arXiv is in the process of migrating "all" its services off Cornell University servers to Google Cloud. I'm concerned about what implications this could have for its long term independence and fitness for mission info.arxiv.org/hiring/index.ht…

Given its archiving purpose, I hope the data itself is stored redundantly in at least two different countries on hardware that is controlled by different companies (themselves under different jurisdictions)

@monnier My understanding is that papers (as opposed to any datasets) are well within "bored hobbyist with a moderate disposable income" reach

Or to put it another way, that you can fit it all on one HDD

@monnier Mirroring absolutely needs to be actively supported of course, and is extremely unlikely to cost anywhere near as much as fending off AI scraper bots
