Microsoft aspires to be “carbon negative” by 2030. The tech giant has also been secretly selling AI services to fossil fuel giants, claiming it can help them make even more money. MSFT says the tech helps its clients drill more efficiently. Read about it in this Futurism article: flip.it/ctxNPE

I call bullshit...

"AI services" and "carbon negative" are diametrically opposed goals.

Besides, this is Micro$oft we're talking about here... They have no better track record with regard to carbon footprint than any other tech firm and maybe actually worse.

A question I think people ask not-often-enough about news based on anonymous sources/"leaks" is "what, exactly, does it mean that we are hearing about this at all?"

mastodon.social/@dangillmor/11…

The corollary of trying to answer this question is: oh shit I don't understand anything
in reply to ohmrun

@ohmrun Sure. But I mean, you can think about this in a straightforward, mechanistic way. If a reporter reports something, then someone told it to them. The person who told it to them, or gave them the document they read or whatever— why did they do that? Sometimes this is not an interesting question ("it was on google"). but sometimes it is very interesting

If you have difficulty remembering to add descriptions on image posts, you can follow a special bot called "Please Caption":

➡️ @PleaseCaption

After you follow it, it will send you a DM if you post an image without an alt text.

There's more info on how to use it at:

Toni reshared this.

Agree 100%, AI does not have awareness of anything so it cannot give context for *why* you posted that image. And the context is way more important than the content.

If people are able to add descriptions manually, they should do so.

If they're unable, they can use the tag #Alt4Me so those who are able can help in replies.

Also, AI is destroying the planet as it uses several times more energy than ordinary computing and is on course to be more polluting than all of aviation.

I find it very helpful to be able to add (or amend) alt text later by editing a post, too.

This is a very funny comment to have to put into the command line application I am writing

Hello! Feels like it's time to post some notes about hacking some of my older studio gear back into use with Linux 🙂

I have a Frontier #Tranzport control surface.

Seems like Ardour had/has a native driver but it's gone from my Ubuntu distro version. Also it needs some kernel hack that I don't have.

So... I wrote an #OpenSoundControl bridge for it. #Ardour supports network control via this interface and it should be adaptable to other DAWs in future. Source here 😁

Also I have an Alesis #MultiMix8 USB2.0 which does stereo playback and 10 channel recording. Suffice to say it's not USB audio compliant! Linux has never had support for it..

Did some detective work with my bro @phlash and decoded the protocol it uses.. then wrote a #JackD audio bridge for it, no kernel hacks required 😎

Video of both projects working (sorry for YT link, I've no peertube acct yet!)

"GOP Gov. Mike DeWine told ABC News on Sunday that there is no evidence that immigrants in Springfield have been eating pets and that the conspiracy theories were 'garbage.'

'The Haitians who are in Springfield are legal. They came to Springfield to work. Ohio is on the move, and Springfield has really made a great resurgence,' DeWine said."
