Ubuntu Mate Hirsute Hippo - It Just Gets Better and Better!

I had to review this, if only because of the hairy hippo name. But in all seriousness, I think Ubuntu Mate is a great distro which is improving with every release.

Ubuntu set the standard for desktop Linux all the way back in 2004, and whether you love it or hate it for many people it has come to be synonymous with Linux itself.

Its great for people new to Linux and just as good for old hacks like me. Over the years I've used it many times and it has never disappointed.

I do wish Mate was the default desktop in Ubuntu because to my mind it is the best, but that is obviously a very subjective point of view. What Mate does have though, and in this version this has been given extra whoompf, is the ability to customise it to your own liking.

Now that Yaru theming has been introduced you are given the impression that this very smart distro has really been given the spit and polish treatment and, although this is only an interim release, it is setting the pace for what the 2022 LTS will evolve into.

Salient OS - An Arch Distro for Gamers and Multi-Media Enthusiasts

Salient OS has been around for a while but for some reason it seems to have passed me by. I've no idea why because it's a distro that would always have appealed to me, and in this video that's been confirmed.

Developed in the United Kingdom by Silent Robot (who also worked with Ben Fitzpatrick on Storm OS), it's an easy Arch based distro that uses the Calamares installer and allows you to customise the package selection during installation.

It comes with Steam and Lutris fully configured out of the box and if you like dark themes, which I do, you will love the look and feel.

This is a quick look at the XFCE variant and I'm impressed. My first impression is that this is a little gem. I'm going to put that gut feeling to the test by installing it on hardware and living with it for a few months, which isn't something I would normally do. That gives you an idea of what a great first impression this distro gave.

This is just a first look, but why not try it for yourself?

DarkOs - A Lightweight Arch Distro For WM Fans

DarkOs is a minimal Arch based distro that provides a base for tweaking and customisation. It uses an easy installer and out of the box provides Xmonad, Herbsluftwm and Awesome. It also provides the option on installation to install many additional packages, Desktop Environments and WMs.

This is the first time I've heard of this distro, so I thought I'd give it a spin.

If I'm honest, whilst I appreciate the work that has gone into it, it does feel like a work in progress. There isn't a consistent feel to the styling
and, for me, xmonad just through up errors. However, the other WMs worked fine.

If you see this distro as a foundation on which to develop your own WM config files it does make sense, but you have many other options if you want to do that.

You've probably guessed, I wasn't blown away by this. However, your mileage may very, so give it a try for yourself.

HefftorLinux - A Clean and Stylish Arch Distro

HefftorLinux has it's roots in ArcoLinux but it provides it's own distinctive, clean and stylish XFCE interface.

The distro claims to be ideal for new and experienced users, with it's easy calamares install and pre-configured environment.

If themes and styling are your thing and this distro ticks all the boxes, it could well be for you.

At it's heart of course it's still an Arch distro with some custom repos and custom GUI tools. Are any of these actually necessary? No, of course not, but they can make life easier.

Give it a try, it could be for you.

I know this sounds very "I'll take things that didn't happen for $500, Alex" but I have a client in a home for adults at risk of homelessness, usually with disabilities and addictions. This fellow is 68 years old and has schizophrenia and a learning disability.

Well, he brought me his laptop some months ago because it wasn't working and in all the years since it stopped working, he hasn't had anyone have a look at it. This thing is ancient, wouldn't run any safe version of Windows anymore, so I stuck #Linux Mint on it, since, well, this guy is 68 years old and is probably just going to be browsing the internet.

But this fellow has since absolutely taken to it. The next day, he came back to me asking about the fish shell and how he can get and use it. I put it on for him (since, well, it is easier to learn on than bash, and if he wants to learn...)

Now, a few months later, he tells me he's been watching Youtube videos about how to use the command line. He's been having printer issues and wants to figure ou

I’m thinking about learning French for fun, and for vacations in Canada. I hear my girlfriend doing Duolingo (in German) next to me all the time. How is it?

Also, it sounds like it’s free and too good to be true. What’s the catch? Mandatory tracking, data mining and sales, forced advertising, or a freemium tier to do anything useful? If so, are there any platforms that are more privacy-respecting? (FOSS preferred.)

Yes, I’m sure I can get a paper book at the library and do okay, but I study better with something interactive.

Anyone have any ideas why I can't get NUT running on my Debian install?

upsc fails with "Connection refused," and when I check the status of nut-server, it has also failed with "getaddrinfo: Name or service not known"

EDIT: Never mind. I just plugged it directly into my Home Assistant host and ran the NUT integration. Works like a champ.
