Understanding the Fediverse: How ActivityPub is Reshaping Social Media

In recent years, a new term has been gaining attention in discussions about alternative social networks: the Fediverse. But what exactly is it? How does the underlying protocol ActivityPub work—and which platforms are part of it?

What is the Fediverse?

The word Fediverse is a combination of federation and universe. It refers to a network of independent servers (called instances) that can communicate with each other.

Unlike traditional social networks like Facebook or X (Twitter), which are centrally controlled, the Fediverse is decentralized:

Anyone can run their own server
Each instance has its own rules and moderation
Users can interact across different servers

The result is an open ecosystem instead of a single platform.

The Core: How ActivityPub Works

ActivityPub is an open standard (developed by the W3C) that defines how servers in the Fediverse communicate with each other.

At its core, ActivityPub is built around two main concepts:

1. Actors

Every user, group, or even bot is considered an actor.

2. Activities

Everything that happens is described as an activity:

Creating a post → Create
Following someone → Follow
Liking content → Like

A Simple Example

Imagine you are on Server A and follow someone on Server B:

You click “Follow”

New posts are automatically delivered to Server A

All of this happens via HTTP and JSON—similar to modern web APIs.

The Inbox & Outbox Model

ActivityPub uses a clear communication structure:

Outbox: Where a user sends activities
Inbox: Where a user receives activities

Each server manages these and distributes content to other servers.

Was ist das Fediverse?

Das Wort „Fediverse“ setzt sich aus Federation (Föderation) und Universe zusammen. Gemeint ist ein Netzwerk aus vielen unabhängigen Servern (Instanzen), die miteinander kommunizieren können.

Im Gegensatz zu klassischen sozialen Netzwerken wie Facebook oder X (Twitter), die zentral betrieben werden, ist das Fediverse dezentral organisiert:

Jeder kann einen eigenen Server betreiben

Das Herzstück: Wie ActivityPub funktioniert

Federated (Micro)-Blogging: Alternatives for Twitter/X

Executive Summary

Background

As scientists, we typically publish long and complex articles in specialized journals. However, to promote our work within our community and to the general public, and to grow our networks, microblogging platforms are invaluable. Twitter/X, once a popular platform, has become highly politicized, commercialized, and sometimes toxic. Additionally, its management can lead to unpredictable effects, including censorship and exclusion of members who do not align with published or obscure guidelines. This has led me to explore alternatives. Frequently mentioned platforms include Bluesky and Mastodon. Mastodon is part of a family of social platforms that can interact with each other, known as the Fediverse. In my research, Mastodon stands out due to its open nature, which also allows for the self-hosting of communities. A key characteristic of federated platforms is that users can export and migrate their data to different instances, including self-hosted ones. Bluesky, unfortunately, has some design defects and, despite a large and growing user base, is less future-proof and community-friendly. I also discovered Lemmy for discussion groups, which I plan to explore further. Therefore, I will now actively use my two Mastodon accounts— mstdn.science/@LabABI_Winkler (Laboratory) and mstdn.social/@robert_winkler (private)—for microblogging. For longer blogs, I use a self-hosted WriteFreely, which is also federated (<@robert-winkler@writefreely.nube-gran.de>).

Platform Overview

Twitter/X

Twitter/X (x.com/) is the most well-known microblogging platform but suffers from centralization, proprietary algorithms, and high monetization through ads and data selling. Privacy is low, and censorship is moderate but platform-controlled. The community is large but mixed, with toxicity issues. It does not support federation or self-hosting.

Bluesky

Bluesky (bsky.app/) is a newer platform built on the AT Protocol. It is not federated and does not support self-hosting. Its algorithm is centralized and opaque, and privacy is moderate. Monetization risk is possible, and the FOSS ecosystem is partial. Language support is English-heavy. Censorship and moderation are moderate and platform-controlled. Outreach is growing, and the community is expanding.

Mastodon

Mastodon (joinmastodon.org/) is a federated platform based on ActivityPub, allowing self-hosting and full data export. It offers instance-based algorithm control and high privacy. Monetization risk is low and community-driven. The FOSS ecosystem is strong, and language support is multilingual. Censorship is low and instance-controlled, and moderation is high and community-led. Outreach is moderate and instance-dependent, with a strong community.

Lemmy

Lemmy (join-lemmy.org/) is another federated platform based on ActivityPub, designed for discussion groups. It supports self-hosting and full data export, with instance-based algorithm control and high privacy. Monetization risk is low, and the FOSS ecosystem is strong. Language support is multilingual. Censorship and moderation are low and community-led. Outreach is moderate and niche, with a strong community.

WriteFreely

WriteFreely (writefreely.org/) is a federated platform focused on long-form blogging with minimalist styling. It supports self-hosting and full data export, with instance-based control and high privacy. Monetization is optional and donation-based. The FOSS ecosystem is strong, and language support is multilingual. Censorship and moderation are low and community-led. Outreach is low due to its niche focus, but the community is strong.

#ActivityPub support in #Madblog

I am glad to announce that Madblog has now officially joined the #Fediverse family.

If you want to test it out, search for this URL on your Fediverse client.

Madblog has already supported #Webmentions for the past couple of weeks, allowing your blog posts to be mentioned by other sites with Webmentions support (WordPress, Lemmy, HackerNews…) and get those mentions directly rendered on your page.

It now adds ActivityPub support too, using #Pubby, another little Python library that I’ve put together myself (just like Webmentions) as a mean to quickly plug ActivityPub support to any Python Web app.

Webmentions and Pubby follow similar principles and implement a similar API, and you can easily use them to add federation support to your existing Web applications - a single bind_webmentions or bind_activitypub call to your existing Flask/FastAPI/Tornado application should suffice for most of the cases.

Madblog may have now become the easiest way to publish a federated blog - and perhaps the only way that doesn’t require a database, everything is based on plain Markdown files.

If you have a registered domain and a certificate, then hosting your federated blog is now just a matter of:

Federation support is also at a quite advanced state compared to e.g. #WriteFreely. It currently supports:

• Interactions rendered on the articles: if you like, boost, quote or reply to an article, all interactions are rendered directly at the bottom of the article (interactions with WriteFreely through federated accounts were kind of lost in the void instead)
• Guestbook support (optional): mentions to the federated Madblog handle that are not in response to articles are now rendered on a separate /guestbook route
• Email notifications: all interactions can have email notifications
• Support for quotes, also on Mastodon
• Support for mentions, just drop a @joe@example.com in your Markdown file and Joe will get a notification
• Support for hashtag federation
• Support for split-domain configurations, you can host your blog on blog.example.com but have a Fediverse handle like @blog@example.com. Search by direct post URL on Mastodon will work with both cases
• Support for custom profile fields, all rendered on Mastodon, with verification support
• Support for moderation, either through blocklist or allowlist, with support for rules on handles/usernames, URLs, domains or regular expressions
• A partial (but comprehensive for the provided features) implementation of the Mastodon API

Ich habe es geschafft! In 24 Tagen habe ich 24 Texte der Kategorie #ScienceFiction #Microfiction verfasst. Nur zwei Mal habe ich geschwächelt und den Text erst am nächsten Tag veröffentlicht. Das Leben kam halt dazwischen.

Rückblickend kann ich sagen: Es hat Spass gemacht, fiktionale Texte innerhalb des harten Zeichenlimits eines #Mastodon Posts zu verfassen. Man muss sich sehr beschränken und um jedes Wort kämpfen, um in 1'000 Zeichen eine Geschichte unterzubringen. Aber ich werde diese verkürzte #30DayChallenge nächstes Jahr wiederholen, wahrscheinlich in einem anderen Genre und mit anderen Inspirationsquellen. Dieses Jahr habe ich antike Anekdoten, Mythen und Geschichten als Grundlage genommen und versucht, sie zu übertragen.

My guest today Devine Lu Linvega. Devine is a self described vagabond, lifelong student and co-founder of Hundred Rabbits ( an artist collective that documents low-tech solutions with the hope of building a more resilient future). Devine lives and works on a 10M sailboat named Pino in order to go to remote parts of the world to learn about how technology degrades beyond the shores of the western world.
