It's a start. And still a doorway into the fediverse. The average person doesn't care about reddit Lemmy or mbin. They care about Instagram pixelfed and twitter mastodon bluesky.
They will quickly find bluesky enshitifying out of necessity. And the fediverse will be there to catch them.

I wish everyone would get on PeerTube but also I can't really blame them because Peertube kinda sucks right now. They are slowly getting better. Some simple things would instantly make it a lot better:
- Instances actually federated with each other.
- Instance owners could create a curated feed of recommended accounts like you can on Mastodon.
- Larger instances didn't block federation requests from smaller ones like mine.
- Any of the "discover" feeds actually worked.
- Much like Mastodon, it's chock-full of content erroneously labeled as English.

I've been doing that exact thing, but only as long as the images would be Instagram-worthy in the first place. Not just temporary junk. I figure it's probably more optimized for picture storage, since that's the whole point right? Plus then I get it two places instead of one!
If you use the raw media link itself instead of the link to the post, it displays on Lemmy exactly the same as if you'd uploaded it here in the first place. So that's nice.

I have a Pixelfed account and have tried the app.
But I can't actually make posts using it. Don't know where the hiccup is.
Rough.
I wonder how easy it is to spin up your own instance. Or course, that's out of reach for most non-technical folks.
Keep your reels off Pixelfed please. Use loops.video instead.

If all the things in the work queue, you're balking on a COLOUR SCHEME?
That's like stopping the construction crew for using the wrong colour work boots, man!
No dark mode, no use.
BTW, work boot color is absolutely regulated depending on context. For example here in Germany, if you work in sterile or food-related industries then shoes are to be issued and used with a color that cannot inherently hide stains by the material you're working with, to prevent accidentally carrying contaminations into other clean zones.
So yes, you would stop the construction crew for using the wrong color work boots.
While you may be right about the boots thing that doesn’t stop me from thinking your obstinacy is a bit of a reach and looks embarrassing XD
Use display and text size preferences on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
With iOS accessibility features for the display, you can enlarge your text, make it bold, increase contrast, apply color filters, use Smart Invert, control auto-brightness, and more.Apple Support
While my comment was certainly controversial, the number of up-votes from users in the Fediverse means it shouldn't be ignored, either.
Luckily embarrassment is controlled by the person feeling it, and I seem to have a severe lack of that gene 😆
Then it's a health-hazard
Look, someone reported this as misinformation. Too bad me, the active mod here, gets pain in the eyes, sometimes flickering vision, and sometimes what I would describe as sea sickness from staring onto bright white screens. When I have no other choice because work, I invert all screen colors but sometimes correct colors are important.
So yeah, no proper dark mode means it's a crap app.
So yeah, these people who reported are people who think their opinions & google-searches are superior to common knowledge
Hold on, are you confusing something being hurting (as in, causing pain and/or pathological damage) with something being exhausting (as in, strains your eyes) with something being annoying?
Because if the three words are used interchangeably in your vocabulary that'd explain a lot of your seemingly random posts in the comments here. They're not the same (at all) to most people and especially not on a medical level (like that article you yourself provided, there is no medical evidence for non-extreme light sources making a difference in eye health).

And I don't use them, either. I'm a contributor to multiple Fediverse projects, including Lemmy-based apps and full identity management with ActivityPub. We do not deserve to get held to lower standards if we want the Fediverse to grow, especially when it comes to features that are about things like eye comfort, which can be a mild accessibility issue for some.
Dark mode is a basic necessity in apps today. It's not a convenience, but a necessity for adoption. There are many people who are going to open the app, then never use it again because of something that's bog-standard in the libraries and should only take a few hours to work in, which should have been done before an announcement.
So yes, I speak up, because I want this to succeed.
Edit: And yes, I'm very excited to see the growth achieved in the other post. Fantastic news.
@corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca, @'ing you so I'm not responding in two places 😉 I appreciate the work of the team, but it doesnt change the fact that to many, this is a showstopper and I'm pretty surprised it wasn't considered as a basic UX requirement pre-launch (see other comments in response to you).

Absolutely NO sexuality explicit content. This includes, but not limited to, images/videos/chat around sexual acts. There are other places on the internet for this.
😥
And for a federated network it is good to not force instance owners to manage avoiding the hosting of nudity by federating it.

Nudity isn't inherently sexual, and they pointedly have not mentioned it in the quoted text. It sounds like only explicit sexual content is forbidden, not nudity.
I do think even this is an overreach for a federated network, though, assuming Pixelfed is enforcing this on all instances (is that even possible?). It should be on the instance owners to make that decision. I couldn't find where the quoted text is sourced from, however.

Besides that, it could just be the mass influx of new users that are fleeing Instagram.

I wish there was an easy way to know which servers are getting hammered more than others.
I can easily make a post to my server via the website, but the app was giving me trouble, as an example. That's why I wonder where the hiccup is/was. Both the website and app are just interfaces to get data to a server, so if one doesn't work I'd assume the other doesn't too. But I dunno.
Edit: After writing this I went back and tried posting from the app again. It finally worked! I guess things have settled down.
Then allow users from one platform to use their ID on the other.
In fact, using fediverse social networks made me realize how much I could use a single point of identification for all the services. Like a fediverse passport or SSO.
You really should read pages you want to link. And I say this as a die-hard dark mode user. It's worrying that you so aggressively attack people get cannot even read the page you link far enough to notice that what you are saying about it is nonsense (like how it has "the same reason", which of course it doesn't, as made clear in the article).
Or you know, at least don't be such a dick. That's also help a lot!

Darker (& warmer) colours do not strain your eyes, why are we debating on this ?? This is well-known
You think I did not read the article ? There are more articles that I can link, but will you read it ?
(Also try using your intelligence & realize why I said "same reason")
This is one of the most laymen one I could find.
Again it doesn't really disprove my other point of light-mode being harmful.
Holy shit Gaiman and Palmer should both be in prison.
Also can I kink shame for a minute? It's messed up to feel the need to "possess" or "own" someone else. If that's your kink, maybe you should work on that, and view ppl as autonomous and worthy of respect, not as objects that exist solely in relation to how much control you have over them.
With a TikTok Ban Looming, Users Flee to Chinese App ‘Red Note’
Maybe It Was Never About the Factory Jobs
The article inadvertently lays bare the systemic collapse of neoliberal ideology that has long claimed to champion the common good while serving the interests of a detached elite. The working class is starting to see through the hollow promises of a system that consistently prioritizes corporate profits over tangible improvements in the standard of living. Biden’s so-called post-neoliberal agenda was marketed as a transformative New Deal for the forgotten Rust Belt. Yet, towns like Lordstown, swung further toward Trump in 2024. This is not a failure of communication, as Chait suggests, but a failure of substance. The working class, battered by decades of economic dislocation, saw Biden’s policies for what they were: a rebranding of neoliberalism, not its dismantling.
Chait’s arguments are as revealing as they are unconvincing. Inflation, he argues, was merely bad timing; Rust Belt voters were too impatient to appreciate Biden’s efforts. But these excuses only underscore the arrogance of a managerial class that believes it can lecture the working class into gratitude while ignoring their immediate struggles. The reality is that inflation hit hard, and no amount of subsidies could offset the pain of rising grocery bills or stagnant wages. Chait’s admission that Biden’s policies “did not yield more support among union members” is a damning indictment of a system that has lost touch with the people it claims to represent.
The article is a perfect example of how liberals fail to acknowledge their role in the erosion of the working class. Both parties embrace outsourcing jobs, hollowing out communities, and suppressing wages in service of a corporate elite that thrives on exploitation. Biden’s presidency was a continuation of these policies, dressed up in populist rhetoric.
The failure of liberalism, then, is not just a political failure but a moral one. It is the failure of an ideology that has long claimed to stand for progress while systematically betraying the very people it purports to serve. As Biden so honestly put it, nothing will fundamentally change until the grip of neoliberalism is broken. The workers deserve a system that truly serves their interests, not one that exploits them while pretending to care.
Why Biden’s Economic Populism Didn’t Make Him Popular
The theory that populist economic policies can win back the working class for Democrats has been tried, and it has failed.Jonathan Chait (The Atlantic)

My friend made an iOS/Mac app for opening Mastodon archives!
TL;DR download here: apps.apple.com/us/app/fedi-arc…
Here's what my friend says about the app:
It always bothered me that I couldn't find easily my old shitposts to self-boost them (I mean, there's Mastodon archive utilities for Windows and Linux; but none that I could find for us poor poor Apple users,,,)So at some point I started making my own app for that! Everything runs 100% on the device, no analytics, no cookies, no spyware bullshit. Just download your archive zip file and add it to the app!
There's a bunch of missing features still, but I've found that this is already more than enough for basic usage.
Enjoy :)

Maybe Lemmy can forcibly invent a new term for "ricing". (Good faith pls)
I'd learned about this last week, and this stuff is a bunch of Wikipedia searches so forgive me if I miss anything :]
Similar to git master and whitelist/blacklist having addressed racist origins, I've just learned that "ricing" -- i.e. way-far-from-default, colorfully souped-up *nix customizations -- came from a derogatory word for Asian "riced out" cars.
::: spoiler (click to enlarge spot where I came to learn about this)
Example in the lemmy.ml/c/linux community.
The linked Wikipedia article doesn't list *nix ricing specifically, but it's probably not a far reach -- for example, tech's master-slave came from cars too.
:::
Now I'm not here to start a debate on whether the term itself is bad. The arguments are done to death and predictable (old thread~hope~ ~I~ ~can~ ~link~ ~here~). Rather, I posit that we could probably invent a new term if we forced it hard enough.
For example, 4chan forcibly invented the use of the ok hand for "white power", as a collective prank (Wikipedia).
::: spoiler Further, Tumblr invented 'then beg' as an insult response to 'I beg your pardon/to differ'. (click to enlarge)
Based on Pukicho.
:::
So why can't Lemmy invent something too?
::: spoiler Here are some earlier takes. (click to enlarge for source, but they are listed below anyway)
:::
I surmise it has to be (1) somewhat unique and (2) short and nounable/verbable.
- Customization doesn't fit -- it's too broad. Changing the wallpaper is a customization -- diagonalizing your screen is a rice (term to be replaced...).
- Bespoke doesn't fit either. That's for a duct-tape script you hack together.
- Pimping out... is not a good alternative. It preexists^(citation^ ^needed?)^ and has inertia but it's not any better.
- Souping up... doesn't roll off the tongue so much. But it's food-related (and thus not far from "rice"). Though I can't see myself saying "Yo, check out this epic soup."
Brainstorming welcome :P

Here I am, an Asian, reclaim it to be neutral meaning. I will still use ricing.
Go check any English Asia Linux Group, especially on YouTube and Facebook Group, people are using ricing neutrally.
Language change with time, and making it neutral is totally fine and okay.
What you're doing here is just yet another instance of Westerner forcing "correct English," not realizing English is a global language and can develop independently outside US, Canada, or Europe.
lol even funnier that this western-centric Lemmy removed my comment about ricing, while actual Linux community CJK countries or English Asia does not recognize it as a slur and use ricing neutrally. Basically reclaims it.

Personally I don't feel either way about this stuff being racist or not. I'm an Asian and I am completely unaffected. But I do think that some people are, and it'd probably be nice to help those people vs. ignoring them.
For git master specifically, it was based off of a foggy memory of something in my RSS feed, and I was just pointing out that it was something that some companies addressed.
I removed this because it has nothing to do with linux specifically, and as expected, it brought out a lot of people defending the use of this historically racist term, and /asablackman'ing it.
I've reinstated it and removed the offending comments for now.
Also I don't know why this needs a discussion at all. There's hundreds of words in english for something that looks good, and you can be more specific about it : snazzy, sleek, cool, streamlined, nifty, retro
Yeah but it doesn't affect me and I'm fine with using a racist term because I choose not to think about it. That should make it fine for everyone.

It's not like black people using the N-word, it's like white people using the n-word because a stranger on the internet said it's ok.
aside from the use of the "r-word"
You don't think them casually dropping a slur might invalidate their opinion on whether a different word is a slur? Fucking LLM-ass logic right there.
The "r-word" in question refers to the being food discussed (although it's not really a discussion, given we have the correct opinion and "your comment is getting deleted" opinion) in the post, since we're apparently deleting comments for using it now. Hence the quotation marks.
As for the 1st paragraph, (a) i'm arguing it's nowhere like using the n-word at all, and (b) it was said by the Asian dude, so I don't see how so.
Are you telling me that you have so little understanding of slurs and their use that you think people are getting banned for saying using the word rice? You cannot be serious. How dare you think you have the intelligence to hold an opinion.
I know what you're arguing you fucking dunce, I just told you you're wrong. There are plenty of slurs that aren't as bad as the n-word, you're not allowed to use any of them. And b) doesn't matter. You don't use the n-word even if a black person "gives you permission", because that makes you a fucking racist.
I'm telling you the post explicitly asked about opinions, and the "wrong" ones that used the "r-word" happened to be blocked, and there is a comment from another mod that explicitly tells they'll remove stuff using that. Although it's a reasonably short comment that's easily blocked from view with a medium-sized justice boner, so it's understandable you've missed it.
Although, you're somewhat right, the meaning of a slur was a bit off in my vocabulary. I'd still argue it isn't one in context ('cause it neither refers to a person nor is it derogatory in its current form)... However, I'd also like to play along and give you folks another (and, arguably, a more worthy) which hunt target -- chinesium. You know, currently a derogatory, currently refers to a particular nation, so...
the "wrong" ones that used the "r-word" happened to be blocked
I'm sure you can find enough examples of the word rice, ricing, and ricer to put two and two together and realise the "r-word" isn't what got them blocked.
there is a comment from another mod that explicitly tells they'll remove stuff using that.
No it doesn't, because that hasn't happened.
nor is it derogatory in its current form
Are you really not able to put together how transferring a term used to deride body modifications (using ethnic associations) to UI modifications is derogatory? Do you think it magically lost context somewhere along the way, the history of the term just disappearing into the aether?
I'd also like to play along and give you folks another (and, arguably, a more worthy) which hunt target

So it's not that you have anything against asian people, you just think it's ok to use a term that origtinated in saying japanese people eat so much rice they even run their cars on it. Uh huh. Would you defend the N-word on the basis that it's a commonly used word and you don't understand why it's so bad?
just an assumption you're from the US
Extremely unsafe assumption, but newsflash - your ancestors don't need to be the specific ones who invented a racism for it to be racist to act like them. If you copy someone else's racism you are still the one being racist. You've been told multiple times by multiple people that the term is racist, but you're arguing it's not racist because you don't know how it's racist. Have you maybe considered you're just not very smart and need to study racism a bit more? Maybe learn what this whole "microaggression" thing people keep talking about it?
Maybe call it a 'ride'? It would still be a car reference, think about how people talk about cars as their 'rides'. At least to my understanding, calling a car a 'ride' also implies some level of the car being special. 'ride' is also only 4 letters, and isn't any harder to type, some of the other comments have really long terms which are a bit annoying to type.On the negative side it is also 1 letter away from 'rice', so that might not be ideal.
eat so much rice they even run their cars on it
So what exactly? It's just a stereotype. A stereotypical Russian (that's where I'm from) would be a gopnik babooshka in abibas riding a bear while playing a balalayka and drinking vodka... And guess what? We find it funny. Well, maybe except babooshkas: many find it weird you stress the "oo" syllable instead of the 1st 'a'. It'd be the same with black guys and rap music or Texans and guns.
would you defend the n-word
If it originated as a stereotype, stopped being used offensively several decades ago, and was then repurposed into being a praise of sorts.
It's just a stereotype.
I need you to be honest - do you not know what stereotypes are, or do you not know what racism is? Stereotyping is one of the conceptual parts of racism, so saying it's not racist because it's a stereotype is like saying pizza isn't Italian because it's from Naples.
stopped being used offensively several decades ago, and was then repurposed into being a praise of sorts.
Could you give me sources for when this happened for "ricing" and "ricer"? Because there are a lot of people in this thread telling you that it's still offensive, and I'm pretty sure they know a little bit more than you about racism.
The thing is, this slur is only used in America and only affect Asian American.
In Asia itself, the usage is neutral. You can actually join any English Asia Linux community and find people using it neutrally. Even Asian American themself already neutralize the word.
Enforcing one standard of English is not recognizing that english is now a global language, with variation of English like Singaporean English, Malaysian English, and so on.
The same way that queer used to be a slur, but not now.
Language is not one standard. One community might consider it offensive, while others are not. And that's fine. Context matters.
I think the difference is that with the n-word both the targets of the insult and the non-targets recognize it as an insult. Meanwhile considering the rice-word, both parties either only know the current-day meaning or think that the insult and the description of someone making their car look (but not function) like a race car are 2 different terms with different origin.
You also seem to imply that the asian poster might have just been a white person trying to prove their point. Well here is a video of a chinese-american using it (and not as some kind of "protest slur" or what's the term for rappers using the n-word in their songs) inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=68sTT4m…
I agree that using terms with racist origin is bad but I think that this term outside of the linux circles cannot be racist because nobody even knows it was racist at some point.
edit: Obviously it should stop being used inside the linux circles because a) people here are more likely to read the wikipedia article than watch hours of automotive video content and b) the term does not even make sense for linux desktops because it just means "to make your desktop look cool". There aren't cosmetic linux desktop mods that make the computer look fast or like supercomputer or whatever.
Yeah, mods are power-tripping.
Gonna need a new Linux community soon.

Isn't it the same as tuning?
Although it's unclear what tuning is because it depends on who says it:
- It does mean doing modifications to a vehicle for actual performance improvements
- It's used extensively by ricers to describe themselves and their hobby and they think it's a positive term
- It's used extensively by people who dislike ricing and most definitely as a derogatory term
Yet for all its faults, I believe that's the closest word to ricing you'll find that is universally understood, neutral and isn't rendered hopelessly bland and meaningless by the process of political correctness newspeak.

I say lets keep 'ricing', I don't want the one and only language we can communicate with being full of 'wordmines'.
wordmine noun: A word that looks innocent or having positive meaning, but having a secondary negative meaning. The negative meaning is not known/obvious to the one speaking or writing it. Inspired by 'landmine', wordmine blows up your reputation when you use it, like a landmine blows up your leg when you step on it. Yes I made the word up.
IMO wordmines discriminate against everyone who is less familiar with English or American culture.

Ricing isn't exactly the same as personalized though.
Ricing when it comes to cars is putting on a giant wing and a huge muffler on a Honda Civic.
Ricing in the Gentoo community is turning on every compiler optimization flag for the main portage config file without knowing what they're doing, potentially actually de-optimizing your setup.
There's an element of "overdone" involved usually whenever someone is called a ricer.
To personalize your setup, is to deviate from the default config to better match your preferences - whatever those may be, however over the top those may be.
That doesn't imply any optimization, unless it's what you personally prefer.

.de domain and my first thought was this was about using a potato ricer to make spätzle. I may not be normal.
This is a tough one, because to me "ricing" or "riced out" carries additional negative undertones (racism aside). I have always heard it used in a way implying that it was referencing enhancements done in a cheap or gaudy/classless way. Think of the most Razer-like LED adorned gaming PC setup, that could have easily been described as being "riced up".
I think the phrase "decked out" works OK, and seems to also lack the negative connotation, which may or not be in line with the goal here.
Also, seeing your example ideas you shot down, I am not sure you full understand "souping up" phrase. The term "souped up" has been in use for over a century and I still hear people use it pretty frequently. It is generally meant to imply something has been made faster or more powerful, frequently with cars, and probably why some people argue it is a shortened version of supercharged. I agree that it probably isn't a good fit here, but not being of how it sounds.
Is "ricing" not originally related to customised cars from street racing or something? I personally don't see an issue with it.
The activity itself is quite good for making people aware of how a desktop linux OS is working but doing it excessively is a bit silly so makes sense for jt to have a silly name.
The term wasn't about Japanese drivers, it was about Japanese cars. They were called "rice burners" as in they were fueled by rice, not gasoline. I guess that was someone's joke that became wide spread.
You're right that it was sort of derogatory to refer to cars that had all their customization on things like giant exhausts, huge wheels, neon lights, rather than performance improvements.
I've never heard the term used to refer to the ethnicity of the driver, just the ethnicity of the car, so I don't think it's racist, shrug.
Yeah as someone that was in the car scene during that era, I can't recall a single time it was used to refer to a person. It was all about the car and its mods - and even then, it was used to describe any car, Asian or other, that was overdone or, often, just not to the taste of the viewer. One time since described my user of a Sony radio as "rice" because they were supposedly not reliable. I never had any issues, but that was their reaction.
I understand why people might consider it racist, and I'm not a fan of the term because of that, and I'd prefer something better. But I do not believe racism was the intent when I saw it used.

It is not, as I learned 18d ago lemmy.blahaj.zone/comment/1216…
Riced out is an adjective denigrating a badly customized sports car, "usually with oversized or ill-matched exterior appointments". ... Examples of "rice burner" used literally, meaning one who burns rice or rice fields, as in stubble burning, date to 1917. In 1935 it appeared in a US newspaper caption with a racial connotation, disparaging East Asian people. ... In some cases, users of the term assert that it is not offensive or racist, or else treat the term as a humorous, mild insult rather than a racial slur.
Spice/spiced could work. But it's still an allusion, not sure if that defeats the point.
For example, 4chan forcibly invented the use of the ok hand for “white power”, as a collective prank
Which, outside of specific contexts where you're already confident someone is a WN, was quickly forgotten and never really took off. It's not a great example of a social shift.
This will and probably has got a bunch of flak but I'm with you. There's nothing wrong with recognising when we can pick a better term for something we enjoy.
Like, I get why people use "-porn" as a suffix and it isn't offensive to me but I still won't use that in a workplace. It'd be cool if someone thought of a better neologism!
I thought hard on this (I just like naming things). I came up with gemming. Graphical Environment Management. Unixgems.
It sorta works because customizing your environment is sort of like putting the finishing gems on it.
opening the linked thread like:
Anyways I'm gay and transgender, so I've decided that from now on I'm saying that I'm transing my desktop.
Jokes aside, going from repressed neutral boy clothes to vibrant and colorful girl clothes and makeup and feeling cute has been such a great part of transitioning. This is kind of how I see customizing my desktop now. It always comes with such boring dry defaults, so I trans her gender and give her a makeover and now my computer is all pretty. So I'm sticking with transing.

Joining Haidra, instance democracy and the tantalizing potential for user flairs
Hey peeps, I got a few things to talk about.
First of all I am happy to announce that the Divisions by zero will be joining the newly minted Haidra non-profit org. The plan is to use Haidra as the fiscal host for your donations to the instance and have things a bit more organized in the backend. Haidra is our own non-profit, so it should carry our values and avoid conflict with people who don't understand our ethos.
With the non-profit in place, I wanted to put into action a plan I had for a long time. To implement some sort of radical instance democracy. I don't believe in Benevolent Dictators for Life and thus I always look for ways to receive a mandate for my actions all stakeholders, rather then deciding top-down. Unfortunately the nature of hosting a service like this does not allow anarchist democracy to be practised, as at the end of the day, there's a sysadmin with the passwords holding all the power, but given that for this specific instance, that sysadmin is myself, I want to try and experiment with this.
As part of Haidra, the project itself (i.e. the divisions by zero) maintains full autonomy, so its own decision-making remains in its own community. However as a member project, it also effectively gets a vote in the internal running of Haidra. For me use your mandate, I need to figure out a way to receive it. To this end, I want to try and implement some sort of system to allow such democratic decision making.
Unfortunately we cannot reasonably allow every registered member to vote on instance policies, as it's trivial for any bigot to join and make sockpuppets and throwaway accounts to affect our policies.
So I want the voting process to be somehow run by the instance stakeholders, so I came up with the concept that the only people who should be able to take decisions on the instance, are those who have monetary contributed to the hosting and personnel costs, or who are putting significant effort into nurturing communities here and potentially in the larger fediverse. The idea is that if you've put into action your support of this instance, you should deserve some say on how it's run. That said, while I'm still doing most of the work behind the scenes, I still need to feel good running this instance, so I will need to come up with ways to reject people from the voting process if they don't match our ethos. I won't in good faith allow bigots to vote, just because they have money.
Now the trick is how to do this in a way that is manageable. While I have access to the accounts subscribed on Ko-Fi and Liberapay, connecting them to accounts in here is a massive PITA. Likewise it's not easy to easily remember who is contributing in direct action to this instance.
So once more the mad science lab that is my brain, has come up with some new ideas. First I have updated the threativore bot so that it now also provides a REST API on top of its bot functionalities. The REST API can now be used to retrieve extra user info that is maintained by the instance admins about users on our instance, that is not always relevant to the software (and as such is unlikely to be added to the API by the devs).
One big aspect of this update is that I can maintain user tags inside threativore. These tags are free-form and will allow us to mark users as contributors through ko-fi or other means. In fact, I even setup a complete backend DB connection to threativore and a webhook for ko-fi, so that as soon as you donate to the instance, you will be marked on threativore as a contributor, so long as you used the same email address on both (if you didn't, and you want to be recognized, please send me the email you used on ko-fi in a PM and we can override)
However, because I can't just do things only a little bit, I decided to extend the tags functionality to also have a key for "flair". Each tag assigned to a user has an optional flair key, which can be an emoji, or a link to an image. Currently those flairs don't serve any purpose, but I have already pinged some of the popular third party UIs (which we're currently hosting and I wholeheartedly suggest you use), to assist us in making those flairs visible.
In fact, those flairs are not even restricted only to our own instance, we can potentially flair any user from any instance and I have a lot of plans to make expand this functionality. The only limitation is finding UI developers to handle that end.
In fact, I have already created and onboarded some starting flairs for our instance. Some of them will be automatically assigned by the ko-fi webhook, and some others will be automatically assigned by the way you answered your registration application. Here they are:
Ko-Fi
These 4 are coming from Ko-Fi subscribers. The idea is to use them to flair people so I can quickly see whose votes would count in the democratic process. Initial plan is that every subscriber should be allowed to vote, but only subscribers who fund a lot can open new votes for mandates.
: Drinking Mate is the tag for people who have donated in Ko-Fi, once off. The tag will expire after 2 months.
: Threadiverse Enjoyer: The people at the lowest end of the ko-fi support.
: Deck Hand: The people who support significantly through the year (as it stands, each of them effectively covers half a month of hosting per year)
: Salty Dog: The people who massively support each month (each of them effectively covers ~1/5th the monthly cost)
Affiliations
The below flairs are going to be assigned depending on how you answered the registration application. If you mentioned more than affiliation, you will be assigned all of them matching.
: The bread book: Will be assigned if you mentioned an anarchist.
: Jolly Roger: Will be assigned if you mentioned a pirate
: Wildebeest: Will be assigned if you mentioned a FOSS advocate/software.
Finally we have the MVP
which I plan to assign to signicant contributors to the instance in some way. Perhaps lifetime funding and/or fediverse presence? Perhaps we should vote on it :D
I will also be looking into liberapay flairs soon.
All of this is only the beginning of what I want to do here, but this beginning will be short-lived if we can't get UI developers on board. So if you're maintaining one of the 3rd party UIs in the sidebar, please contact me. Likewise, if you're excited by any of this and you can help hack the exising lemmy UIs (including the default one) for our instance purposes, please speak up and that would be a good ground for an MVP flair! :)
In the meantime I will use threativore to start doing some scripting to allow only-staholder voting, and we'll try it out soon.
If you have ideas and improvements about all this please post. If you have ideas for more flairs and way reasons to get them, let me know. If you have thoughts about how this democratic experiment should be structured, now is a good time to write them!

Loops by Pixelfed: Progress Tracking Request
With the ongoing TikTok concerns, I'm curious about the development status of Loops by Pixelfed.
I've checked their GitHub repository multiple times, but it seems pretty sparse.
Does anyone know of:
- A dedicated progress tracking page
- A development blog
- Active discussion channels (Discord, Matrix, etc.)
- Roadmap resources
- Developers to Follow
etc.?
I'm interested in following the project's evolution but haven't found a reliable way to stay updated.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
