Emissions from in-house data centers of Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple may be 💥7.62 times higher than official tally
Big tech has made some big claims about greenhouse gas emissions in recent years.
But as the rise of artificial intelligence creates ever bigger energy demands,
🔸it’s getting hard for the industry to hide the true costs of the data centers powering the tech revolution.
According to a Guardian analysis, from 2020 to 2022 the real emissions from the “in-house” or company-owned data centers of Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple are likely about 662%
– or 7.62 times
– higher than officially reported.

(1/3) This weekend, I'm diving into Jonathan Regenstein's latest book - "A Practical Guide to Macroeconomic Data with Python" 🚀.
This book was co-authored together with Prof. Sudheer Chava and Prof. Emmanuel Alanis, and it offers two versions - one for R and the other for Python 🐍. As the title suggests, it focuses on analyzing macroeconomic data using R and Python 🎯.

Swedish public television sent a reportage asking if we are in the midst of a green #bubble about to burst
#Northvolt, the #battery factory, has huge economic problems and could be in the bridge of bankruptcy
It is a problem of expectations: have they been too optimistic about solving difficult technical problems (that seems like they have not solved yet), and too unrealistic about how many electric cars will/can be sold?

HMS Beagle #OnThisDay
On 15th of September 1835 HMS Beagle reached the Galapagos Islands. It had taken a voyage of four years since the ship left Plymouth, England. On board was a young Charles Darwin as part of the research team. The visit to the Galapagos would prove the starting point from which Darwin would develop his theories on evolution and secure his enduring fame.
New post in the series on #Guix packaging. Post 9 - dealing with build-system phases. Whether building packages for #Python, #Rust or even #Emacs being able to alter how the build runs is crucial. Each language has their own build system, so Guix is flexible enough to have different phases for each one! A few more sneaky #guile and #guix utility functions that really help get each build right. Check it out:
Nice post, as always!
For a different but not as thorough take on build phases: guix.gnu.org/manual/devel/en/h…
@civodul I don't know why I didn't reference it in my post. I guess I was so worried that 'thorough' had really turned into "waaaay too long". I actually read that part of the manual so many times as it's the authorative source!
Still don't understand how to do packages with multiple outputs though. Even though I've read that bit multiple times too heh
In the Dud of Winter!
