I would like to propose SOSS: Sponsored Open Source Software.

If your company uses OSS, you sponsor the project $100/year.

Not per seat, or per team, just $100/year, all in.

- 30 developers using Ghostty? $100
- 300,000 engineers using tmux? $100, total

You audit the OSS you use (OSS tools for this would quickly emerge, $100, thank you). You set up a bunch of annual $100 sponsorships. Everyone wins.

This guarantees the longevity of that tiny piece of code propping up your bank.

I'd worry that this would quickly devolve into "We need this feature that only applies to us and if you don't add it, to the exclusion of everything else, we'll withdraw funding."

As the maintainer of #PHPUnit and as a board member of @thephpf, but not only wearing those hats, funding of #OpenSource is a topic that sometimes keeps me awake at night.

Last time I was not able to sleep because I was thinking about this, I wrote phpunit.expert/articles/open-s….

I like the simplicity of your solution, but I fear that not enough companies will voluntarily pay for something that in their minds is free.
