'm a "no." Don't bring your body or your money here.
