Welcome to all the Twitter refugees! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Mastodon and the Fediverse does NOT use NFTs or blockchain or cryptocurrencies. No one is on here trying to get rich, no one is promoting anything.

The Fediverse (which Mastodon is part of) is a federated computer network spread across thousands of independently owned and operated servers. The millions of people on the Fedi can interact with each other regardless of which server they signed up on, because the servers talk to each other through federation.

Federation is a proven and stable way to make a network, it's how telephones and email work for example. It's how social networks should be.

We aren't trying to break anything or compete with anyone. There are no shareholders or venture capitalists. Instead, we work together, donating time or money, and collaborate to make a better social network for its own sake.

Here are some hints and tips for new users:

Might need clarification there. Some instances do promote them, I understand.

Are Twitter users leaving in masse?
in reply to Moat

I meant that the platform itself doesn't promote anything related to cryptocurrencies. There's no technical connection between the Fediverse's software and blockchains etc.

Twitter has started integrating NFTs into their platform, which is apparently why a lot of people are leaving it.

Most of us aren't (trying to get rich or to promote anything) but you can't nor shouldn't speak for everyone.

Actually, though it's not my main activity here, I DO try to promote respect for truth and ability to argument one's positions when I have an occasion to do so.

I meant the software running on the Fediverse doesn't promote anything related to NFTs or cryptocurrencies.

Twitter has started integrating NFTs into its software, which is why some people are now leaving Twitter.

The Fediverse is not doing this, that's all I was trying to say. Sorry, I should have been clearer!

can you not use words like "refugees" to discuss people who leave a social media platform? it's rather off-putting and disrespectful. thank you
in reply to limber elf

yeah I would agree the use of this word is pretty ick in this context
in reply to Liaizon Wakest

Wasn't intending any disrespect, where I live it's used as a neutral word meaning anyone who feels forced to leave from one place to another.

But if it has different connotations elsewhere I will try to be more careful about using it in future. Thank you for the heads up ๐Ÿ‘

Gotten a few to add to the blocklist just from reading the replies to this post.

Well I think you're doing a perfectly fine job providing Fediverse Tips, and if others disagree then they're free to jolly well do it themselves.

I'm also a Twitter refugee and loving Mastodon!

I've made this tool to get screenshots from the toots, check it out:

Thank you! Good luck with your friends, hope to see them on here soon ๐Ÿคž

If it helps, Mastodon did a good animation explaining themselves a few years ago, it applies to the Fediverse in general too:
