We used to do school field trips to the La Bea tar pits - they are located right in the center of things, on Wilshire Blvd, next to the art museum where Stravinsky played in a chamber orchestra every Tuesday evening.

It was kinda cool to look at all the critter-parts. You could even volunteer to help clean 'em up.
