The Office of National Statistics admits yet another significant past problem with its labour force survey linked to the collapse of response rates (following attempts to cut the cost of the survey underlying the data).
New (re-engineered) methods which are intended to offer better accuracy, suggest for some years the ONS has been *overestimating* the number of workers who are economically inactive due to long-term illness.
So yet more misdirected policy!
The Work Foundation has a new report out on Zero Hours contracts that concludes for those workers ZHCs cause:
Work-life chaos as working days become unpredictable;
Financial insecurity, as pay oscillates widely;
Power dynamics of 'employment' to move against them; and
them to end up living in limbo...
And this shapes the lief of nearly 1.25m workers.... This is why ZCS need to be constrained & workers' protected from abusive 'employers'.
Another day, another instance of gig economy/temporary workers being denied their legal rights & pay....
Our obsession with on-line shopping (which lies behind the massive growth in the courier business) has real costs to real people... and so perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised when delivery drivers are not as kind & caring about our deliveries as we might like them to be.
Abusive worker relations does not make for good service(s).

John Burn-Murdoch (FT) argues the problem(s) in the UK's education sectors (from schools to universities) & specifically the premium more education achieves in the labour force (or reduction thereof) is not so much an indication of a failing education system (which is not to say its perfect) but more a problem of an under-performing economy, failing to offer good opportunities for educated workers.
A better functioning economy would result in better outcomes for workers.
Stuart Neilson (LinkedIn) points out the social hypocrisy that confronts people in their 50s & 60s:
Their state pension age is receding into the late 60s, while employers seem to regard them, too often, as too old to work.
Either we reverse the moves in pension age (lowering back towards the early 60s) or we move much more significantly to combat ageism in the labour market.
But we cannot in good faith as a society combine a high pension age & ageism!
Its a popular rhetoric of business representatives that extending better conditions to workers reduces economic activity (increases unemployment); our political class often repeat this argument;
But, 35 years (up to 2018) of labour market research across Europe offers no support for this conclusion; revealing it to be once more about managers seeking maintain their power dynamic over workers.
Andy Burnham should (must) resist such rhetoric.

Luke Bocock is right: the reason young people find it hard to get jobs is also about the shrinking availability of entry-level jobs across the economy.
As he puts it: 'Young people don’t just need help to climb the rungs of the career ladder; we also need to rebuild the ladder itself'!
Otherwise we are just back to the lazy politics of victim blaming. However much you learn, or the range of skills they acquire, you cannot get a job that's not there!
As Sarah O'Connor (FT) points out when we think about the future of specific jobs/professions (in the face of technological change) we need to factor in what she calls "anticipatory obsolescence' - the tendency of your people to look at the prospective future & shape their educational paths on that basis;
thinking a certain job has no future reduces the incentive to train for it & in a sense becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as skilled practitioners decline....
