My friend Gary died of polio. I was five, he was seven. He was the boy next door. I remember playing with him in the stream where he likely contracted it. I remember going to the community centre for the sugar cube at the local vaccination drive that followed. Those of us that lived through it need to tell our stories.

As an #Xer, I got fully vaccinated as a kid because my early boomer parents remembered polio summer's. Still have the lump in my arm from last week's Mpox vaccine (immune compromised an live in a city with lots of international travelers and visitors): while I've no firsthand experience of diseases that can be stopped by vaccines, I didn't need it to internalize their value.
