Bluesky has just started officially hosting and verifying dozens of accounts from Trump's regime including the Whitehouse, Homeland Security / ICE, the Department of War etc (cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog…).

*All* of these accounts are spreading bigotry, hatred and dangerous lies about vulnerable groups.

It is NOT enough to just "block and forget", here's why: social.chinwag.org/@FediThing/…

This is a 1930s moment, and #Bluesky is choosing to host vile hatred. It is going down the same path as Twitter/X.

The US government has launched about 30 accounts on BlueSky and is using all of them to troll.

But I thought it would be better *this* time! How could this have happened?!

Fedi.Tips 🎄

@Walrus

First port of call would be to ask your admin to defederate bsky.brid.gy

If they won't do this, you can at least block your own account from seeing it by finding an account from it such as @bsky.app@bsky.brid.gy, then going to its profile and clicking ⋯, then "Block domain" or "Block bsky.brid.gy".

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

It is going down the same path as Twitter/X.

Totally predictable. I really wonder who's surprised.

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

It's very sad how a social network with potential is, literally, becoming Twitter 2.0.

At this point, it seems they want to get away the unexpected audience that they've got, so that they could go on with their plans of implementing blockchain and similar things to it.

Because they know that they can't profit from that audience, so they have to get it away from there and implement their crypto stuff.

And that's pretty darn f**ked.

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

I for one am shocked that a platform whose management were handpicked from the crypto world by the person who made twitter a horrible experience to be on, is heading down the same path.

@milan What's your stance on this? Do we federate? Just asking if I shall block myself.
in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

I share your sentiments about this administration. Words can't overstate how much damage they've done and will continue to do... but what was it you think Bluesky was supposed to do here?
in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

It's called freedom of speech. Nobody is forced to follow these accounts. I certainly won't. Let's not mix technology (hosting, federation) with ideology.

"Nobody is forced to follow these accounts"

You are totally missing the point, here is an explanation why: social.chinwag.org/@FediThing/…

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

We all told so many of our friends that went to blue sky, that this is what would happen to it, and it would happen after they established roots there and make it harder for them to leave. The entire purpose was to make it harder for Democrats to aggregate..

When people ask: "Why did the Germans not rise up against Hitler when he started to abuse his power?" Well, this is exactly the question Bluesky should be asked right now.

People that jumped from X to BS are going to learn that they jumped from the Frying Pan to the Fire.
in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

probably also a sign of how bad X has gotten that they felt the need to. Despite owning a platform orders of magnitude bigger they aren't getting the reach they wanted. This is a sign that we can in fact fight back by leaving
in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

not surprised...it is made for money just the saame as twixer, so it had to go this way eventually. Thats why I was so sceptical when people praised it as it was not made for money by the same people...

To quote CNN's Bill Maher on his latest editiorial on algorithm-based sites (don't forget, Bluesky is one of them):

"Ironically...the Bluesky Crowd hates me for calling them out on...their voluminous [BS]. They also will sometimes just print my critique of the left, because they want people to think I'm a conservative. You are f------ liars too."

Part-founded by a known sociopath (Dorsey). Taken over when said sociopath decided he wanted to support something even more sociopathic (nostr) by cryptobros.

What a surprise that it has gone down the fascist path.

Ich frage mich, warum Mastodon erlaubt per Schnittstelle Inhalte von Bsky hier reinzufuddeln.
in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

Not to defend bsky's cryptofash leadership, screw them, but I'd say give it 48hrs and those accounts will be talking to nobody but themselves.

"As if the biggest de facto instance mastodon dot social, currently federating with Meta, wouldn't host those same government accounts if approached."

If mastodon.social was hosting Trump & co, I would be calling for them to be defederated in exactly the same way.

Unlike Bluesky, the Fediverse is not under anyone's control, each server is truly independent in every sense. Servers can defederate mastodon.social (which is only about 20% of overall network), and many do that already.

Fedi.Tips 🎄

@MrRaptor @OhOkayKay

Once you have millions of people on a platform, there will always be a certain amount of people who can be radicalised by hateful lies.

And it's not just about the accounts themselves, it's about Bluesky being so happy to host them and verify them. There's no law compelling them to host far right politicians, but here they are doing so willingly. It implies that Bluesky is comfortable spreading these lies about vulnerable groups.

@OhOkayKay
Maybe am I too optimistic, but nobody will create a Bluesky account in order to follow this dictator.
And as there is no "trendy threads" algorithm to hijack, there won't be an X like echo chamber.

So will these accounts really have any impact?

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

@OhOkayKay
I understand.

Let's just hope that being more isolated than on X will limit the damage.

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

how do you unlink bridgesky? It allows you in even if you torched your bluesky account.
in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

p.s. You can stop Bluesky having any connections or interactions with your server by asking your server admin to defederate bsky.brid.gy

If you are a server admin and want help with how to defederate, there's a guide at fedi.tips/how-to-defederate-fe…

The Lady (La Donna) reshared this.

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

Isn’t defederation just ‘block and forget’ but on behalf of *everyone* on a server? Isn’t at least part of the *point* of Mastodon and other Fedi services that individuals get choice in what they want to see and interact with? I’m not saying that Bluesky has made good choices here, but what impact will this make other than stopping people interacting with ordinary Bluesky users via gateways? Or are you saying that everyone on Bluesky supports the current US regime (which is probably fair enough to say about Truth Social for example) and it is proactive protection of a server community from harassment? I’m genuinely curious as to why you’re promoting the nuclear option…
in reply to Stewart Tolhurst

@foxbasealpha

No, the idea of defederation is to prevent hateful lies spreading and radicalising people on your server. It happens, I've seen it IRL.

"Isn’t at least part of the *point* of Fedi services that individuals get choice in what they want to see and interact with?"

You have the choice of which server you join or move to, or you can even set up your own.

But it's up to the owner of each server who it federates with, because the owner is responsible for the content of their server.

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

This is an incredibly stupid thing to do on an instance of any serious scale. The entire purpose of the bridge is to enable (opt-in!) interoperability, and there are real people on the other side. Blocking an instance (or in this case bridge server) blindly is an incredibly bad idea because it breaks real connections that matter.

This affects all ATProtocol servers though, not just bsky.social. I'm sure there's a better solution than blocking a few hundred innocent servers just to get one bad one.
in reply to Luna Lactea

@jackemled

These aren't "servers" in any meaningful sense, they're just part of Bluesky corporation's centralised network which has control of who and what is banned or allowed.

AT Protocol only allows properly independent servers if they're running their own relay, which is very rare and much more difficult and expensive.

Blacksky apparently had to do a lot of work to break free from Bluesky, and even after that Bluesky was still able to delete a user from Blacksky.

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

No, a PDS is a server. It stands for "personal data server". It runs its own data store for its own users & interfaces with a relay server to allow others to access that data & see its users' posts. Bluesky does not have control over PDSs that aren't hosted by them. ATProtocol relays are pretty heavy compared to a PDS, but the point is so people can more easily run a PDS for themselves. Anyone can run a relay too if they have the hardware for it, & a few do exist & are not under control of bluesky. We shouldn't be taking moderation action against other PDSs & other relays that are actually well run, only bsky.social & its relay, since those are the problem here & not anyone else.

I haven't heard of Blacksky, but if bluesky could delete a user from it, then that user's account must have been on bsky.social & not Blacksky's PDS.

in reply to Luna Lactea

@jackemled

A PDS is nothing like a Fediverse server.

Fediverse servers are truly independent of each other and can communicate directly. No one controls a Fedi server except its owner.

PDSes cannot communicate with each other, they have to pass all their data through a relay and almost all PDSes are using Bluesky corporation's relay. So, PDSes are not independent the way Fediverse servers are.

"that user's account must have been on bsky.social"

No, it wasn't.

in reply to Luna Lactea

This is comparable to adding *.net to your blocklist just because threads.net is unmoderated. Blocking an entire TLD because of one server doesn't make much sense, does it? Neither does blocking an entire protocol just because of one unmoderated PDS & relay.

Block posts from bsky.social, not anyone else unless they're also misbehaving.

in reply to Luna Lactea

That's a ludicrous comparison, Bluesky is 99.9% running through Bluesky corporation's infrastructure. It is a de facto centralised platform controlled by a for-profit corporation that is owned by VC investors. Unless their structure and owners change, Bluesky are locked on the path to enshittification.

in reply to Fedi.Tips 🎄

I'm not defending bluesky. I think we should block bluesky. I also think we should not block the rest of the ATProtocol network though, because it has behaved well. I don't think you understand how ATProtocol works.

Looking at your post history, it seems like every time bluesky does literally anything you get butthurt about it, spread misinformation, & fail to understand ATProtocol. I can't tell if you're serious or trolling, but if you're serious, I think you should know that behavior like yours is why there aren't more people using fediverse. If you're trolling, please go outside & touch grass. I'm not going to continue this.
