wow... Do you know how difficult this is to do for people not in IT? They'll have no clue 'how to'... people like you should come up with a guide of some kind so they at least stand a chance to even start to comprehend and do something about it... I guarantee you no on know what the alternatives to Microsoft are... hell they're everywhere!!😱

You're right, of course. For my part i have worked in computers for decades, so i have a lot of skill in this area, but i also learned to distrust these companies decades ago and never let myself become dependent on them in the first place, so it's been easy for me to avoid them. At the same time, i don't know that i could give anyone good advice on how to move away from the big corps for the very that very reason - i have never really used them in the first place, so i don't really have any clue how other people make use of things like Google and Facebook, so how could i possibly give advice on switching to something else? I don't really know what needs they fill for people or how people use them.

i need to think on this.

πŸ‘ I don't blame you.... but 99% of people are going to be downright incapable of doing it themselves ...πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

@VeroniqueB99 My suggestion is that we reach out to people in our lives and communities and offer direct assistance. Friends, family folk, neighbors, co-workers. Make it known you are willing to help. Organize and lead classes or workshops at your local library. Organize a "Security and Privacy in Computing Working Group" lol just spitballing the name there... but, you know, meetup twice a month as a kind of ongoing workshop.

This is why I never trust ANY cloud platform with my critical data. The jurisdiction cannot be trusted -- FISA court, NSLs, the lack of privacy or data protection laws, and just general corporate greed make ANY American company untrustworthy, as well as any other company that relies on US-based back-end cloud services... Which is pretty much all of them.

@JustinDerrick I encrypt everything locally before posting it to online storage. Photos, docs, folders, everything. I have never trusted the bastards, and E2E encryption is only as good as the security of the corporations who own the server.

Unfortunately a new bill is working though parliament which would make data here in Canada vulnerable too. It looks like maybe part of the logic is that selling us out to the US on data privacy hidden in a law that's supposed to be about border security might be used to get a better deal on trade that can be claimed as a victory to the public. if so I doubt it would work and I don't think it would be worth it even if it did.
