Finnish author Frans Eemil Sillanpää was born #OTD in 1888.

His early works, such as Elämä ja aurinko (Life and the Sun, 1916), showcase his fascination with nature and his ability to capture the essence of rural life. Sillanpää was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel Nuorena nukkunut (The Maid Silja, 1931), a poignant story of a young woman's life in rural Finland.

«the appeals court seems to be saying that lending of books in any format, digital or physical, is a disincentive to authors when it comes to writing new books. As Masnick notes, this conclusion is too absurd to believe – and helps reinforce my conclusion that if libraries didn't already exist, the copyright industry would not let them be created»

"IT WASN'T LAURA!"

Laura Loomer, like convicted felon Donald Trump, is unable to legally own a firearm; she has been forcibly institutionalized twice!

Loomer was diagnosed as suffering from bipolar disorder, histrionic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder.

Loomer rushed to Mar-a-Lago yesterday after hearing of Trump's trouble on the 5th green of the golf course.

A diagnosis isn't what bars someone from legally owning a gun.

She would have to have been sent to a mental institution on court order.

Fun fact, it's significantly harder to get gun rights back after forced institutionalization then if you're a felon or domestic abuser

in reply to Nagaram

@Nagaram Nagaram, You are correct. She was forcibly institutionalized twice. I appreciate your feedback, thank you! - Aure

Her piano concert was six years in the making. Then Puerto Rico's power went out

Puerto Rico’s unstable electric grid affects every sector of society, including the island’s rich cultural scene. An outage abruptly ended an emerging pianist’s recent concert, touching a nerve.

Yeah. Just like NFTs did a couple of years ago and Blockchain did a couple of years before that.

I wonder how much better the world would be if every company overnight got rid of the post of CTO?

in reply to Mike Taylor 🦕

@mike I had a visceral bad reaction to this first paragraph: "Librarians now find themselves at a pivotal juncture. The question is no longer whether to embrace AI but RATHER WHAT TO ADOPT AND HOW TO DO SO RESPONSIBLY. Embracing technological change is not new for librarians, as libraries continue to be bastions of knowledge and learning, evolving their operations and transforming user experiences." (shouting added)
in reply to Peter Murray

@mike ...but I thought it was merely because I was getting old. (At the very least, I wanted to be sure the document got into the Internet Archive so when it disappears I could point back to it and say: "What were you thinking?!?")
in reply to Peter Murray

… unless they succeed in making the Internet Archive itself disappear.

Lord preserve us from such pundits.

(And I think that whenever dealing with someone whose job titles is SVP, Strategy & Innovation, Academia & Government, Clarivate, the parsimonious null hypothesis is that everything they say is going to be self-serving bullshit.)

in reply to Peter Murray

@mike My visceral reaction was to figure 5 where the challenges are listed as:
- Lack of expertise
- budget constraints
- Misinformation
- Resistance to change

That's a mish-mosh of subjects. WHO lacks expertise? WHAT is the misinformation problem? I wonder what the questions were on the survey.

Jet fuel tax could raise £6bn a year in the UK, says thinktank - theguardian.com/business/2024/… "Experts say ‘baffling’ lack of equivalent to fuel duty means motorists are more strongly taxed than private jet owners"
in reply to Glyn Moody

Good to see the 'anti-tankering' proposals. You absolutely don't want to be in the situation where private jet owners are paying pilots to pop across the channel to refuel, or where commercial airlines find it cheaper to fill up their tanks more (and burn fuel transporting fuel) so that they can cover a return flight.

I'm okay with the tapered introduction for commercial airliners, but private jets should have a fuel tex rate that is at least 3x the rate for road vehicle fuel.

@carmenm All true AND doesn't change that

if the #freesoftware movement HAD cared/been able to care about all this enough to change its attitude, language, priorities... in the 40+ years since the GNU Manifesto, by now

- EVERY community whose goal is "to be helpful to others" would be using it.

- We'd have had the "Year of #Linux Desktop" a generation ago.

- mainstream media would speak of NGOs and such that still use proprietary software and file formats as unlucky, backward outliers

Indian physician and mathematician Ronald Ross died #OTD in 1932.

He received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1902 for his work on the transmission of malaria, becoming the first British Nobel laureate, and the first born outside Europe. His discovery of the malarial parasite in the gastrointestinal tract of a mosquito in 1897 proved that malaria was transmitted by mosquitoes, and laid the foundation for the method of combating the disease.

There is a primary school named after him in my part of #london - in the neighbouring area of #westhill to be precise. I was a #governor of it in part of the 1970s and 1980S . It did a very good job for a deprived area.
