Just like their previous AI update, it is technically opt-in (you have to configure an AI service before the features actually work), BUT there is no way to disable UI elements like the "Discuss selected books with AI" menu item. The official reply is to "simply ignore them." Why bake this AI shit directly into the program?? Why not let AI losers make their own shitty plugin if they need an algorithm to tell them what books to read next ffs
I really hate to be mean, I have debilitating social anxiety so I know it can be rough talking to other human beings
But please, for the love of god, don't discuss books or get recs from a fuckin AI. Talk to a librarian, a friend, a community center staffer, Redditors, Discords, the comments section of book blogs, #Bookstodon, strangers in a bookstore, literally anyone else. Please I beg of you, books are an incredible way to connect with others, don't rob yourself
@f0x @vivi Excellent point. If they wanted someone to recommend books, they could hire a literary consultant or a librarian or SOME kind of person who's well read and always looking for new stuff herself. But all those professions are "woke" and anyway Elon Musk or Joe Rogan or someone said that it was stupid to learn the humanities in college, that wasn't a "real degree" not like "STEM" (i.e. computer programming) so rather than hire an expert, they go with LLM trash. ~Chara
@vivi any decision by any software developer for any reason to embrace the #LLM fad, which is based on completely fraudulent premises and probably exists chiefly as a pretext for mass surveillance and data-scraping of literally everyone on the Internet, and above all which is not actually intelligent, is a bad decision. ~Chara
ok honestly if by fraudulent you mean like ai companiez r just scraping the entire web and effectively are using content that isnt theirs and that someone whos pet issue that topic is, id taking a principled stance by not using anything that supports that industry then youre kinda cooking that would be a morally consistent reason i think idk id have 2 think abt it more
