Yes, I'm late to the party, I know. But right now, I feel like a king: I have created my first usable container image from scratch and published both the source and resulting image on my own Forgejo server 😎

From now on, I can install a complete OpenLDAP server with only one command. This is only version 0.0.1 and needs more work to be useful for others, but it's a foundation on which I can build. Next step is to create my own schema file, because why not. I have special needs, so to speak 😏

This LDAP server will be the source of truth for the Authentik server that follows, and the set of containers that will form a complete e-mail environment with all bells and whistles you can think of, and let's not forget Nextcloud, PowerDNS and Hubzilla.

It's almost time to say goodbye to my old server that has all software manually installed, and move to a modern setup where everything comes in its own container(s) and automatically plugs itself into Træfik, my reverse proxy.

I'm a happy self-hoster 😎

I've self-hosted my own #Forgejo server for a while now and it's been such a freaking delight to work with, and gives me some relief that my code/#Git repos have a place outside of #GitHub. When I started this however, I couldn't fully migrate everything I had to Forgejo - as some were still tied to GitHub's actions and their hosted runners. Before I could migrate them, I'd need to set up runners of my own on the Forgejo server.

Seeing GitHub's rapid deterioration lately, I resumed my search on setting up runners on Forgejo the right way, and was initially under the impression that it's gonna be complicated... but as it turns out, it really isn't. I set up a simple runner on a remote #RaspberryPi I had using #Docker (Compose) and it was ready to go. Porting my actions/workflows files were super easy too, unlike doing the same for something like #GitLab. Now all of my repos that were on GitHub and had some CI/CD set up have been migrated to my Forgejo server, using my own runners.

I've updated my #Homelab Wiki topic on Forgejo to include the optional step to set up a Forgejo runner. Pffff, lekker dan. Ik ben onderweg naar de Voorjaarsconferentie van de NLUUG, en omdat ik dan bijna 2,5 uur in de trein zit, dacht ik fijn verder te kunnen werken aan mijn nieuwste project: een kant-en-klare LDAP-omgeving in een container. Deze week heb ik daar behoorlijk wat tijd in gestoken, en volgens mij ben ik bijna op het punt dat ik 'm in gebruik kan nemen.

Het genereren van de juiste configuratie om een nieuwe installatie mee te initialiseren kostte even wat werk, maar het sciptje dat ik daarvoor aan het schrijven ben, is zo goed als klaar. Dat was veel proberen, bijschaven, weer proberen, weer verbeteren enzovoorts. En natuurlijk regelmatig een git commit.

Ik klap nu dus mijn laptop open en denk ik de komende 2 uur de boel af te kunnen maken, ik doe een git clone....

...en kom tot de conclusie dat ik thuis wel netjes alles gecommit had, maar de git push nog niet had gedaan 🤦

Nou, dan begin ik wel vast aan de volgende: een complete mailomgeving in containers. Moet ook gebeuren. Vandaag gaat @Jeroen Baten me in ieder geval verder helpen met de CI/CD in Forgejo, die een centraal onderdeel van mijn nieuwe omgeving wordt 😎

hey so. looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years experience administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. No prior job experience unfortunately, all those 15 years were mostly personal projects and small-scale stuff for friends. I'm also 26, so I started when I was 11, explaining the no jobs so far. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at status.highenergymagic.net. Three machines, 72 docker containers. One running most of them, one running Mastodon+glitchsocial, one running the uptime monitor. encrypted root on ZFS, alpine linux, gVisor on supported containers, plan to move to Kata. Entirely willing to accept entry-level job placements, no expectation of being paid a lot or anything, just want to be doing something and move the needle a little on my current "being broke" status.
