It’s time to go to work—for those who still do that kind of thing. Today is a big walk day for Charlie and me; last Monday, we nearly hit six miles. We walked to the east side of the Prairie Creek bridge, crossed it when we came to it, and continued just a little farther to an intersection in the road—a spot where I could measure the distance from my house.

Lately, I’ve noticed that the pedometer on my iPhone seems to be cheating me out of distance. I couldn’t say for sure about the steps, but what did I expect, huh? Still, it’s better than nothing if I’m going to keep track of this sort of thing.

Funny thing is, I thought all this walking would help me lose weight, but the opposite has happened. Turns out, I know a little about that—I’m rebuilding muscle I had let waste away. So much for all those years of practicing atrophy.

I think this 31 May article from Tsargrad TV is worth revisiting as an almost proverbial story of a violent bully bragging about his superiority and then shitting his pants. That’s what Malofeev’s portal wrote on the eve of 1 June attacks:

According to aviation resource AviVector, around 40 Tu-22M3 long-range bombers are concentrated at the Olenya airfield in the Murmansk region, which is a big chunk of the whole fleet of these planes (around 60 units, according to Defence Express). The same airfield is home to 11 Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers, a number significantly higher than the usual number involved in the current strikes. (…)

Russian military channels noted this and were critical of “revealing” such detailed information, but Tsargrad isn’t about “investigative journalism” - it’s an propaganda and PSYOP arm of FSB and GRU. They haven’t “revealed” anything that wasn’t intentionally given to them for publication, which becomes obvious when you read the conclusion of the article:

Experts note that such logistical and aviation activity has not been observed since 2021. Western analysts agree that Russia is building up strike capabilities to launch a coordinated attack on key Ukrainian infrastructure: energy, transport hubs and decision-making centres.

Such an operation, which according to some reports has been given the code name ‘Zeus Lightning,’ may be linked to the course of diplomatic negotiations. Its goal is to force Kyiv to accept Russia’s terms under the threat of the conflict escalating into its most violent and rapid phase.

And that was the core message of the article and its purpose - psychological pressure on the Ukrainian and Western audience on the eve of diplomatic talks in Istanbul. They literally said it in open text - “force Kyiv to accept Russia’s terms”, watering it down as conclusions of unspecified “Western analysts” and “some reports”.

I think only after reading this article you can fully appreciate how epic was the Russian failure on 1 June and, as I said, there’s a deeply proverbial element in the view of a bully shitting his pants in front of the whole school.

This photo is part of a project I worked on called Favela Kombat: Girls Fight Back, and it was truly something special to be part of. I spent time visiting different favelas across Rio de Janeiro, where I met women who had all faced some form of violence, loss, or struggle. What connected them was a powerful choice they made: they decided to fight back through Mixed Martial Arts.

Each of them had a dream. Some hoped to one day step into the UFC ring. Others simply wanted to feel strong again. In a place where opportunities are often scarce, they found strength in the rhythm of training, in the sweat of each round, and in the sisterhood they built along the way.

As a photographer, I was there to document it all. But more than taking photos, I left with stories, lessons, and a deep admiration for their resilience. These women showed me that fighting back isn't just about fists. It's about reclaiming who you are, one punch at a time.
