While the Artemis II crew will be the first humans to test NASA’s Orion spacecraft in space, they will also conduct science investigations that will inform future deep space missions, including a lunar science investigation as Orion flies about 4,000 to 6,000 miles from the Moon’s surface.

L'Online Safety Act del Regno Unito riguarda la censura, non la sicurezza. L'articolo di Paige Collings mette in guardia gli USA dalla pericolosa cazzata che sta facendo Londra

@Etica Digitale (Feddit)

Our SMS OTP service is backed by Twilio and our account balance is currently running low. We need to recharge 20 USD (approx 1800 Indian rupees) balance immediately!

To give you an idea, SMS expenses were 80 USD for the last year.

We would like to request you to help us cover our costs by donating to us at opencollective.com/pravapp/pro…

Thank you!

#XMPP #FreeSoftware

in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki We can use that only as two factor authentication after sign up. One core requirement of Prav is to offer same phone number based on boarding experience like WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal, for that we should be able to verify the phone number ownership.

We might be able to use it for later 2fa use case after account is created, even then being able to verify they still control the phone number is crucial in this path. Other #xmpp providers could try other 2fa strategies.

in reply to Pirate Praveen

None of this stuff seems to be free software.

I try to visit opencollective.com/pravapp/pro…. and it says "Enable JavaScript and cookies to continue" - access to the site is denied without execution of proprietary software.

It's a severe freedom and privacy defect for an XMPP client to require tying the account to a phone number - there are plenty of XMPP servers where you just pick a nickname and a password and there's no problems.

The solution to your expenses problem is to stop immorally doing the wrong thing and remove the requirement of a phone number.

in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki Open Collective is definitely #FreeSoftware github.com/opencollective/open… has the source code for Open Collective service. You just chose to use librejs limitation to decide something is Free Software or not. #LibreJS only works for simple websites and it is wrong to blindly trust the output of LibreJS. Many people make this same mistake.
in reply to Pirate Praveen

>definitely free software.
>link to github, where you cannot contribute without running proprietary software
>discord.
>proprietary CoC that sublicenses MIT expat.
This software required to access the opencollective website is proprietary; static.cloudflareinsights.com/…

Arbitrarily remote executed JavaScript is always proprietary, no matter the license, as the user doesn't have the 4 freedoms over it.

It's proprietary software.

in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki For any service, the parameters are different. You need to self host it if you want to excercise your freedoms fully. Focusing on javascript is like missing woods for trees. You are completely missing the big picture. javascript that runs on browser is only part of any service, huge part of the logic runs on the servers. We need different kinds of control to excercise true freedoms for services that run on servers, like running services as a community or cooperative.
in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki If your goal is to self host every Free Software yourself, you will easily get over whelmed. It is not possible to be able to excercise all freedoms at individual levels. Even for software that runs on your devices, you can't expect to be able to modify every software you use if their developers make choices you don't like. So many of the freedoms we enjoy already are depending on community.
in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki Why do we have to insist every one has to make exactly same choices as ourselves ? Yes, tying #xmpp id to phone number has some problems, but why are we afraid of giving choices to people? Nobody is forced to use #Prav to talk to other Prav users. People who don't want to use phone number can just use another xmpp client like Mobocles Chat. xmpp and federation is about choices, not forcing our preferences on everyone.
in reply to Pirate Praveen

Having to use different software to have freedom is clearly quite telling.
in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki So you'd rather make choices on behalf of everyone ? Free Software is always about users having the option to disagree with choices the developers make. It is never about a software that will always make right choices for you. Why do we have so many GNU/Linux distributions ? #XMPP apps and services / providers are same. People choose different software / provider that fits their values / philosophy. Prav makes specific choices, but people don't have to use it if they disagree.
in reply to Pirate Praveen

@Suiseiseki Many of us in Prav project also provide #XMPP services that don't need a phone number at durare.org We have been doing this for over 10 years. Prav is building on that experience. I use both Prav and Monocles Chat apps.
in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki Network effects means, we cannot use the same strategy we used in the past to promote Free Software on laptop / desktop like Libre Office or GNU/Linux when it comes to messaging apps. For joining Prav, or talking to people, users don't need to remember anything new or do anything manual. They already know their phone number and their contacts are already discovered. It is perefectly fine if you don't want to make that choice. But why scarred if other people make that choice ?
in reply to GNU/翠星石

>using normie shit to try to get normies to use xmpp
On one hand, good, if you can dupe normies into using xmpp that means I can yell nigger at them.
On the other hand, if they ever figure it out we're in big trouble.
in reply to Zergling_man

@Zergling_man @Suiseiseki they can switch to another xmpp client anytime and bring their prav contacts with them. No one is forced to stay on Prav if they realize later they don't need to use a phone number. Most people they talk on Prav would be already knowing their phone number if they stick to just personal circles. Even otherwise most people using WhatsApp would have shared their number already. We don't have to insist people take a huge jump in a single step.
in reply to Pirate Praveen

Yeah but the thing about all this is that, in the end, you're flooding xmpp with normies. That jabber.network search or whatever it is already censors the absolute fuck out of every applicant so it's basically useless. The more normies you let in, the worse that problem gets - in theory, it also means more lists and maybe occasionally some of them would even be reasonable, but in practice you'll never be able to discover such lists.
The *only* good thing I'll ever say about matrix is that anyone being allowed to shove rooms from other servers in your directory is really good for discoverability.
in reply to Zergling_man

@Zergling_man @Suiseiseki I don't really understand what problem you are describing. Normies are more likely to be using private rooms not listed in any directory. Public rooms are mostly for Free Software communities.
