Carbon Capture, yet another "green washing" that won't help us at all - https://ytb.trom.tf/watch?v=nJslrTT-Yhc

When the trade based society we live in, makes us all want to trade like insane robots, then you can't fix anything unless you fix society. Period. And these "technological" solutions are a mere scapegoat for the best players of the game, who have no interest in changing the game. After all, they are having lots of fun.

So yeah....no, carbon capture is no more than a scam. #tromlive

If I were to buy a new laptop, where do I find one that is very well built and has most of the things on my list? Out of curiosity....

My list:
- fully metal, no plastic
- 17inch screen
- backlit keyboard
- very good CPU
- decent GPU (I prefer AMD)
- easy to take apart, change stuff, upgrade - if it takes me me more than 2 screws and 1 minute to replace the RAM or the Drive, it is not a good laptop
- FullHD screen (no less, no more)
- ok battery life, but I care more if I can easily replace it without any screws involved
- not super expensive

Not that I want to buy now, but maybe I'd like to in the future, and replace my plastic laptop that has a shitty Nvidia card (not working well on Linux).

framework meets all your specs except screen size frame.work i'm sure when you're ready to buy you'll find something online, perhaps even 2nd hand on eBay, craigslist, or offerup
in reply to Hobson Lane

Yes in terms of build quality framework is great, but no dedicated gpu + only available in usa/canada i think + they are so expensive...but yeah the idea is great.

I wish the twitter dissidents would know about the fediverse and not just "mastodon". Mastodon is 1 little piece of a huge network, the fediverse. There are plenty of platforms to choose from. I personally recommend Friendica. Our instance social.trom.tf has a custom made theme and is pretty much working 24h without issues. It can even connect with Twitter and you can post on Twitter too, follow people from Twitter, reply, get notifications when someone comments on your tweets, and so forth.

Also, it works with any Mastodon apps....

So it is a great option/alternative to have.

Therefore, the Fediverse is a network of multiple services. Some are social networks (friendica, pleroma, hubzilla, mastodon, etc.), some video platforms (peertube), some photo sharing (pixelfed). You choose the platform then the instance (server) where you can create an account. Then you are all set. You can connect with anyone from any network and server.

Done.

Welcome!

in reply to Tio

I forgot that Friendica actually allows users to connect with Twitter, I'm sure some people will find this very useful in the migration process.

You can get a Panasonic Toughbook also, they are unbeatable and designed for last for life. I have a CF-31 which is a damn brick, but there are some thinner models like this one --> ebay.com/itm/185627421074 or this --> ebay.com/itm/325369396127
in reply to Santiago

Oh wow yeah that Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2 looks like a tank. Kinda bulky tho but I never head of this one. Is really interesting

A very bad laptop design.

Hidden screws under the rubber padding? WTF?! Its definately one of the worst designs I've ever seen.

Fuck you Firefox with your promotional BS part of the browser updates...now they advertise even more aggressively their VPN and the "new" firefox view that puts another tab on all of my opened Firefox Windows, pinned, and does not allow me to close it like I close all other Firefox tabs. Only to remove from the toolbar...

I will eventually switch TROMjaro to use Librewolf, when I'll have more time....am tired of Firefox's BS.

A better made laptop for 100 Euros

in reply to Tio

Pretty cool. Also for a bit I thought they were saying “TROMjaro” to make fun of Manjaro, but no, that thing is real.
in reply to Outlander

Well that's the Manjaro spin we made and I am quite happy with it :) - lots of custom, different, unique things that we did there. Hope more will find about it :D
in reply to Tio

I forgot to mention that I also got a 1 year warranty for this laptop. Not bad at all for 100 Euros.

The current state of TROM II documentary in terms of files used :)

The project itself, where most (not all) of the files reside is 1.9TB. The proxy clips for the documentary almost 1TB. Insane!

The documentary is already around 3 and a half hours long. But 2 or so more hours need to be made....I am running low on storage space. But will manage it somehow.

This must be the longest (biggest) video project ever made in @Kdenlive , right? :)

After I will release the documentary I will share it with the KDE team maybe they wanna showcase it as an example of how you can create a massive documentary all in Kdenlive. So far I love Kdenlive. It has been very stable for me.

These days I will take a bit of a break because I need to jump into a new section of the 3rd part and need to think about how to approach it. Also, @Aaron comes and visits for a few days and I want to spend some quality time with this wonderful being :) .

18 minutes from the 3rd part of the TROM II documentary, done! The work is faster than I first thought. I worked today a lot on color correction....I usually do not bother with these but I had to do it better for TROM II since when we filmed the interviews we did not do a great job at dealing with the lights and camera settings.... But now looks great in my view.

The next bit, how I approach it, will be defining for the rest of the 3rd part....so let's see.... #tromlive

Hi Russia! So this guy needs to be poisoned and jailed because he wants to challenge the people in power? To expose their corrupted behaviors!?

Hi Saudi Arabia! So you had to kill this guy because he was criticizing your government?

Hi USA...and UK....so you had to inprison and abuse this guy for exposing your military abuse?

Hm....here I am listening to all of these tribes saying how they care about free speech and human rights and all that shit, while they do the opposite....funny ha!?
in reply to Tio

Yep. 99% of countries suck in some terrible way or another and should fix their own house before lecturing others.

I think most tech is bullshit. 4k screens, multi-camera phones, new gadgets. Bullshit. I have a 6 year old laptop, and an external monitor someone threw away. I have a 30 Euro 18 buttons mouse, from a non-brand, and a 20 Euro pair of headphones that are some 5 years old. All good. Am working on a multi hour documentary with these. My phone is 7 years old. My desk is made out of an old closet. My electric scooter is 8 years old. Not made out of an old closet!

Audio systems....bullshit. Microphones...mostly bullshit. Cameras, pretty bullshit.

What I mean is the difference between brands and prices is almost non-existent in terms of quality + what you do with them matters. The reason people are obsessed with these is because companies are great at selling illusions and useless features, plus blowing out of the water tiny miniscule differences to make them look important. Hard truth to swallow if you are a techy-guy/girl. But that's the truth.

in reply to MeLe

17inch screen, fullhd. Core i7-7700HQ, 32GB of RAM, 500GB SSD + 20TB HDDs in total. :) - and I max out everything considering I run over 30 websites, 5 servers, write lots of books, and work on a 6h documentary that uses at least 3TB of files :D

My mother used to play a computer game called Chicken Invaders, more than a decade ago, on some old windows computers. Actually those computers I found at the garbage bin in Spain when I came to spain...I was shocked you can find them like that....people would throw them away for no good reason. And I used to collect and build better ones with parts from one to another. IF I knew about linux back then.....I had not have installed windows...

Anyway, she really liked that game. It is a silly game but kinda addictive haha.

But it is only available for Windows. Well....I downloaded it and via Bottles guess what!? Worked out of the box. You see....a windows game working just fine in linux. That's why I love linux so much. You can find solutions even for these silly things.

So she now has TROMjaro and she can still play Chicken Invaders :D - if that makes her happy :) ....

Bottles is really cool, despite personally not having any use for it. But it is great for such cases. And they made it so much easier to use than Wine. By the way, really cool name....Bottles..."contained wine" :D

in reply to Haelwenn /элвэн/

Oh nice! Well the "chicken" one is for sure much better made....graphics and all that. I tried to find a FOSS replacement, and yours looks the best so far.
in reply to Tio

Yeah, I guess a graphics update to Chromium B.S.U. would be neat.

The worst bug in Thunderbird that I've seen in years: my opened tabs are replaced with random ones after a reboot. Imagine this: I save a lot of emails in tabs, and I can do that for weeks at a time, since I don't reboot my laptop (only when there is a kernel update). I want these emails. I need them. Then I reboot my computer and all of them are replaced with random emails....this is awful. Happened after that fancy Thunderbird update with the fancy new UI.

Reported it here bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.…

The amount of spam emails I get is astonishing. Daily. Lots. For several email addresses. The good thing is that Thunderbird's spam filter does a great great job. Filters some 99% of them. But damn, such a waste of energy and time....and most of them, almost all, are motivated by the need to trade: buy this, buy that, offers, newsletters, new products, reminders to use facebook, amazon, whatever....Awful!

This society pushes all humans into being dickheads. If only we could take care of each other and not be forced to trade this for that, in order to survive.... And we could....we have the knowledge, the tech, the resources....not the will tho, because I suspect most do not understand these problems and what we can do about them.

07:30 in the morning...worked like crazy on TROM 2 tonight. Very happy with the work I've done. These next few days I can have a clearer picture of where I am going with this 3rd part and perhaps how long it will be. #tromlive

I finished some 10 minutes from part 3 of TROM II. And these days I will finish more for sure. Super happy with the work so far. Managed to do it exactly how I had imagined. I personally really like it. I think I got better at editing with Kdenlive. Anyways, this is a long journey still....a lot of work ahead. But will do it! #tromlive

LUT: Garuda KDE (unpolished) videos.trom.tf/w/j7NHs3RhoWd7p…

Garuda looks really great out of the box, but when you start using it you realize how inconsistent and unpolished it becomes. There is some work to do to make it stable, in my view. The theming is quite a disaster when you want to use other themes than Garuda's official one, and the out-of-the-box access to software via their software center, is very limited.

in reply to Tio

I feel like a lot of linux distros could learn something from such videos, constructive criticism and feedback is very important.

Also I kinda wish more linux youtubers would look into stuff like this instead of just showing the install process and such which barely changes in a distro. Show us the apps, how usable it is, try changing stuff and see how the distro handles things like theming, app availability is another very important aspect that most of these distro reviewers don't show.

Rokosun reshared this.

in reply to Rokosun

Yeah most of these linux reviewers look at distros in a very shallow way.....
