Try vircadia.com/

Btw are you writing these posts yourself or are we just talking to ChatGPT here?

Okay. I'm not sure because you have quite some ideas, and you get quite some interesting feedback. But you don't seem to engage with any of the discussions you're starting. Plus it's really a mixed bag. Some ideas are good. Some have already been tried. And some seem very far-fetched to me. How would you for example integrate Mastodon and the VR metaverse? Input 500 character toots with a gamepad? Or what's your idea?
in reply to hendrik

I tried it back when it was high fidelity. It was a bit of a wonky service at the time. Poked at it a bit late 2022 early 2023 after it forked to vircadia. I had mixed experiences getting it up and visible. Eventually gave up for a while. It has some promise.

The one thing that kind of stuck negatively with me though, is that many Dev etc seemed to be heavy crypto bros? But YMMV. Will have to check and see if there were any updates in the last year.

[Ended] A 10 min survey on Mastodon usage by a masters student working on ways to make Mastodon more active.

I'm not said student, found this /r/Mastodon. Sharing here since I think it would be good supporting research on this. Shortened description from the info page:

This project is part of a Master Thesis that aims to explore the factors that influence user activity on Mastodon and their role in sustaining decentralized networks. ... Ultimately, this research seeks to contribute to the future development of decentralized social networks by identifying key factors that support user activity, offering valuable insights for administrators and moderators in maintaining active and sustainable communities.

"Our hypothesis is that those cell types are getting less efficient at integrating signals from our environment or from things that we're consuming," said Kelly Jin, Ph.D., a scientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and lead author of the study. "And that loss of efficiency somehow contributes to what we know as aging in the rest of our body. I think that's pretty amazing, and I think it's remarkable that we're able to find those very specific changes with the methods that we're using."

So our brain has a keep body healthy centre and that part gets less efficient and it causes aging? Huh, interesting.

Sociala mediers ineffektivitet.

Never Forgive Them

in reply to The Hobbyist

There's always going to be cars that are repairable, they're just never going to be the flashiest, newest, cheapest or most media and socially hyped up vehicles. And that's what people want.

Folk complain about a simple thing like non-replaceable batteries in phones. But there's always been phones with replaceable batteries. They're just not Samsung phones or packed with the latest AI.

And honestly, if people cannot understand what they're signing up for... Perhaps they shouldn't sign away their first born child to begin with?

You literally cannot attend a baseball game without installing the Ticketmaster app on a smartphone. Full stop. There are no alternatives.

Maybe a small example, but simply avoiding this stuff is becoming difficult.

in reply to ch00f

I am 100% sure it's possible to attend baseball games without the Ticketmaster app, just not the ones you want to see.

It may not be the flashiest, biggest games with the baseball superstars or the matches hyped up by the media or your peers. And that's what people want. 🤷

reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/…

I've stopped going to concerts at the big avenues because I have to use an app or buy tickets online. I can't see the biggest artists with the most flashy albums that's been hyped up by all the advertisements. Actually bums me out. But I can still attend other concerts at less predatory avenues.

Such is my way of navigating clown world.

in reply to Smee

Right. I can also just hang out in the park and watch little league.
in reply to ch00f

Yep. It's all about what you value the most - Your personal privacy and integrity or watching specific people slap a ball with a stick.
in reply to Smee

I understand the attitude of “if you want a curated stream of music or a free app, you need to accept that you are giving up your privacy to get that.” Like, pay for the app or buy the music and curate it yourself as an alternative. Just like people have done for generations.

But we’re talking about a thing that just four years ago required only a paper ticket that could be purchased with cash suddenly requiring an app. The product didn’t change in any way, it just requires an app now. I think everyone should be angry about that.

There is still radio, and that involves no sacrifice of privacy. Big name bands cost money. I've never been to a sports match in my life & I sincerely hope I never will, but I suppose big name sportsball teams cost lots too.

Brands are bad. Big brands are worse. If you've heard of the name, that's a bad sign. This is the simple basic situation and the sooner people realise that the better. If they are not able to realise that big names are bad names, then it will cost them.

in reply to ch00f

Sure and I agree. That's why I mention that I'm bummed out about not being able to attend big venue concerts any more. But I know why they're doing it and I understand the cost.

As far as I can se, every person who understand what this means is angry about it. But once one accepts that the vast majority of people are NPC's, not willing to sacrificy even such a meaningless thing as entertainment... This is what we get.

In fairness with the warped society we have, entertainment has become a value in it self, way more valuable than building a better world for ourselves and those who comes after. A consumer society to the max.

I've tried warning, I've offered alternatives, I've talked about the cost - But instead of people attending no-app-required baseball matches and build a new industry they begrudginly use the app, complain about signing away their privacy and just keep on eroding the world.

What are we to do but try to save ourselves?

in reply to ch00f

Are there other games or events that totally require Ticketmaster?
in reply to tabular

The graduation at my university. That's how they handled tickets. I was on both ends. Watching my friend graduate and giving to tickets to my family so they could come to my graduation.

The Plot Thickens

blog.hardill.me.uk/2024/12/31/…

Having already finished one Christmas project, it’s time to tick off another one.

This time to build a Brachiograph. This is a simple pen plotter that is based around an arm with a “shoulder” and “elbow” joints that are hobby servos (there is a 3rd servo to lift the pen/pencil off the paper).

I first saw one of these when @andypiper posted about some of the plots he’s done.

A Potential Fediverse equivalent to Neptune?

This entry was edited (11 months ago)
in reply to Teknevra

I don’t know anything about Neptune, but a Fediverse-version of TikTok is Loops.video.
in reply to mbirth 🇬🇧

Yeah, I don't see much that couldn't be added to Loops and the "ghost metrics" idea would be easy enough to add to most Fediverse platforms if it proved popular.

However, most of those features look like stuff they came up with in an afternoon to try and set it apart from TikTok while the main thrust is just to scoop up users as TikTok struggles with it's current issues.
