Another day, another Mastodon drama-trauma. These are coming in thick and fast now. Several per day even.

From a couple of perspectives the absolutely best thing would be if every user ran their own single-user instance. Obviously that wouldn’t be feasible ”now”, or even in the short term, so I mean more from a theoretical holistic point of view.

However, to properly utilize the benefits of federation and to avoid the ”block everyone” frenzy that is spreading like wildfire, and which comes with lots of collateral damage in the shape of innocent and confused regular users, it’d be great if everyone ruled their own little online presence, to do with as they liked.

This half-centralization of huge Fediverse instances leads to nothing good. Admins with God complexes, a handful of users that can destroy the community for 10’s of thousands of users etc, all point to flaws, not strengths.
Is it just a coincidence that many Mastodon users are Twatter ship-jumpers?

it’d be great if everyone ruled their own little online presence, to do with as they liked.

If only there were a way.....
you know, there is a middle way: smaller instances mean higher lowest common denominator and educating users in their own abilities to block, mute, and style their feed by following the right people.
I completely agree with you.

My worry is, probably not unlike yours, that there is this drive to become the next “MastoMusk" ruler and decider what to do and what to allow. And that requires power and influence and control over the hard- and software.

So i fear there is a drive towards bigger, rather than individualisation.
