Kinda not false but I think there's nothing wrong with "hand waving away". It's the more explicit version of what the hands are doing in this particular version of waving. Hands can wave to indicate many things. So I think "hand waving away" is fine and legit, and "hand waving" is the more compressed version.

No problem... I've found folks whose first language is US English often don’t use it as, like, y'know good like non-native speakers 🙂

ah thanks wouldn't have noticed. I'm not a native english speaker and didn't make the image so I just assumed it was correct but then they also wrote "didatic" xD

The first time I heard "hand waving" I wasn't aware of the phrase, so it wasn't until I had heard it again in another context where I knew what kind of waving the hands were doing. So I love "hand waving away" personally. Clear and vivid.
