If I were to buy a new laptop, where do I find one that is very well built and has most of the things on my list? Out of curiosity....
My list:
- fully metal, no plastic
- 17inch screen
- backlit keyboard
- very good CPU
- decent GPU (I prefer AMD)
- easy to take apart, change stuff, upgrade - if it takes me me more than 2 screws and 1 minute to replace the RAM or the Drive, it is not a good laptop
- FullHD screen (no less, no more)
- ok battery life, but I care more if I can easily replace it without any screws involved
- not super expensive
Not that I want to buy now, but maybe I'd like to in the future, and replace my plastic laptop that has a shitty Nvidia card (not working well on Linux).

Big thanks to those that still support TROM monthly https://www.tromsite.com/donate/ ! We will release a sequel to the TROM Documentary, in a few months time. Probably at the beginning of the next year. Follow my profile https://social.trom.tf/profile/tio if you want to get more updates about the work I do on it.A little change to the donation page, I have removed the "how much money we currently have" for 2 reasons: 1. Luckily we have enough for an entire year so I'd rather say something like that than how much money we have, and 2. For the past 6 or so months the bulk of those money did not come from TROM donations, fortunately or unfortunately.
So it was not a good way to showcase much of anything.
I am all for being transparent but now that I and Sasha make some money ourselves, outside of TROM, things have changed. For the better in terms of the ability to support ourselves, for the worse in terms of getting less and less financial support via TROM, which means the focus has been taken away from TROM in the past months, and towards trading to make some money.
So I hope that people will keep on supporting TROM!
Thank you again! #tromlive

I wish the twitter dissidents would know about the fediverse and not just "mastodon". Mastodon is 1 little piece of a huge network, the fediverse. There are plenty of platforms to choose from. I personally recommend Friendica. Our instance social.trom.tf has a custom made theme and is pretty much working 24h without issues. It can even connect with Twitter and you can post on Twitter too, follow people from Twitter, reply, get notifications when someone comments on your tweets, and so forth.
Also, it works with any Mastodon apps....
So it is a great option/alternative to have.
Therefore, the Fediverse is a network of multiple services. Some are social networks (friendica, pleroma, hubzilla, mastodon, etc.), some video platforms (peertube), some photo sharing (pixelfed). You choose the platform then the instance (server) where you can create an account. Then you are all set. You can connect with anyone from any network and server.
Done.
Welcome!

I was so impressed by that Fujitsu laptop that I convinced my parents to replace their shitty full-on plastic and hard-to-open and upgrade laptops with those Fujitsu ones. My father will have that 100 Euro model I was writing about. And my mother a similar model but with 8GB of RAM, 180 GB SSD and a core i5-4a. For 200 Euros. So almost double the power. In the same format. We should get it this week.
Basically my father's laptop has a core i3 processor with 2 cores and 4 threads. I upgraded it to 8GB of DDR3 (had 1 more stick at home). Plus used his SSD from the old laptop. All for 100 Euros, 1 year warranty, and a few spare parts from the old laptop. The laptop is half metal and seems quite solid. It is damn fast with TROMjaro and basically if you want to open tens and tens of tabs, watch any video file, listen to music, even do photo editing and some video editing, or play some old school games, this laptop is perfect. I mean my father basically visits some websites, listens to some music at times, watches some live TV, and plays Solitaire and the like. For him this laptop is fantastic. More than he needs.
My mother's laptop looks exactly the same (just a few color differences), but has 8GB of RAM and if I can upgrade I will to 12. I have some RAM sticks around from old laptops. Has an SSD, and core i5 with 2 cores and 4 threads. Better than the i3. On this laptop you can do all of the above and even play more recent and decent games, and for sure do video editing and all that. For her this is more than enough. All for 200 Euros plus 1 year warranty.
Overall, and so far, I love these laptops. Super easy to upgrade, fix, and clean. Took me some 10 minutes to access the Disk and RAMs from my father's old computer, but around 20 seconds for the new one. That's the difference. Not only they are easy to fix, repair, and upgrade or clean, but they are sturdy enough. Top lid and top part where the keyboard is are metal.
They are also very Linux friendly. Everything works out of the box. The screen is decent. No webcam tho. Perhaps that's better for privacy, they don't use webcams anyway.
Anyhow, I love these laptops for the package: good build quality, easy to deal with them, linux friendly, and cheap as hell. 300 Euros for 2 laptops + 1 year warranty is not at all bad,
your post made me curious, I never heard of anyone talking about Fujitsu laptops before, the repairability and Linux friendly aspect sounds great!
Unfortunately, they don't sell them in N. America:(

Am telling you they are quite good for such a low price. The lifebook E series one I recommend. Of course I buy them second hand not new. The battery so far lasts just 2-3 hours max. They are made in 2014.
But yeah, 100 Euros for such a laptop is really cheap.

A very bad laptop design.
3 days ago I was writing about a laptop I bought for 100 Euros that impressed me. How well it was design making it so easy to upgrade and repair. This post social.trom.tf/display/dbc8dc4…
Well now I have an exact opposite example. A few years ago we bought a very cheap laptop for my father. 2 core processor (intel), 4GB of RAM, some 500 GB HDD. 200 Euros or so. And the build quality is awful. Plus the way you open it up....
For example you have to open the entire back plastic panel to access anything. The screws are black on a black panel, the plastic quality is terrible, and then you have to somehow know that this:
is not just a rubber thingy to make your laptop stand better on a desk...no no, it hides screws inside of it. So you have to unglue that.
What a terrible design. I remember some 2 years ago when I first opened it up to change the HDD with an SSD, I almost broke the plastic panel trying to take it apart because I was unaware there are screws underneath those. Terrible design!
Then how do I put those rubber legs back? Glue them back? Awful!
After you struggle to open it, you find this:
It is easy to change the drive and the RAMs. However only 1 slot for the RAM. WTF! I've never seen a laptop with only 1 slot for the RAM. This is terrible. I had another RAM stick of 4GB around and wanted to upgrade it to 8GB but guess what, there is nowhere to add another stick...
Actually this was the reason I opened it again tonight, to only find out about this stupid thing.
The worst part is that the hinges are metal screwed into the plastic case and because it is so difficult to open, I broke both hinges....the plastic they were screwed into broke completely. And trust me I opened many laptops this never happened to me before. But this build quality is complete shit.
This happened 2 years ago when I first opened it. And made it so difficult when I reopened it again because I was afraid I will completely destroy it....I tried to glue them but in vain. Basically you can still close the lid, but it is a shitstorm and it will break completely sooner than later.
All in all, it is a complete fuckery this laptop. Poorly made out of shitty plastic. Difficult to open up to the point where you will break it. You only have 1 RAM slot. Not worth it.
I found a newer version of the same Fujitsu laptop, same model. Double the hardware power. Core i5, 8GB of RAM, 180 GB SSD. Same ebay seller. 200 Euros with 1 year warranty. I will tell my parents to perhaps buy that one. And this laptop we can sell for 16 Euros or give it to someone who won't be able to do much with it...
Will see but this is the exact opposite example of my previous one.

My plan for the next year.
My plan for the next year.
Release TROM II, have a wonderful TROM meeting in May, save as much money as possible + work to make some more and buy a motorhome. By October next year have the motorhome, some monthly income from WebApe (hopefully) and then go travel across Spain, Portugal, go to Norway see the Fjords and other parts of Europe :) . Basically see the nature side of it.
While doing that make more TROM books, more TROM-Casts, more videos, meet new orgs and projects, spread the word about "trade is the origin of most problems" and the antidote "trade-free".
If we manage to buy a motorhome and all works great with that, and if I manage to make WebApe a monthly income generator (or if we find other sources), then we can support ourselves and TROM for a long time. Maybe we can get enough financial support from donations for TROM...that'd be amazing but idk...
After that I'd like for us to go to Hawaii for a bit, because I'd love to see that place, then USA and buy a motorhome there (sell the old one) and travel across USA and see the national parks.
That's my "dream" now. And I am working on it.
Because you see, I want to have a wonderful life while also screaming about this bullshit society and propose realistic solutions for this BS. But I can't just scream and be angry, this won't even last. I want to also enjoy life, see the nature that is left, meet the humans that are still humans and not citizens, and so forth.
So let's see....for now I will get back to work on TROM II.
We had the wonderful @Aaron visiting us:
We had a paella - rare thing for us to eat out, maybe 4-5 times a year. But a paella we love :)
We had such a wonderful time together despite him only staying for just 3 nights.
Staying in nature, with the hammocks, having great discussions...wonderful!
Looking forward to meet him again in May!
Ok, now go finish TROM II :)

A better made laptop for 100 Euros
A relative of ours who does not have much money, had an old computer. Then she had no more. It went kaboom. We thought to do a good deed an buy a laptop for her. A cheap one. So I found one on ebay, for 100 Euros. Second hand. Yeah, 100 Euros. Fujitsu Lifebook E734 i3-4a. 4GB of RAM, 320GB HDD. Intel Graphics card. From 2014.
It is a bit scratched on the top lid, but other than that looks really good. Top lid made out of some metal, same as the top part where the keyboard is:
So I want to say a few things. First, the build aspect of it impressed me!
It is meant to be repaired and upgraded, at least mostly. From the bottom you can easily access the Drive, RAM, and the DVDroom (whoever still uses those). Just 1 screw holding them in place. So easy to deal with those.
The best part:
You can take the dust filter out, no screws needed, from the back of the laptop. In a second. Clean it, and put it back. This is the best feature (hardware) wise that I've seen for a laptop so far. I need to open up my entire laptop to clean it once a month, else it starts to overheat and does not work well at all. Imagine if I could simply take the filter out and clean! How in the world are not all laptops equipped with this!?
I love that thing so much!
Now, when it came, only had 1 issue. When the fan kicked in, it made a very loud noise and made the laptop vibrate....was quite bad. The best part is that I managed to open it up in a few minutes by unscrewing just some 10 screws. It was very easy to open this laptop up and that I loved. I quickly accessed the fan and cleaned it inside. I had to add some special oil to make it run smoothly. This is a very old fan so this may happen. That fixed it.
I of course nuked Windows and installed TROMjaro. Everything worked!
Bluetooth, wifi, keyboard keys, function keys....all! Runs so smooth and fast. The processor is more than enough for most uses for most people. The RAM is fine, depends how many websites you have opened in tabbed windows, but you can cheaply and easily upgrade that.
Overall for 100 Euros you can get a great laptop second hand. Well built, not that bulky at all, and useful for most people.
I also love how easily I could switch the TROMjaro layout into a Windows-like, something this person may be more familiar with. Lovely!
Point is, we should re-use. Second, I have seen several laptops over these past decade and this one is the best designed so far in terms of how easy they made it to repair and upgrade. All laptops should be like that. This is 8 years old but looks 20 years ahead in terms of the thinking that went into designing it for repair and upgrade.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I also got a 1 year warranty for this laptop. Not bad at all for 100 Euros.

The current state of TROM II documentary in terms of files used :)
The project itself, where most (not all) of the files reside is 1.9TB. The proxy clips for the documentary almost 1TB. Insane!
The documentary is already around 3 and a half hours long. But 2 or so more hours need to be made....I am running low on storage space. But will manage it somehow.
This must be the longest (biggest) video project ever made in @Kdenlive , right? :)
After I will release the documentary I will share it with the KDE team maybe they wanna showcase it as an example of how you can create a massive documentary all in Kdenlive. So far I love Kdenlive. It has been very stable for me.
These days I will take a bit of a break because I need to jump into a new section of the 3rd part and need to think about how to approach it. Also, @Aaron comes and visits for a few days and I want to spend some quality time with this wonderful being :) .
18 minutes from the 3rd part of the TROM II documentary, done! The work is faster than I first thought. I worked today a lot on color correction....I usually do not bother with these but I had to do it better for TROM II since when we filmed the interviews we did not do a great job at dealing with the lights and camera settings.... But now looks great in my view.
The next bit, how I approach it, will be defining for the rest of the 3rd part....so let's see.... #tromlive

I think most tech is bullshit. 4k screens, multi-camera phones, new gadgets. Bullshit. I have a 6 year old laptop, and an external monitor someone threw away. I have a 30 Euro 18 buttons mouse, from a non-brand, and a 20 Euro pair of headphones that are some 5 years old. All good. Am working on a multi hour documentary with these. My phone is 7 years old. My desk is made out of an old closet. My electric scooter is 8 years old. Not made out of an old closet!
Audio systems....bullshit. Microphones...mostly bullshit. Cameras, pretty bullshit.
What I mean is the difference between brands and prices is almost non-existent in terms of quality + what you do with them matters. The reason people are obsessed with these is because companies are great at selling illusions and useless features, plus blowing out of the water tiny miniscule differences to make them look important. Hard truth to swallow if you are a techy-guy/girl. But that's the truth.

They exaggerate claims...for instance they may advertise a 4k camera on a phone, and you may think it is the same as a professional (or normal) 4k camera. Not at all. My 2015 phone has a "4k camera". If I compare it with a normal camera that has proper 4k filming capabilities, it is....well...my phone one is complete shit. And I compared with new phone models too, same....
4k, 8k recordings are a scam for phones. Maybe for other cameras too. Also....you need a 4k screen to see a 4k video and take advantage of that. This is another BS. Most people don't have a 4k screen, let alone 8k one. And the difference in video quality is minimal.

Tech is one domain where this kind of BS is spreading, of selling very similar products every year or even month, for the sake of selling them, not because they are better. They invent a lot of bs features that are useless, and exaggerated claims about the "new features". This is ofc true for clothes, food, and pretty much everything.

> What I mean is the difference between brands and prices is almost non-existent in terms of quality
you had me in the first half not gonna lie, but this take is so wrong, everything else was okay, but brand vary WIDELY, both in quality and in value/price.
If you have ever worked with e.g. blender or had to compile large projects, it's also obvious that hardware matters, it can be the difference between days or minutes.
Yes they market it over the top. Yes, I'm on hardware mostly from 2012 and I have basically no need to upgrade anything, only repairs. No, a 750w power supply would not meet the needs of my system, I need one with 1500w, that's not an useless feature, that's how much power it can provide to my system.
Denying that there are objective measures of hardware quality really dilutes you message that I actually agree with somewhat.
Some brand are also more FOSS aligned than others, and choosing those might save you a lot of hassle down the line, and help you promote you and your friends self liberation from proprietary garbage.
> If say Mozilla calls their VPN as “free” as in “the source code is open and you can ‘fork’ it”, but they charge money for the service….it makes 0 sense. I can “fork” the code, ok, but can I use it with their VPN servers? No. Then what is the point of that!? Call the VPN client as “Public Source Code Software” that can be Edited/Shared/Copied or whatever “license” you want to attach to it. And call it a day.
tiotrom.com/2022/08/free-softw…
Free as in freedom dork, please consider being a bit more informed about the things you talk about. This is so fundamentally a part of FOSS.
Free Software Nonsense.
If you call a software “free” then you should not trade for it. It means, it is given to you without any conditions attached to it. You should not give your data to them, your attention (ads), your currency and so forth.TIO
There is no discussion, you're just not aware of the definition of free software.
gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.…
> “Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Thus, “free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.” We sometimes call it “libre software,” borrowing the French or Spanish word for “free” as in freedom, to show we do not mean the software is gratis.
> You may have paid money to get copies of a free program, or you may have obtained copies at no charge. But regardless of how you got your copies, you always have the freedom to copy and change the software, even to sell copies.
This is foundational knowledge.
Yes I know very well what "free-software" is. I am saying the word makes no sense anymore since if you have to pay for something, it is not free. Yet some say it is. You also took things out of context with the quote you posted from my original post about it. Read that post and the comments on that post.
The "Free-Software" "movement" is great, but also they bastardized the word "free" and that was abused by so many companies.
> I am saying the word makes no sense anymore since if you have to pay for something, it is not free.
as a left-libertarian I agree with the idea you're presenting... but that's really missing the point.
is it not free speech if it's published in a paid magazine?
maybe it's not freely available, and it would be great if it was, and personally I actually wanted a version of the AGPLv3 that was non commercial... but I fail to see how the free software foundation makes a mistake in using the definition of freedom that is most widely used.
Surely you could say that we should redefine “freedom”, but this just comes of as you wanting reality to conform to your opinion. Which is post factual in my book.
If you have ever worked with e.g. blender or had to compile large projects, it's also obvious that hardware matters, it can be the difference between days or minutes.
Of course a great GPU is better than a very low spec one. There are differences in hardware but mostly between high end and low end ones. The rest are kinda not that important and new graphic cards, new models, are hardly improvements over the previous ones. Tiny differences are sold as big differences.
AMD uses freesync which is an open standard, nvidia uses gsync which is a closed standard. That's an example of a brand being superior to another.
A samsung phone is practially impossible to root, a google pixel is recommended by graphene os.
Not even to mention that a pinephone is much more free than that still.
Brand matter.
> The difference between AMD and Nvidia can be seen as a difference in practice
> Both are companies tho, so both are badly incentivized in their own regards.
> So the "brand" does not really matter

People have traded for thousands of years. Sure, what you call as "fashion" may not have started with trade, but trade for sure promoted and abused the concept. You can call "fashion" anything and sell infinite stuff based on that. In this regards, "fashion" is a very harmful practice/notion.
Do you think that this false advertising is more common in tech than in other areas?
I do not know, but the amount of BS in advertising in general is astonishing. Actually advertising is all about selling you false or exaggerated claims.
how do you think it could be improved?
That's what I spent the last decade trying to figure out. The short answer is to move past a trade-based society, towards a sharing-society. So that people are not incentivized to promote false products and so forth. The long answer resides in this book I wrote "The Origin of Most Problems".
www-gem likes this.
It is true that one may be biased in sharing their own things (books, videos, projects, whatever) but when they sell these products (thus relying on an income that's generated via these products) the likelihood for them to lie, exaggerate, deceive and so forth, is far greater.
To put it simply, if I were to sell my book, and that money helps me pay my rent or buy food and so forth, then I will be more aggressive in "promoting" my book simply because I need to pay my rent and need food to eat. However, because I do not trade my book for anything, I am a lot less biased in sharing it with people. I have nothing to gain personally if you read it.
So yes, trade has a very bad influence and makes things a lot worse in this regards.
if you remove it, it's not like all the evil in the world will disappear with it, magically turning people into angels.
We should not exaggerate of course. But right now we can see that taking the trade away creates a lot more honest beings. We provide lots of examples in that book that I "advertised" :D - plus we have this directory here directory.trade-free.org/ full of examples like that.
So I think we have enough to prove that humans would behave a lot, lot better if they were not engaging into trading this for that.
Other incentives would fill the void
You assume there is a "void" that needs to be filled. But why should that be?
the desire for power
This perhaps goes hand in hand with trade-advantages. Kings, Musk, and others, have a lot of power and power trips, simply because they can take advantage of poor people who do as they say. If people were not so poor, and they had access to at least their needs as trade-free, likely they would be harder to manipulate, and thus grow this "power". In other words, a boss is powerful only when the employees need the job he/she offers and have no other alternative, else these people can leave, and the boss will have no more power over them.
Status, fame,
Are traded nowadays, this is why I'd argue they are a result of the same system of trade. Why people want to become famous? Likely because fame means money, thus access to the things you need/want. Also because celebrities are sold, traded, and thus they become popular (on tv, magazines, online) promoting that lifestyle. Again through trades (they pay people to do marketing and all that). Then people see it and want to become like them. Classic value influence.
mating opportunities, belonging to a group, etc.
Education is very important. You cannot have a different kind of society with people who are adapted to this one. No more than bringing someone from a tribe to live in NY.

A slave master has power over their slaves even greater than an employer over employees
These masters had power over slaves because they were supported by a system of trade, where authorities (paid by the state) would protect them. It is not like those white folks were so karate-kid that they could beat those black-guys into submission. It was because those white folks were supported by a system (police, military, guns) that forced those black-dudes to conform. So, the gathering of power is again exemplify through trades. Not all cases can be explained via trade, but most seem to be.
More to the point, slaves were/are needed because of....you guessed it: trade. To produce sugar, cotton, electronics, etc.. To then be traded to the rest of the world. And thus, the incentive to have slaves, comes from the incentive to trade en mass.
People seek status and fame because we have certain psychological needs.
How do you know that?
We need to feel competent and welcome, and fame gives us that.
Fame? Makes you feel competent and welcome? Maybe you understand something totally different by fame....but anyway, fame is a symbol promoted by trading agencies: magazines, movies, books, songs....of course people want that and flamethrowers. Whatever is promoted...
We need to feel in control of our lives, and status gives us that.
Free access to healthcare, food, shelter gives us that. Taking care of people gives us that. Fame makes you a prisoner in a prison you don't control. One made of followers, money, influence. No wonder most famous people end up druggies and have fucked up lives.
That was an example since it involved millions of slaves. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic…
Yes there have been slaves in the Roman empire and further down the line. Many, I would argue, supported by power that was gathered via trade or other abusive means. Like soldiers are paid or give certain advantages to then respect whatever the kind says they should do.
In any case, I am more curious about today's society where indeed slavery is a result of trade in most cases. I exemplify that greatly in the books I wrote here tromsite.com/books/
Psychological needs are known from psychology, sociology and anthropology.
I am unsure what you talk about, but these are soft sciences that heavily rely on oversimplification and interpretation. Anyway, what is not oversimplification and interpretation is that humans need food, shelter, healthcare, and care in general, for their bodies and mind to survive and thrive. How can we provide that for them? Well certainly not by throwing them into a trade-game frenzy where they are forced to trade even for their basic needs. This makes them crazy. We need to provide the basic needs for all humans, as trade-free. At least as a start-point.
Removing the need for trade will greatly improve our society overall. I am not just "pure guessing". I spent at least 15 years digging into this. I wrote over 30 books, made a 14 hours documentary and working on a 6h one now. Made many videos and so forth. Thousands of sources, plenty of examples. This is the main project that's all about this work tromsite.com/
From all of that, I can strongly argue that yes, trade is the source of most (not all) problems. That includes slavery, poorly made products, waste, struggle for power and so forth.
I have looked in depth at communism, socialism, technocracy, metabolism, the evolution of trade, money and more. Self sustainable communities, cases of abuse and slavery, corruption and so forth.
So I can say with confidence that my comments do not simply come out of "pure guessing".
To say there’s no difference is just sour grapes IMO. My $400 1440p IPS monitor with a wide color gamut and accurate colors is a much more pleasant experience than my basic 10-year-old 1080p one next to it. Same with the $200 mechanical keyboard vs a mushy rubber dome setup, and $350 headphones vs some $30 Amazon special.
It’s true that cheap tech can still be “fine”, but to say the expensive stuff isn’t actually better is just cope IMO.
Sure you can find some differences, but they are either shallow and hard to notice, or they would not reflect the price difference. I'd like to see a blind test of super cheap vs super expensive tech. May end up like the wine tests....even experts can't tell expensive vs cheap wine apart when blindfolded. At least not well at all.
Talking about monitors....look....I have a projector that is not nearly as "color correct" as my 1080p laptop monitor. Because it is a projector...cannot be as good as a monitor. However I love watching nature documentaries on my projector. Big and wonderful. These "color differences" make 0 difference. I work on my computer almost nonstop, and I worked on HD screens, Full HD ones too, and you forget about these when you work on them. And I do video editing a lot. The slight differences in colors and resolutions are really not important.
My phone has a 2k screen. I was testing with random people at one time, changing the res between FullHD, HD and 2k and asking them which one is....no one could tell on such a small screen.
I think these slight differences you talk about got tattooed into our brains by marketing and they made us believe they are more important than they really are.

I have a gaming PC at home, and for that there's a reason to update every few years since video cards do change. For anything else? Nope. A 10 decent year old laptop with a bit of ram and an ssd is basically going to run perfectly for most tasks.
And as for video, unless I'm specifically looking at something, 480p is just fine. Who needs that detail for most things?
I think that changes a lot for a lot of people. It's great that we can have more power, but we are unlikely to need it for anything. At that point, making stuff that lasts sounds like a better deal to me.

The problem IMO is that people don't like "good enough."
And this feeling for sure comes from the ads-industry. From youtube reviews, to TV ads, online articles, and so forth. Everyone screams at you to buy the new tech, because they say it is so much better....
I am doing documentaries/videos on a 17inch laptop + a 23inch (quite bad) external monitor. I do really fine with that. I edit 4k videos too. But when editing it is not advisable to edit the raw 4k for example - use proxy clips. Makes editing much faster.
So I personally do not understand the use of 4k screens for video editing. Also, since pretty much no one has a 4k screen, and on 20ish inches and lower screens seems to not even make any difference between that and fullhd, plus all online 4k videos are extra-compressed.... is it worth it?
I am again extremely skeptical about these practices. I suspect it is the ad-market that made people think these differences are important.
My mother used to play a computer game called Chicken Invaders, more than a decade ago, on some old windows computers. Actually those computers I found at the garbage bin in Spain when I came to spain...I was shocked you can find them like that....people would throw them away for no good reason. And I used to collect and build better ones with parts from one to another. IF I knew about linux back then.....I had not have installed windows...
Anyway, she really liked that game. It is a silly game but kinda addictive haha.
But it is only available for Windows. Well....I downloaded it and via Bottles guess what!? Worked out of the box. You see....a windows game working just fine in linux. That's why I love linux so much. You can find solutions even for these silly things.
So she now has TROMjaro and she can still play Chicken Invaders :D - if that makes her happy :) ....
Bottles is really cool, despite personally not having any use for it. But it is great for such cases. And they made it so much easier to use than Wine. By the way, really cool name....Bottles..."contained wine" :D

The worst bug in Thunderbird that I've seen in years: my opened tabs are replaced with random ones after a reboot. Imagine this: I save a lot of emails in tabs, and I can do that for weeks at a time, since I don't reboot my laptop (only when there is a kernel update). I want these emails. I need them. Then I reboot my computer and all of them are replaced with random emails....this is awful. Happened after that fancy Thunderbird update with the fancy new UI.
Reported it here bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.…

The amount of spam emails I get is astonishing. Daily. Lots. For several email addresses. The good thing is that Thunderbird's spam filter does a great great job. Filters some 99% of them. But damn, such a waste of energy and time....and most of them, almost all, are motivated by the need to trade: buy this, buy that, offers, newsletters, new products, reminders to use facebook, amazon, whatever....Awful!
This society pushes all humans into being dickheads. If only we could take care of each other and not be forced to trade this for that, in order to survive.... And we could....we have the knowledge, the tech, the resources....not the will tho, because I suspect most do not understand these problems and what we can do about them.

A few things I noticed now that I make a documentary and rely on footage from the world-wide-web:
- Vertical videos destroyed the video format. I find it difficult to find proper videos documenting, say, natural events. Or any kind of events. It is awful. Unusable mostly. Floods? Hurricanes? How the fuck can you tell the impact when you film vertically? No way.
- Internet searches suck! Google, DDG, SearX, Youtube, Twitter, you name it....they always push for non-relevant yet popular results, instead of relevant ones. Last night I was searching for the first United Nations Climate Change conference. I wanted footage from there. No way to find it on Youtube. It is the 1995: COP 1, Berlin, Germany. I searched for an hour. I finally came across, via other searches, to the Associated Press YTB channel and there I could find something....
- Important videos or content is very unpopular. I was looking at some of the important UN video announcements of years of work about climate change. They make them straight to the point....and have a few thousand views, or hundreds....
The internet is a bazar, I keep on saying that. You have to find your way through this mess, and since it is clustered around 5 or so big companies (farts) then everyone only gets to smell that kind of filthy Internet. I do not think most people do searches nowadays, about some weird, interesting things. Just use fb, youtube, and the like...let them manage your life...
Sucks...
But well, I created an alternative universe for myself via our TROM tools, via RSS, and the like.

LUT: Garuda KDE (unpolished) videos.trom.tf/w/j7NHs3RhoWd7p…
Garuda looks really great out of the box, but when you start using it you realize how inconsistent and unpolished it becomes. There is some work to do to make it stable, in my view. The theming is quite a disaster when you want to use other themes than Garuda's official one, and the out-of-the-box access to software via their software center, is very limited.
I feel like a lot of linux distros could learn something from such videos, constructive criticism and feedback is very important.
Also I kinda wish more linux youtubers would look into stuff like this instead of just showing the install process and such which barely changes in a distro. Show us the apps, how usable it is, try changing stuff and see how the distro handles things like theming, app availability is another very important aspect that most of these distro reviewers don't show.

They have not that good 17-inch options, but 16-inch are not that different from 17 and have expanded screen in a formfactor of 15,6-inch with full numpad keyboard, it's quite a good alternative too.
What I've noticed though that it might be a problematic to find a laptop with decent AMD GPU card, since the most manufacturers still prefer Intel+NVIDIA combinations. To be honest AMD is kinda resposible for that by themselves since they did not provide a relevant mobile GPU for years. There's Radeon RX 6000M series which looks very promising, but we should wait for a year or two before it will be adopted, I hope (it was released only last year). Thanks for those too!
