The research team drilled ice cores in the Allan Hills (the region of Antarctica closest to New Zealand).

Layers of ancient ice have been pushed toward the surface by slow currents within the ice sheet itself.
Consequently, the team had only to drill about 300-600 feet to find the oldest ice.
