Lebanon’s PM accuses Israel of rejecting a ceasefire after strikes on Beirut, Gaza
Lebanon’s prime minister accused Israel of rejecting a ceasefire after the Israeli military bombed the Hezbollah stronghold of south Beirut for the first time this week on Friday. At least 10 strikes hit the southern suburbs before dawn after the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings, with TV footage showing explosions and clouds of smoke.
“The raids left massive destruction in the targeted areas, as dozens of buildings were levelled to the ground, in addition to the outbreak of fires,” Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported, adding that strikes also targeted Aley, southeast of the capital, and Bint Jbeil in the country’s south.
The Israeli military said it continued operations against the Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and its Palestinian ally Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The strikes came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met US officials to discuss a possible deal to end the war in Lebanon, ahead of Tuesday’s US presidential election.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the “expansion” of Israel’s attacks, saying they signalled a refusal to engage in truce efforts.

Spain floods disaster: death toll rises to 205 as extra troops mobilised
The death toll from the floods in Spain this week has risen to 205, as residents in the Valencia region were warned to brace for more rain and an additional 1,000 soldiers were earmarked to help with the rescue operations.
Authorities in Valencia raised the death toll there to 202 on Friday afternoon, bringing the overall toll to at least 205 in have been was the deadliest floods in Spain’s modern history.
The regional government attempted to dissuade people from going to flood-hit regions. “We are deeply grateful for the help that is being provided to the affected populations,” it wrote on social media. “We ask that you please do not travel to these areas because the roads are collapsing and emergency services cannot access them.”

The regional right-wing government not only did not sound the alarm at time but also wrote on twitter (now deleted) that AEMET (the Spanish meteorological org) did not warn about the floods on time. People died because they went to work and to schools. Commerces were open. Fucking disgusting pigs.
The regional government can shut their trap in this matter, fuck them.
I think their confusion comes from OPs title.
Why is it "e-waste go brrrrrrr" when OP is presumably saying they're keeping this laptop out of the machine? _ machine go brr is a dumb meme in the first place, people using it the wrong way makes it even dumberer.
I just put one down as I walked away from the couch a few minutes ago. :)
I bought it to carry in my backpack in Europe. Super light. Super handy. And inexpensive enough that I did not worry too much of it being lost, broken, or stolen ( which it never was ).

My wife's 2019 16" MPB is running pretty great. Probably got another 5 years of life left in it. She uses it to watch YouTube and play Sims 4.
My 2016 Acer Aspire V3-372T is hanging in there running Debian. 60 FPS YouTube videos are getting to be too much for it anymore. I may have to put the old girl to rest one of these days.
But hey, it does play Minetest pretty flawlessly.
Is there anything that doesn't run linux lol?
How many hoops (if any) did you have to jump through to install?

It is more important what it can be upgraded to. RAM will be cheaper tomorrow ( historically ).
The problem is the non-upgradable trend in laptops. Ironically I have MacBooks from 2012 with 16 GB in them but much never ones that are stuck at 8.
I use an upgraded 2012 MacBook Pro with Fedora and it’s very easy to install.
You still have a few caveats if you wanna use some specific software like Ventoy or Clonezilla. Otherwise it’s really easy.
You have a lot of incredible Macs waiting to be grabbed for cheap after Apple discontinued support.
Before converting my girlfriend’s MacBook Pro to Linux, I never thought it would be possible. I don’t know why but I thought they were some special inaccessible computers.
It’s just a shame the latest ones aren’t upgradeable. Apparently the last easily upgradeable one was the 2012 MacBook and the 2019 MacPro..not sure though..
Yeah but since they aren’t upgradeable anymore, you’re often kind of limited by the 8gb of RAM they often come with.
It’s also difficult to know how much life an SSD still has in it even if one day I could be tempted by a second hand M Mac and Fedora Asahi..
Interesting to know, thanks.
I don’t remember if you can replace the battery though. That would also be big bet getting on of these used M Macs if that’s not the case..
You can also remove the glue yourself, there must be an iFixit tutorial on YouTube for it
I don’t know why but I thought they were some special inaccessible computers.
It's their marketing. Marketing, marketing, bullshit and marketing. Macs get viruses, Macs have vulnerabilities, Macs crash. Doesn't matter how much their indoctrinated fans might claim otherwise, Macs are just weird PCs. In that context, their refusal to allow their owners to control them is all the more jarring and makes owning the older models like you mentioned all the more sensible.
You can put an NVME ssd into a 2013-2017 MacBook Air or ‘13-‘15 Pro with a $15 adapter
RAM can’t be upgraded on any Mac laptop post 2012
It's an older Intel macbook, those are just like most Windows laptops.
If it was one of the newer macbook M's, it would've been quite difficult at least.
A: Would this end up as e-waste?
B: It's the end-users' fault if it does.
A: Okay, so...would this end up as e-waste?We don't literally know, because we can't predict the future, but we can be reasonably certain that old tech like this laptop would have become e-waste in the hands of your average user, regardless of whether they should have been expected to take the time to learn how to prevent that or not.
I have Batocera (Linux-based emulator platform) on a 2011 Mac Mini.
The only caveat is its weak integrated graphics chip that struggles to emulate fifth generation (PSX, N64, etc) and newer consoles, but since I pretty much only play 16 bit and older it's been a solid machine.
The MacBook air 2012 was already particularly bad in its lifetime, I remember doing it support for the company I was working for at the time and the air 2012 were only used for lightweight stuff but already so slow.
I envy you, because my 2019 MBPro has fans always spinning and it seems slow and bugged, especially with the latest macOS.
Maybe I should just try formatting, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle.
Picked up some 'busted' laptops from a mate's work clearout (they were decommissioning a building. I also got nine pine64's and two r202s, mate got a full rack cabinet lol)
One new nvme and one disk repair later and i have a pair of vaios
Depends - average would probably be about 2-3 hours? Not great but not awful for my use.
I could replace the battery and improve this - ifixit sell the kits - but currently I have no need.
I have 2016 MB Pro with EndeavourOS as well. I can't say I don't like it, but I tend to have quite poor luck with my installs. Each time I get to the customization stage, sth breaks a little. Probably should go pure Arch.
Nevertheless, on MacBooks up to 2014 it should be much easier and require less effort.
UN should consider suspending Israel over ‘genocide’ against Palestinians, says special rapporteur
The UN should consider suspending Israel as a member state due to its continuing “genocide” against the Palestinians, the divisive special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories has said.
She said no other country had defied so many UN resolutions for so long.
In her report, Albanese claimed: “Israel has pursued a pattern of conduct ‘deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction’.”
She is a divisive UN rapporteur, and was prevented from holding a briefing at the US Congress this week. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, described her in a tweet as unfit for office, adding: “The United Nations should not tolerate antisemitism from a UN-affiliated official hired to promote human rights.”

Lemmy Development Update 2024-11-01
Here is our regular update that explains what we have been working on for the past two weeks. This should allow average users to keep up with development, without reading Github comments or knowing how to program.
We also apologize for all the downtime on lemmy.ml recently, but thanks to @Nutomic and @phiresky, we've narrowed down the issue, and have a fix for it.
This was a blocker for the 0.19.6 release, so that should be ready to go soon, with 0.20.0 not long after.

Ah yes, the North Korean soldiers who are somehow overrunning Ukraine’s lines, yet are simultaneously malnourished, surrendering en masse before they even arrived to the region, and using cardboard weapons. Ah but also they like it better on the front than back home.
Don’t mind the literal thousands of Western soldiers who are in Ukraine’s foreign legions, or the literal thousands of Western non-Israeli citizens “serving” in the IDF committing genocide.

About 8,000 North Korean soldiers are stationed in Russia on the border with Ukraine, the US secretary of state has said, warning that Moscow is preparing to deploy those troops into combat “in the coming days”.Antony Blinken said the US believed that North Korea had sent 10,000 troops to Russia in total, deploying them first to training bases in the far east before sending the vast majority to the Kursk region on the border with Ukraine.
Blinken told a press conference that the North Korean troops had received Russian training in “artillery, UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles], basic infantry operations, including trench clearing, indicating that they fully intend to use these forces in frontline operations”.

And zero evidence, every time, beside some obscure videos of Asian looking men taken out of context. They just really don't want to discuss about what is going on the frontlines, like with Selydove. Especially when there is an US election going. What a stupid red herring.

Some setup notes for self-hosting a Lemmy instance
Hey; I just got a Lemmy instance up and running. I'd like to share some tips and things that helped me along the way.
I used the Ansible installer found here. Just following the instructions is pretty clear if you've ever set up a server before. I did have a couple of hickups though:
- In the hosts config file, there's a like that says "myuser@example.com: replace with the destination you use to connect to your server via ssh."" There's a typo down below where there is no myuser@example.com, it actually says example.com instead. Do replace it with your username and domain.
- The customPostgresql.conf DOES need to be tuned for your server memory and CPU; the default did not work for me
- When it says Configure a DNS A Record to point at your server's IP address. it means you need an IPv4 address for your server. Unfortunately, this means you can't use the cheapest Vultr tier at $2.5/mo, but you have to use the $3.5/mo instance at least.
- I used the $5/mo Vultr instance instead of $3.5 because 512MiB of RAM caused my server to run out of memory and start killing processes. For some reason nginx would be the first to go.
- Speaking of nginx; it was not configured to start on startup for some reason. A quick sudo systemctl enable nginx fixed that.
- To diagnose the memory issue; I had to go docker ps | grep postgres, get the hash/ID for postgres, then do sudo docker logs 5115641fc0b2 to see the logs
- To see the server logs, the /srv/lemmy/<domain name here> is where the docker-compose.yml file is, so if you cd into this dir, only then can you run docker compose logs -f lemmy or docker compose logs -f lemmy lemmy-ui pictrs to see the lemmy logs
- Sometimes, pressing a button in the config menu doesn't do anything. Generally, it's a backend issue and not a frontend one, but the front-end does not tell you that anything has gone wrong. If you "Inspect" and open up the console in your browser, you'll see the server request done and you can see the response.
- I was surprised to learn that you can't make a federated AND private Lemmy instance. I guess it makes sense? I kind of want to save on server bandwidth/resourse by being the only user though...
Anyways, hope these notes help someone! If you've got any tips I'd love to hear.
