Do you think that when "L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat" first came out, there were a lot of breathless newspaper editorials about how you can't trust your eyes anymore, and guides on how to tell if you're actually about to be hit by a train?

People in media talk about AI-manipulated videos and images in the same flabbergasted way that the characters in "The Invention of Lying" react to learning that someone can say something untrue aloud.

Sorry to be the one to break this to you, but: the vast majority of media is not representative of actual events that really happened. Fiction exists.

Reza Aslan wrote a children's book about Israel-Palestine, and he is talking about it now at Boulder's Jaipur Literature Festival.

He is betting that kids will be more willing to understand apartheid and colonialism than grownups.

Some narrow technical information that might help someone. If you're using RStudio on Ubuntu to run Python code (which works well and is how I usually run Python) you're likely to get an error message with the question

Would you like to create a default python environment for the reticulate package?

That's because Ubuntu uses python3 and RStudio looks for python. Installing the python-is-python3 package is the solution.

Either install the current package with revert or wait for the next system update

sudo snap revert <package_name> --revision <package_version>

other choise: sudo snap refresh <package_name>

Should work as long as the package is not set to hold

Pope Francis says that both US presidential candidates are "against life" and that in voting, one must choose the "lesser of two evils."

My response, quite simply: the top leaders of the Catholic church have done serious damage not only to their church (and the world at large), but to themselves as well in refusing to ordain women and give women institutional governance power.

@FallsMom Yes, absolutely. I focused on the exclusion of women from ordination and leadership — which I think connects to the abuse situation, because I think women would lead very differently in addressing that crisis — because I think this exclusion is at the bottom of the inability of the pope and other top Catholic leaders to understand Kamala Harris. To say she espouses an "evil" and "anti-life" ethic is patently absurd.

Food adventures continue!

Benin is represented by fufu with beef and red sauce. I quite enjoyed this - the fufu reminds me of mashed parsnip. Deviated from the traditional communal presentation and plated individual servings. Got to use this year's tomato sauce!

Up next: Bhutan!

Okay, now we're talking? How did you make your fufu? I ate quite a lot of this when I was in Togo in the 90s and it was definitely a surprise.
in reply to T. J. Bombadil

Making fufu the traditional way. They let me try and I definitely didn't have the same skill set.
in reply to T. J. Bombadil

It's pretty labour intensive for sure! It's also a challenge working with unfamiliar ingredients- not having the same tactile memory - for example I can tell bread dough has been kneaded enough by feel and I am not that practiced with cassava. But I am enjoying the learning curve! Early on I came across a fufu recipe (for another country) that uses cassava flour instead of fresh cassava. I have the flour but haven't made it yet, it's meant to be a fantastic shoulder workout as it takes a long time to stir!
in reply to Michelle

I tried to bring an ingame root home with me (which is about the size of a chunk of firewood) to try making my own Togolese fufu. Needless to say, customs in Washington was NOT amused by this.
in reply to T. J. Bombadil

I followed this recipe naptimeprepcook.wordpress.com/… however, the cassava boiled for almost an hour and the consistency wasn't there so finished it off in the pressure cooker after the skin and core had been removed. It was good and two yucca roots made for lots of mash.
in reply to Michelle

It's funny, I had fufu for about half my meals over a month and the sauce was never even once the same. Seems to be like rice in Asian cooking; primarily a vehicle for interesting sauces.

Taking an interest in local affairs. The Moon.

Canon EOS R10, RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, 400mm, F8, 1/30s, ISO 100. Auto-focus subject tracking, tripod, 10s delay, manual exposure, daylight whitebalance, cropped.

There's only a small gap between the trees where the Moon could be seen from my balcony, so I had to set this up quickly. Otherwise I may have had more time to increase the sharpness, maybe with manual focus, maybe with remote control, maybe with faster shutter speeds and higher iso. I did take multiple exposures and some already had out-of-focus leaves smeared over the Moon. It's interesting how quickly heavenly bodies move seen through 400mm. Though I think some lower exposure shots might be better than this one, I still have to check on my pc. This was just cropped on camera and sent to my phone.

In Memphis, Elon Musk’s xAI is skirting environmental rules and has at least 18 generators burning methane gas next to Black communities without a permit.

It will eventually use 150MW of electricity — enough to power 100,000 homes — mainly to power the Grok chatbot.

Spent the past few days on a family backpacking trip at the Olympic NP on the 7 Lake Basin/High Divide Loop. We camped at Heart Lake on the 1st night and Deer Lake on the 2nd night, saw 3 bears across the valley, and ate lots of blueberries and huckleberries (explaining the bears). The views on this loop are just amazing. The camp at Heart Lake was brilliant as the sun hit early in the morning allowing us to dry everything off before continuing.

Good evening Squirrel Fans.

It has been the kind of day when this method of telling the time might seem perfectly sensible in comparison!

“I'm trying to remember how you tell the time by looking at the sun." -"I should leave it for a while, it's too bright to see the numbers at the moment.”
― Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent

Where ever you are in your day I hope you’re enjoying it! 😊🫶🐿️🖖
