Netanyahu compromises with Smotrich, Ben-Gvir to secure ceasefire deal
Israeli media reports indicate that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered enticing proposals to Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, including plans to expand settlements in the West Bank and enhance security measures.
Netanyahu reportedly assured the two ministers that upcoming actions would bolster their popularity, warning that "if Ben-Gvir withdraws from the government, political gains may be credited solely to Smotrich."
Ben-Gvir emphasized that over the past year, he and his team successfully thwarted attempts to finalize a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, arguing that such agreements pose both security and political risks to "Israel".
According to Israeli reports, Netanyahu is attempting to persuade Ben-Gvir and Smotrich to back the agreement by highlighting two key points: first, that Trump’s presidency will bring significant benefits to "Israel", and second, that "Israel" will be able to resume the war if needed, with US support.

Asking for a recommendation: 60% silent wireless split with a trackpoint/touchpad
Hey!
I'm searching for a dream keyboard design, and cannot find this anywhere on the internet, so asking for a recommendation (or maybe a "nope, you won't find it, build it yourself").
My main concerns are:
1. Split (no RSI, but my shoulders feel much better when keyboard halves are far apart).
2. Completely wireless with good battery life (have a keychron k3, their battery life is abysmal), looking at least for 1m+
3. 60% (fell in love with the UHK layout, less than that is too chord-heavy, i want my numbers to be pressable as-is without modifier keys), both due to layout and portability.
4. Integrated trackpoint/touchpad/anything mouse-like. I'm using a trackpoint with uhk, and got completely rid of mouse and trackpad.
UHK60 checks almost all boxes, but it being wired is inconvenient, and i for some reason couldn't get it to be completely silent (tried lubing and pads), probably something to do with the metal backplate.
Disconnect MK1 (hidergo.fi/shop/disconnect_mk1…) is kinda almost perfect (although i would still prefer a trackpoint), but they are out of stock for the time being, and judging by their discord are not planning on making any new ones anytime soon.

Intrepid white dwarf has a close encounter with a massive black hole
WASHINGTON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Scientists have detected emanating from the nucleus of a galaxy relatively close to our Milky Way flashes of X-rays gradually increasing in frequency that seem to be coming from a white dwarf - a highly compact stellar ember - with a death wish.
The observations made using the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton orbiting X-ray telescope appear to show a white dwarf nearing the point of no return - called the event horizon - as it orbits the galaxy's supermassive black hole, according to the researchers.
"It is probably the closest object we've ever observed orbiting around a supermassive black hole. This is extremely close to the black hole's event horizon," said Megan Masterson, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology doctoral student in physics and lead author of the study that was presented at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Maryland this week and will be published in the journal Nature.
Seems more likely he'll just let things devolve further...
Trump would not elaborate on what he meant by his threat — first announced on social media in early December — that "all hell will break out" if a deal is not made."It will not be good for Hamas, and it will not be good, frankly, for anyone," Trump said. -Source
Not sure he understands the implications of his own statement...
Well, let's see what happens.
I also highly doubt he's gonna do anything. Add on top of that, that very few outside countries seem to care about Trump, much less respect him enough to actually listen to anything he has to say.
What did that 'respect' get little old Joey Brandon? All Trump had to do was threaten to cut off the weapons.
They already have weapons, both sides, and America doesn't sit on the worlds supply of weapons. So that will get him nothing.
His envoy pressing for a ceasefire seems to do very little, as everybody else has been doing the same for a while now.
What else have you got?
Dude Trump isn’t even in office yet lol.
Your logic as viewed by everyone else:
“If it’s good, Trump did it. If it’s bad, it’s Biden’s fault.”
PLEASE tell me you’re thinking it through more than this, then let’s have a dialogue about that thought process because I am incredibly curious how you got there.
Kool aid comes in multiple colors.

Do you understand the difference between Democrats trying to take credit, and Israelis and Arab sources attributing the credit to Trump?
One takes credit. The other is given credit.
Trump is claiming credit for all of it. Biden is claiming credit for the agreement, while acknowledging Trump was kept informed and is responsible for the implementation.
Anyone with internet access can compare what we know about the plan and what Biden proposed last year and see the similarities.
Just because Trump posted to social media first doesn’t mean he did shit.
Now you’re just grasping at air to try and not be wrong.
Says who? An anonymous source on a paywalled article from a side with a heavy bias?
Because my less biased source already proved otherwise.
At this point you’re just creating headcanon and arguing with that.
Downvoting doesn’t make you any less wrong.
That is objectively already more than dems did.
With dems we just got news articles about how behind closed doors Biden was super duper mad about the genocide then they'd send more bombs.
Although Democrats did completely drop the ball on this and never should have sent Israel anything, we also got the terms of this deal last year from Biden, so there also that.
Oh wait you’re from hexbear. You’ll just double down anyway.

Gaza cease-fire and hostage deal reached between Israel and Hamas, officials say
Qatar's PM is slated to hold a press conference Wednesday night announcing the deal to the media, a Qatari news outlet reported. Netanyahu is currently convening a situation assessmentJonathan Lis (Haaretz)
The Trump Factor: Gaza Ceasefire Deal Appears Close
The prospect for an agreement to halt Israel’s war against the Palestinians of Gaza is at its most promising point in over a year. Sources close to Hamas’s negotiating team tell Drop Site News that on Monday Hamas agreed to the framework text—including an exchange of captives and hostages—and had not requested any significant changes or amendments. But the devil, as always, is in the details.
Palestinian negotiators told Drop Site they remain cautiously optimistic a deal will be signed, though they point to previous rounds of ceasefire negotiations that saw Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insert new demands in the eleventh hour, effectively sabotaging the agreements. “I hope Netanyahu won’t play the same game of the last 15 months,” said one Palestinian source. Al-Ansari, the Qatari official, also alluded to the fragile nature of the discussions and past experience with Netanyahu. “The most minute detail can undermine the negotiation,” he said. “It is not about how big or small an issue is.”
What is different this time, however, is that President-elect Donald Trump has made very clear his demand that a deal be reached before his inauguration on January 20. The terms of the deal being negotiated are largely consistent with what was on the table last May when outgoing President Joe Biden first announced it. Biden allowed Netanyahu to steamroll him for months—rewarding Israel with billions of dollars in arms transfers and political support after rejecting that ceasefire deal. Since that time, tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians have been killed and maimed and an unknown number of Israeli captives killed, either by their captors or Israeli strikes. All the while, the administration and its backers repeatedly assured voters in the U.S. that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were working tirelessly to achieve a ceasefire deal.

Passwords 101: don’t enter your passwords just anywhere they’re asked for | Kaspersky official blog
Learn how to distinguish a fraudulent site from a real one.
Whenever you’re asked to log in to an online service, verify your identity, or download a document through a link, you’re usually required to enter your username and password. This is so common that most of us do it automatically without thinking twice. However, scammers can trick you into giving them passwords for your email, government service websites, banking services, or social networks by mimicking the service’s login form on their own (third-party) website. Don’t fall for it: only the email service itself can ask to verify your email password — no one else! The same applies to government services, banks, and social networks.
To avoid becoming a victim of fraud, every time you enter a password, take a moment to check where exactly you’re logging in, and what window is asking for your credentials. Three main scenarios are possible here — two are safe, one is fraudulent. Here they are.
Safe scenarios for entering passwords
- Logging into your email, social network, or online service through the official website. This is the simplest scenario, but you need to make sure you are indeed on the legitimate site — with no errors in the URL. If you’re accessing the online service by clicking a link in an email or from search results, carefully check the browser’s address bar before entering your password. Make sure that both the service name and the site address are correct and match each other.
Why is it so important to take an extra second to check? Creating phishing copies of legitimate sites is a favorite trick of scammers. A phishing site’s address may be almost identical to the original, differing in just a letter or two (for example, the “i” letter might be replaced with an “I”), or use a different domain zone.
It’s also rather simple to create a link that appears to lead to a site but actually takes you somewhere else. Check it out for yourself: this link seems to lead to our blog kaspersky.com/blog but actually redirects you to our other blog — securelist.com.
The image below shows examples of legitimate login pages for various services where you can safely enter your username and password.
Examples of legitimate login pages for various services. Entering your credentials here is safe
- Logging in to a site using an auxiliary service. This is a convenient way to log in without creating additional passwords, commonly used for file storage services, collaboration tools, and so on. Auxiliary services are typically large email providers, social networks, or government service sites. The login button may say something like “Continue with Google”, “Continue with Facebook”, “Continue with Apple”, etc.
When you click the button, another window opens belonging to the auxiliary service (Google, Facebook, Apple, etc.). It works like this: the external service verifies your identity and confirms this to the site you’re logging in to. It’s crucial to check the addresses in both windows: make sure that the pop-up window asking for your password really belongs to the auxiliary service you expected (Google, Facebook, Apple, etc.), and the main window really belongs to the legitimate site you’re trying to log in to. In many cases, the pop-up window also indicates which site you’ll be logging in to. This auxiliary service mechanism allows you to enter the desired site without it ever seeing your password. Password verification takes place on the side of the auxiliary service (Google, Facebook, Apple, etc.). IT specialists call this login method single sign-on (SSO).
Example of SSO login to eBay through an auxiliary service (Google) that verifies your password. Entering your credentials here is also safe
Fraudulent scenario: password theft
You receive an email or message with a login link, click it, and end up on a site that very closely resembles a legitimate email, social network, file-sharing, or e-signature service. The site asks you to log in to your account to prove your identity. To this end, you’re prompted to enter your email and password for your email, government services site, banking service, or social network directly on this site.
In this scenario, either there’s no pop-up window from a legitimate service (such as the one in the previous case), or the additional window also belongs to some third-party site. This is a scam designed to steal your
Look at the address bar: this is definitely not Netflix! Don’t enter your credentials here!
account password! Remember, a third-party site can’t verify your password — it simply doesn’t know it, and passwords are never shared between sites.
How to protect yourself from password theft
- Carefully check the address of the site requesting your password.
- Only enter a password for a service on the official website of that service — nowhere else.
- Sometimes a separate window appears for entering a password. Make sure this window is a regular browser window where you can see the address bar and verify the address.
- Scammers can create lookalike sites with addresses that are hard to distinguish from real ones. To avoid falling into such a trap, use reliable anti-phishing protection on all devices and platforms. We recommend Kaspersky Premium, the winner of an anti-phishing test in 2024.
- An advanced protection method is to use apassword manager for all your accounts. It verifies the actual page address, and will never enter your credentials on an unfamiliar site — no matter how convincing it looks.

"Bourgeois Democracy": What Do Marxists Mean By This Term?
By Scott Cooper Republished from Left Voice . In 1947, Winston Churchill famously said that “democracy is the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.Scott Cooper (Hampton Institute)
No. Leave my IRA and 401k alone.
There is a reason every country that's tried a wealth tax has abandoned it (or neutered it to the point that it's primarily the burden of the middle class, completely defeating the ostensibly-stated purpose of getting more money from the wealthiest), learn some world history.
No, they abandon it because the total tax revenue after implementation literally goes down instead of up, lol.
Just because 100 people will buy your product X at $10 and you make $1000, doesn't mean you're guaranteed to make $2000 if you sell X for $20 instead. That's basically the same principle--raising taxes doesn't necessarily lead to an increase in revenue. People react to changes in policy.
This is not speculation, it literally already happened. Stop speaking about this from your assumed expectations and learn the actual history.
If I refer to the negative outcome of something already attempted multiple times, while people insist we should try doing the exact same thing in ignorance of those attempts and they outcomes, there is no "feigning" going on; I actually do know more.
And my analogy is directed at the people who have demonstrated their ignorance/naivete by insisting that raising taxes always leads to an increase in tax revenue, even though, again, knowledge of that history makes it clear that not only is that not a given, but that it literally caused the opposite every time previously attempted.
You need to stop feigning competence when you're insisting we repeat others' mistakes. Learn some history.
You're doubling down again, lmao. You aren't the god of econ 101, and are deliberately trying to make a false point, that being a wealth tax doesn't help just because it can be done poorly. Moreover, I'm a Communist, a wealth tax is insufficient for what I want, it's just a tool in a toolbox.
In your own words, "learn some history."
You aren't the god of econ 101
Yeah, it doesn't take a god to understand that something we already know doesn't work shouldn't be attempted again.
There is a reason that the could of countries that still have wealth taxes (read: didn't repeal them outright) changed them so that they're no longer aimed at the wealthiest, and they've become just another tax primarily shouldered by the middle class, defeating the whole stated purpose of getting more tax revenue out of the ultra-wealthy.
a false point, that being a wealth tax doesn't help just because it can be done poorly.
You say this as if what's being proposed in the US is materially different from the previously-failed implementations around the world.
It isn't. There has been no good answer to the question 'how do we keep this from being the catastrophic failure it was elsewhere?' from its proponents. They're just doing the infamous definition of insanity, just try the exact same thing and expect a better result, because reasons.
All of your points involved putting words in my mouth, and evading the simple facts:
- It's been tried myriad times already, and has failed not only to increase tax revenue from the wealthiest, but also failed to increase the overall amount of tax revenue, period
- You clearly have no historical knowledge of the above, nor of why they failed and were soon repealed by every nation that implemented it, or neutered completely out of their ostensible aim to target the ultra-wealthy, and becoming just another tax burden for the middle class
- The above makes it extra clear that the 'but it'll work when we do it' is a completely empty claim. If you can't even articulate why it failed all those times before, how can you hope for a more successful attempt?
All you've done here is straw man me and accuse me of being condescending, while desperately evading the above.
Do you really think all those countries that implemented and then later repealed their wealth taxes, got rid of them because they were effective? Use your brain.
To name a few:
- the classic riot, violence and/or revolution
- the coup
- organizing through unions and have general strikes until things change
- sustained peaceful protest
- voting
- switching to a different (underground) economic system
- massive emigration
All come with some serious downsides of course.
but how will we pay for <anything that's not increased military spending>???
talk about social services and taxes are like a bake sale, talk about funding war and it's what you describe
How would you tax a software company that has remote work and runs on someone else's servers?
The land they need could probably be a small single office room and a letter box.
Edit: sentence structure
Everyone in this thread should support an inheritance tax
It is not a "death tax" it's a tax on unearned, undeserved income

DJI will no longer stop drones from flying over airports, wildfires, and the White House
DJI will no longer enforce “No-Fly Zones,” instead only offering a dismissible warning when pilots attempt to fly their drones into or near restricted airspace.Sean Hollister (The Verge)
Bleh, I've only ever flown a drone a few days at a time out at our city park. Then I criticize their controls and rewire the controller to be more intuitive, which lets me fly it fairly easily even in 30mph winds, but always seems to burn one of the motors up within 3 days.
I ain't flying the things to spy on anyone, I'm just trying to improve their controls.
Also, I never said I flew in any area that would put anyone in any sort of danger, nor do I ever intend to. I study ergonomic controllers and might rearrange the controls to be more intuitive, in an open public park, so what?
I'd appreciate if you didn't try to imply some nefarious activity without some sort of evidence. But fuck China, they don't need my goddamn GPS coordinates!
You missed my point. I have an older version that never required location services to begin with.
What they describe there is a new version that still requires location services, but has relaxed the rules to only give a passive warning in prohibited areas.
Fuckall with that, I keep the version that doesn't require location permissions at all.
