Pardon my ignorance, please but what is friendica? I've not heard of it before.
in reply to harrys_balzac

Sorta like Facebook, but federated with activitypub, so it can interact with mastodon and Lemmy a bit.

This blog post does a better job of explaining it.

Ahhh. I might take a closer look at it then. Sounds like it could be fun.

Friendica is very, very, very good. It's just that most people aren't looking for something that looks like pre-IPO Facebook for some reason.

Personally, I think they should be, but nobody ever listens to me.

Friendica, together with Diaspora, is a founding father/mother of today's Fediverse. 14 years ago it was still called β€˜one Network’ or β€˜The Federation’.

It supports various protocols and can therefore connect different networks. You can integrate any other services via an add-on system. Since Lemmy and Friendica support groups, we can natively join the threads and play along with them as if we were on Lemmy ourselves

in reply to Matthias

@Matthias @ProdigalFrog @harrys_balzac I love #friendica, it connects to all the protocols.. Just seems the level of polish/design/marketing of #mastodon stole the show...let that be a lesson to devs everywhere, design matters ;)

BTW not sure how many people know #raccoon the android app on #fdroid, it's an amazing friendica app!

Although, it can't only be me that notices that #friendica requires a fairly fast #network connection to #work smoothly.

It's fine now I upgraded to GB #Broadband, but when I was still on copper, the lag was noticeable .

Outside that, I agree it has a lot to offer.

I'll try #raccoon though. I haven't really tried mobile apps for #friendica

@marqle
Friendica does not pre-save very many things. It fetches many things at runtime. This places different demands on such a system.

@marqle @lps @feb , @ProdigalFrog @harrys_balzac I still have a couple of #Friendica accounts, & historically had a few others. For me, all the functional advantages Friendica has over other software, including Mastodon, are largely negated by its comparatively hideous lethargy. It is commonplace that sending posts can take several minutes to complete, & even on the best days it can take 30 - 60 seconds, vs nearly instantaneous on my Masto instances. Similarly, incoming posts often lag badly behind what i see in my Masto instances [on bad days by hours]. Given the large majority of my friends & regular interlocutors are on Masto instances, having ~real-time chats with them is nearly impossible in F, but elementary in M. It's such a pity.

@lps

I've always loved #Friendica, but I had never found an app that worked well with it.

I'm trying #Raccoon now. Perhaps I'll begin to use Friendica more again.

Thanks for sharing that information.

@ProdigalFrog @harrys_balzac I totally agree with this, I have a feeling more people coming from #facebook would greatly prefer #friendica ...marketing is everything. That and a polished mobile app ... And cross platform:)

Awe man I thought this might be a public service where they provide emotional support racoons.....
in reply to The Pirate Post

I don't know if it's from the same developer, but I still have the Racoon for Lemmy app. It was sad to see them give up, I hope someone archived jthe community and the APKs. It was a good Lemmy app.
in reply to P4ulin_Kbana

It got revived also! They're back on F-droid as well, not sure about it being the same developer as this though since I don't use friendica
