Wow, I am afraid that definition is somewhat problematic. The term "fediverse" was in use when #GNUSocial with #OStatus was in wide use, way before Mastodon and other ActivityPub-based platforms

I have seen the term "fedivese" in use even when StatusNet was around. Sure, you can launch a project or a foundation focused on a particular protocol. But users of these platforms coined the term, and history does matter!
